Inorganic stiffening agents were prepared by mixing paper sludge incineration ash, blast furnace slag fine powder quicklime, anhydrous gypsum and fly ash. The main components of the solidifying agent developed for sludge treatment were SiO, $Al_2O_3$, $TiO_2$, $Fe_2O_3$, $Mn_2O_3$, CaO, MgO, $Na_2O$, $K_2O$, $P_2O$, and $SO_3$. Unlike cement, the developed solidifying agent did not contain $Cr^{6+}$, which is known as a carcinogen. Heavy metals and oil contaminated soil were mixed with solidifying agent and cured for 7 days and the heavy metal content was below the environmental standard. Sewage sludge cake, food waste and solidifying agent were mixed with each other, and after 7 days curing, soil component test showed that the heavy metal content was below the environmental standard. After mixing the sludge, solidifying agent and additive mixture into the beaker, the ammonia concentration was measured to be 0 after 3 days.

Chemical sludge conditioning is widely used to improve the dewatering efficiency. It is treated with commonly used conditioners, and then thickened and dewatered with a mechanical device. This paper aims to examine the flotation and thickening efficiencies of sewage sludge for conditioning conditions, such as unaerobic storage time, kinds of coagulant and dosages, and flotation conditions, such as sludge concentration and A/S ratio, using an dissolved air flotation apparatus. Experimental results showed that the specific surface area and specific resistance to filtration (SRF) were significantly increased and the flotation and thickening efficiencies were decreased with anaerobic storage time. However, the flotation and thickening efficiencies faintly decreased in sewage sludges conditioned as $Al_2(SO_4)_3$, $Fe_2(SO_4)_3$, and PSO-M. Flotation and thickening efficiencies in conditioned sewage sludge could be sustained up to 96% at A/S ratio of 0.01 mL/mg or over.
This paper is focused on an experimental study in order to investigate the utilization of sewage sludge ash as the cover and liner materials for the waste disposal landfill or as construction materials. A series of tests were performed to evaluate the basic properties, compaction, compressive strength, consolidation, permeability, and CBR of sewage ash. Specially, clay bricks were made as increasing replacement ratio of sewage ash (such as 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30%). And tests were fulfilled for its quality. Bentonite and lime were used as the additives to improve permeability properties of sewage sludge ash. As a result of tests, it was shown that the permeability coefficient decreases as increasing bentonite content and the percentage of bentonite was roughly needed 20% to keep the permeability coefficient below $1{\times}10^{-7}cm/sec$. The results of unconfined compression tests show that sewage ash meets the criteria of the unconfined compression strength for cover material. It was shown that the compressive strength decreases as increasing the replacement ratio of sewage sludge ash and the maximum replacement ratio of sewage sludge ash to satisfy the quality standards of the third degree bricks was about 15%.

There are two major issues for activated sludge process in sewage treatment plant. One is how to make sewage be more clean and the other is the energy saving in sewage treatment process. The major monitoring sewage qualities are chemical oxygen demand, phosphorus, nitrogen, suspended solid in effluent. These are transmitted to the national TMS(Telemetry Monitoring System) at every hour. If these exceed the environmental standard, the environmental charges imposed. So, these water qualities are to be controlled below the environmental standard in operation of sewage treatment plant. And recently, the energy saving is also important in process operation. Over 50% energy is consumed in blowers and motors for injection oxygen into aeration tank. So, with the water qualities to be controlled below the environmental standard, the energy saving also is to be accomplished for efficient plant management. Almost researches are aimed to control water quality without considering energy saving. AI techniques have been used for control water quality. AI modeling simulator provided the optimal control inputs(blower speed, waste sludge, return sludge) for control water quality. Blower speed is the main control input for activated sludge process. To make sewage be more clean, the excessive blower speed is supplied, but water quality is not better than the previous. In results, non necessary energy is consumed. In this paper we propose a new method that the energy saving also is to be accomplished with the water qualities to be controlled below the environmental standard for efficient plant management. Water qualities in only aeration tank are used the inputs of fuzzy models. Outputs of these models are chemical oxygen demand, phosphorus, nitrogen, suspended solid in effluent and have the environmental standards. In test, we found this method could save 10% energy than the previous methods.
Fiber mats were made at various density levels, using fibers from papermill sludge, ricestraw and various mixtures of the two. The paper mill sludges were collected from Moorim Papermill Co, and Jeonjoo Papermill Co. They were soaked in the liquid sulfur compounds, sulfur-tall oil and sulfurpolyester compounds, and made into fiber-reinforced, sulfur-based composition board. Under optimum conditions of fiber mat preparation and saturation with molten sulfur and modified sulfur, the Young's moduls of the manufactured tiber-reinforced composition board are superior to those of conventional wood-based composition boards. For example, the moduli of elasticity of the composition board made from papermill sludge, with a density of 0.40gm/$cm^3$, were greater than 1,400,000psi as compared 800,000psi for high density hardboard(1.28gm/$cm^3$). The modulus of rupture of the best reinforced composition board manufactured was over 9000psi, comparable to 6000psi of high density hardboard. The proposed Bryant and Lee's theory, "Modified Rule of Mixtures" can be applicable to the nonoriented and short fibrous composition board, when it was modified from "Rule of Mixtures" established by Paul an Jones, and supplemented by Smith and Cox's theory, In the Bryant and Lee's theory of $E_c=\frac{1}{3}aE_fV_f+bE_mV_m$, the constants "a" and "b" for the composition boards made from papermill sludge and the mixtures of ricestraw and the sludge were identified to be in the ranges of 3.29~3.54 and -2.47~-2.80 respectively.
As the increase of domestic sewage treatment plant and reinforcement of the standard of effluent water quality continues, the volumes of sewage sludge are consistently increasing. Existing treatment of sewage sludge, such as incineration and ocean dumping has been prohibited because of air pollution and prohibitions towards ocean dumping, and in turn, recycling and energy recovery from waste methods have being studied recently. However, the lack of technical level and systematic analyses of application technique are problems, that future analysis of such relative technique would be required. The present study has been investigated as follows, management technique of sludge, patent on refuse-derived fuel and increase biogas production and utilizable technology, trend of research paper. Furthermore, research development from five developed nations (Korea, Japan, China, United States, and United Kingdom), domestic and foreign have been investigated and analyzed by section. In this study, the future technical field which is required for effective management of sludge has been suggested.
Anaerobic digestion is generally used for the treatment of volatile organic solids such as manure and sludge from waste water treatment plants. However, the reaction rate of anaerobic process is slow, and thus it requires a large reactor volume. To minimize such a disadvantage, physical and chemical pre-treatment is generally considered. Another method to reduce the reactor size is to adopt different reactor system other than CSTR. In this paper, the effects of heat pre-treatment and reactor configurations on the anaerobic treatability of volatile solids was studied. Carrot, kale, primary sludge, and waste activated sludge was chosen as the test materials, and the BMP method was used to evaluate the maximum methane production and first order rate constants from each sample. After the heat treatment at $130^{\circ}C$ for 30min., the measured increase in SCOD per gram VS was up to 394 mg/L for the waste activated sludge. However, the methane production potential per gram VS was increased for only primary and waste activated sludge by 17-23%, remaining the same for carrot and kale. The overall methane production process for the tested solids can be described by first order reactions. The increased in reaction constant after heat pre-treatment was also more significant for the primary and waste activated sludge than that for carrot and kale. therefore, the heat pre-treatment appeared to be effective for the solids with high protein contents rather than for the solids with high carbohydrate contents. Among the four reactor systems studied, CSTR, PFR, CSTR followed by PFR, and PFR with recycle, CSTR followed by PFR appeared to be the best choice considering methane conversion rate and the operational stability.

