  • SMS Meer GmbH, formerly Mannesmann and today part of the SMS Group, has been building powder presses since the early 1950s. The patents developed here in this field have long since documented the pioneering work carried out for the PM industry. The paper focuses on the challenge of reconciling the contradictory demands in the production of highly complex and crack-free PM parts. The process employed with the patented Controlled Punch Adapter (CPA) [1] counters possible cracking reliably and directly at the source. In this way is it possible to develop new and highly complex parts to series production maturity in a minimum of time even without simulation of the press cycle [2]. The quality data achieved in the production series, almost 100% crack and micro crack-free green parts with optimum density distribution over all press levels is unrivalled and thus gives the user a clear lead over the competition.

  • The particle size distribution and shape are among the important parameters for characterisation of quality of metal powders. Specific material properties such as ability to flow, reactivity as well as compressibility and its hardening potentials hence the most important characteristics of sintered metals - are determined by the size distribution and shape. The correct particle size distribution and particle shape information are the key to best product quality in atomisation processes of aluminium, milling of pure metals and other processes. This paper presents state-of-the-art technology for characterization of particle size distribution and shape.

  • Organically bonded P/M mixes have been developed to improve the stability of dimensional properties by reducing the segregation of the mix constituents and improving the filling characteristics. Robustness and reliability are key factors for the promotion of P/M as cost effective substitute of competing manufacturing technologies. Based on the production of four different belt pulleys, this paper presents the achievement of reduced weight scatter and close dimensional control realizable by using a $Starmix^{TM}$ that is organically bonded.

  • The plastic deformation behaviors for powder extrusion of rapidly soildified Al-Si-Fe alloys at high temperature were investigated. During extrusion of Al-Si-Fe alloys, primary Si and intermetallic compound in matrix are broken finely. Additionally, during extrusion metastable $\delta$ phase($Al_4SiFe_2$) intermetallic compound disappears and the equilibrium $\beta$ phase($Al_5FeSi_2$) is formed. In gereral, it was diffcult to establish optimum process variables for extrusion condition through experimentation, because this was costly and time-consuming. In this paper, in order to overcome these problems, we compared the experimental results to the finite element analysis for extrusion behaviors of rapidly solidified Al-Si-Fe alloys. This ingormation is expected to assist in improving rapidly solidified Al-Si alloys extrusion operations.

  • In this paper, rheological characteristics of Metal Injection Moulding (MIM) feedstock using locally binder of palm stearin are presented. The feedstock consisted of 316L-grade stainless steel powder with three different particle sizes and the binders comprise palm stearin and polyethylene. The viscosity of MIM feedstock at different temperatures and shear rates was measured and evaluated. Results showed that, the feedstock containing palm stearin exhibited suitable rheological properties and suitable to produce a homogeneous feedstock that is favorable for injection molding process.

  • New manufacturing processes, such as thermochemical, mechanochemical and chemical vapor condensation processes have been developed to obtain nanostructured WC/Co materials. Nanoscale size WC/Co composite powders of near 100-150nm can be synthesizes by thermochemical and mechanochemical processes using water soluble precursors. Non-agglomerated and nano sized WC powder can be synthesized by the chemical vapor condensation process using metallorganic precursors as starting materials. In this paper, the scientific and technical issues on synthesis and consolidation of nanostructured WC/Co alloys produced by new chemical processes are introduced.

  • Porous titanium implants can be produced by powder metallurgy in combination with suitable space holder materials. Various mechanical experiments were done to characterize this material regarding the influence of the processing parameters on microstructure and mechanical properties taking into account the properties of the human bone. In this paper, the anistropic behaviour of uniaxially compacted samples was analysed in compression tests and compared to the behaviour of isostatically pressed samples. The failure of the struts of the porous titanium and the crack- initiation and -growth was examined by in-situ SEM analysis.
