  • This paper presents apparent thermal conductivity of various powder at different vacuum levels for cryogenic insulation. Four kinds of powder insulator are examined by using boil-off calorimetry at pressure range from 50 Torr to 3 mTorr. The first material is perlite which is widely used in cryogenic application. Microsphere is the second one that is recently proposed as a replacement powder for liquid hydrogen storage tanks. It is a hollow sphere made of silica with the diameter in the order of 10 to $100{\mu}m$. Popped rice and polystyrene beads are also selected as candidates for powder insulation even though they are polymers. With their porous elliptic and spherical configuration and light density, they demonstrate fairly good thermal insulation performance at pressure range from 50 Torr to 3 mTorr. According to the experimental investigation in this paper, microsphere and polystyrene beads possess promising insulation characteristic as powder insulators and further study is desired.

  • Powder metallurgy processes are able to form Net-Shape products and have been widely used in the production of automobile parts to improve its productivity. However, because of pores in powder products, the toughness of powder products are generally poor. Therefore, forged products are used in parts which suffer severe fatigue loads. In this paper, the choice of powder materials and production processes such as mixing, compaction, sintering, heat treatment to produce automobile spline hub are studied. Three type of materials are selected and processed and its microstructure and properties are investigated by tensile test, compression ring test, and impact test. Materials and processing methods are selected from the results. Finally, experimental spline hubs are manufactured by selected processes from selected powders and proved by torsional durability test.

  • A new method has been developed to fabricate microcomponents by a combination of photolithography and sintering of metallic powder mixtures, without the need for compression and the addition of Mg. This involves (1) the fabrication of a micromould, (2) mould filling of the powder/binder mixture, (3) debinding and (3) sintering. The starting powdered materials consisted of a mixture of aluminium powder(average size of 2.5 um) and alloying elemental powder of Cu and Sn(less than 70nm), at appropriate proportions to achieve nominal compositions of Al-6wt%Cu, Al-6wt%Cu-3wt%Sn. This paper presents detailed investigation of debinding behaviour and microstructural development.

  • In the viewpoint of engineering, materials problem is a key problem, which determines whether the exploitation of fusion energy will be success. The most important class of fusion materials is plasma-facing materials (PFM). W, as high Z high melting-point metal is one of the most important candidate materials due to its high plasma erosion resistance. Improving the ductility of W and W based alloy, lowering its ductile-brittleness transition temperature for meeting the requirements of fusion application is an important task. In this paper, severalpowder meatllurgy methods of fabricating W and W based materials are being investigated.

  • The powder propellant rocket which uses micron-sized particles as fuel is storable and costly. Functions like thrust control and multiple-ignition can be realized by changing powder mass flow rate. In this paper, we discuss the theoretical performance of bi-propellant and mono-propellant powder rocket. When used as the fluidization gas, helium can improve specific impulse dramatically. The stability of the powder feeding device is preliminarily quantified through metal/N2O powder rocket hot fire tests.

  • Powder forging is used for heavy-loaded parts (rings of rolling-contact bearings, gears etc.) production. Rolling contact fatigue is material property values of which characterize possibility of practical utilization of such parts. Rolling contact fatigue of some steels obtained out of prealloyed powders Astaloy CrM, Atomet 4601, Atomet 4901 and powder blends iron-carbon-nickel by hot forging is studied in the present paper. Effect of various kinds of heat and thermomechanical treatment on rolling contact fatigue is determined. Thermomechanical treatment provides optimal values of rolling contact fatigue. In this case steel structure contains up to 40% of retained metastable austenite which is transformed to martensite on trials. Thus typically crack is generated on residual pores and non-metallic inclusions instead of martensite zones in wrought steels.

  • This paper described the preparation method for composing high-grade synthetic diamond by water atomizing using FeNi30 powder catalyst. The objective of this article is about powder making process using super high water atomizing in the atmosphere of inert gas, and then corroded the powder with a corrosion inhibitor. Finally, FeNi30 catalyst powder with lower oxygen content and good sphericity is produced. The experiment of making diamonds by using cubic press and the performance of the diamonds are also discussed.

  • The mechanical properties of ferrous powder metallurgy (P/M) materials are directly related to their microstructure. Ferrous P/M materials with sufficient hardenability will develop microstructures containing significant percentages of martensite in the as-sintered condition. Recently, sinter-hardening has developed into a highly cost effective production method through hardened P/M parts without the need for additional heat-treatments. This paper reviews the advances of sinter-hardening as well as some key processing parameters such as sintering temperature, cooling rate, tempering required to produce high quality sinter-hardened components. Specific topics including effect of alloying elements, alloying methods, and the Characterization and observation of microstructure are discussed.

  • A powder spreading phenomenon is one of disadvantageous characteristics of the powder bed fusion process using electron beams. The powder spreading phenomenon can be controlled using a pre-heating process of metallic powders. The aim of this paper was to investigate the preheating process of Stellite21 powder using electron beams. Powder spreading experiments were performed to examine the influence of process parameters on the spreading behaviors of Stellite21 powder. Powder heating experiments were carried to investigate the effects of the focusing current of the electron beam on the quality of the heated region. Using the results of the powder spreading and heating experiments, an appropriate combination of process parameters was obtained. The pre-heating experiment of Stellite21 was performed using the estimated combination of process parameters. The results of preheating experiments showed that the preheated Stelllite21 layer with desired characteristics can be created when the estimated combination of process parameters is applied.