The object of this experiment was to determine the optimum mixing ratio of paper mill sludge and sewage sludge with woodchips as a bulking agent. The bulking agent was mixed with the mixture of paper mill sludge and sewage sludge(2:1 by dried weight) at the rates of 0(W-0), 20(W-20), 33(W-33), and 50(W-50)% on volume basis, and then the mixtures were composted by forced aerated static pile. The changes of physicochemical properties of the mixtures were measured during the composting in order to evaluate the maturity of composts. The temperatures of W-30 and W-50 treatments increased rapidly as soon as the composting started, and reached $60^{\circ}C$ in the fifth day of composting. Reduction of hot water soluble C/N ratio of W-33 and W-50 treatments showed faster than that of W-0 and W-20 treatments at early stage of the composting. The contents of hot water soluble $NO_3{^-}-N$ showed little change in the early stage of the composting in all treatments, but increased rapidly after 20 days of the composting, and the contents of W-0 among all treatments were lower than the others. The G.I. values of W-50 treatment were over 80 before 20 days after starting the composting, those of W-0 treatment were over 80 after 30 days. As a result of evaluation of compost, W-33 and W-50 treatments were found very reasonable at the mixing ratio of a bulking agent. But it is very difficult to aerate compost pile for W-50 treatment than W-33 treatment due to intensified fluctuation of temperature. Considering cost, availability of a bulking agent, and productivity of compost, W-33 treatments more efficient than W-50 treatment.

This study was conducted to induce the optimal composting conditions of pig manure mixed with sawdust and dried paper-mill sludge in the composting for production of high quality compost. Pig manure contains high water content and How C/N ratio because of comparatively high nitrogen content than sawdust and dried paper-mill sludge. Therefore the addition of dried paper-mill sludge and sawdust to the raw materials helps controlling the C/N and the water content of compost pile. The composting system used in the experiment was agitated static bed system. The physical properties of the mixed raw materials was not good at the working conditions in the early stage of composting. The temperature of compost heap reaches at $60^{\circ}C$within 5 day after starting composting in P-2 treatment mixed with pig manure and sawdust(56.6 : 43.4). Then the water content of P-2 was 58%. The pH in all treatments were slowly decreased as the composting was proceeded. Although the changes of T-C and T-N were not extended because of the short composting experiment period. Reduction rates of T-C in treatments were 5-12% without special difference. By considering the efficiency of composting in each of five treatments with pig manure the optimal water contents was about 57% level. Mixing a sawdust as a bulking agent was more positive than dried paper-mill sludge from a viewpoint of compost quality.
To investigate the effects of paper sludge on the seasonal variations of higher fatty acids in paddy soil, paper sludge was applied to pots at the rate of either 300, 600, 900 or 1,200kg/10a. Fractions of the higher fatty acids in the soil were analyzed. 1. Twenty-one kinds of higher fatty acids in the soil were detected. Among them, lauric, myristic, myristoric, palmitic, palmitoleic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, linolenic and arachidic acids were identified. The fatty acid content in the soil of acids, linolonic, myristic, palmitic, and stearic acid increased in ascending order. 2. The total content of higher fatty acids in the soil was increased as the application of paper sludge increased. The formation of the acids was at its highest point at the effective tillering stage. After WARDS the contents of the acids decreased as time elapsed. A positive correlation was observed between the total contents of both higher and volatile lower fatty acids in the soil.
