  • This study compared the morphological and molecular characteristics of the two Pampus spp. in Korea, Japan and China to clarify the long-confused taxonomic status of the two Korean pomfrets named as "Byeong-eo" and "Deok-dae". Among them "Byeong-eo" was identified as Pampus punctatissimus in having the following morphological traits: patch of wavy ridges extending beyond the anterior tip of the pectoral fin, the groove on the lower ridge of gill cover absent, and the number of vertebrae 34. On the other hand, "Deok-dae" was identified as Pampus argenteus in having the following morphological traits: patch of wavy ridges not reaching to the anterior tip of the pectoral fin, the groove on the lower ridge of gill cover reaching to the lower jaw, and the number of vertebrae 38~42. In addition, "Byeong-eo" almost corresponded to P. punctatissimus from Japan in the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit I sequences (genetic distance=0.1%), while "Deokdae" showed genetic distance of 0.3% when compared to P. argenteus from China. Our comprehensive results suggest the validify of P. punctatissimus for "Byeong-eo", and P. argenteus for "Deok-dae".

  • Genetic variation and relationship of two wild (Pampus argenteus and P. echinogaster) and one cultured (P. chinesis) pomfret fish belonging to the genus Pampus were assessed. Specimens were collected from Korea and China and subjected to amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) DNA fingerprinting. Four primer combinations generated a total of 304 DNA fragments ranging from 153 to 251 bands. Polymorphism and genetic diversity of cultured P. chinensis (22.9% and 0.038) were significantly lower than the two wild species of P. argenteus (93.6% and 0.311) and P. echinogaster (94.0% and 0.290). Genetic distance ranged from 0.335 (P. argenteus and P. echinogaster) to 0.646 (P. argenteus and P. chinensis) and showed a congeneric relationship within this genus. Twenty one of specific AFLP markers from four primer combinations bands were produced. These results suggest that AFLP polymorphism may be a useful marker for genetic identification among the three species studies here.

  • The effect of pan frying method was evaluated for proximate composition of selected fish species Pampus argenteus, Lethrinus nebulosus and Acanthopagarus arabicus which were determined by standard procedures. Proximate compositions found in the frying fillets were different to the raw fish samples. The moisture content seems to decrease in all fried samples. The reason of moisture loss at the time of frying produced is excessive protein amount in fried fish as compare to raw fish. Protein content seemed to increase in Pampus argentus > Lethrinus nebulosus and >Acanthopagrus arabicus in their particular fried form. The outcomes shown that protein content was in the ranges of 14.83-25.07 g/100g in fried samples, while the fat content was between 3.76-9.77 g/100 g. The energy content was the highest in the fried fish Lethrinus nebulosus (236 kcal/100 g), Pampus argentus (161 kcal/100 g) and Acanthopagrus arabicus (135 kcal/100 g). The information achieved in this study would be very important to fish consumers, processors and nutritionists to academically increase their awareness regarding the nutrients contents in selected fish species.

  • The ultrastructural study on oocyt development and the process of vitellogensis in the oocytes during oogenesis in female Pampus echinogaster were investigated by electron microscope observations. In the previtellogenic phase, in particular, several intermitochondrial cements appear in the cytoplasms of the chromatin nucleleolus oocyte and perinuclear oocyte. The number of intermitochondrial cements are associated with the multiplication of the number of mitochondria in the early developmental stage. In the early vitellogenic phase, the Golgi complex in the cytoplasm of the yolk vesicle oocyte is involved in the formation of yolk vesicles containing carbohydrate yolks. At this time, many pinocytotic vesicles containing yolk precursors (exogenous substances) by pinocytosis are observed in the cytoplasm near the region of initial formation of the zona pellucida. In the late vitellogenic phase, two morphological different bodies, which formed by the modified mitochondria, appeared remarkably in the yolked oocytes. The one is the multivesicular bodies and another is yolk precursors. The multivesicular bodies were transformed into the primary yolk globules, while yolk precursors were connected with exogeneous pinocytotic vesicles near the zona pellucida. After the pinocytotic vesicles were taken into yolk precursors, the yolk precursors were transformed into the primary yolk globules. Thereafter, primary yolk globules mixed with each other, eventually, they developed into secondary and tertiary yolk globules. In this study, vitellogenesis of this species occurred by way of endogenous autosynthesis and exogenous heteogenesis. Vitellogenesis occurred through the processes of endogeneous autosynthesis, involving the combined activity of the Golgi complex, mitochondria and multivesicular bodies formed by modified mitochondria. However, the process of heterosynthesis involved pinocytotic incorporation of extraovarian precursors (such as vitellogenin in the liver) into the zona pellucida (by way of granulosa cells and thecal cells) of vitellogenic oocytes.

  • Gonadal maturation of the Korean pomfrets, Pampus echinogaster (Basilewsky) and Pampus argenteus (Euphrasen) were histologically investigated based on the samples captured in the East China Sea from January 1987 to December 1988. Gonadosomatic index (GSI) of P. echinogaster began to increase from March, and reached maximum between May and July. It began to decrease from July and reached mini-mum between August and February. P. argenteus had a similar cycle, however, P. argenteus has higher values in April than P. echinogaster. Hepatosomatic index (HSI) were positively related to GSI. HIS of P. echinogaster and P. argenteus reached maximum in $April\~July$ and $April\~August$, respectively, Fatness coefficient of two Pampus species were low in the summer, and high in the winter. Ovary is of saccular structure, and testis is of lobular structure. From February, the early oocyte (ca. $100\mu$ in diameter grows) rapidly at the germinal epithelium of ovarian sacs. From March to April the oocytes grew up to cu $400\~500\mu$ in diameter. At this stage, the yolk globules are accumulated rapidly in the cytoplasmic layer. From May, the oocytes roached ca. $650\~850\mu$ in diameter, and they are spawned in $May\~July$. After spawning the residual follicles and remained ripe eggs degenerate. From February, spermatogonia grows into spermatocyte on the epithelium of the testicular lobuli. From May, spermatozoa appeared and spawning occurs. After spawning, the epithelium is thickened and the remained spermatozoa degenerate. Annual reproductive cycle of two Pampus species could be divided into four successive stages: Growing stage ($March\~April$), Mature stage ($April\~May$), Ripe and spent stage ($June\~July$) and Recovery and resting stage ($August\~January$). Absolute fecundity of P. echinogaster was $9,441\~135,294$, and that of P. argenteus was $50,678\~221,894$. Absolute fecundity of two Pampus species were positively related to body length and total weight. Relative fecundity was positively related to body length, while it was reversely related to total weight. The increasing rate of absolute fecundity of P. echinogaster was lower than P. argenteus. In P. echinogaster half of female and male reached first maturity at body length of $15.0\~$17.9cm and $12.0\~14.9cm$, respectively. All of females and males reached first maturity at body length of $18.0\~20.9cm$ and $21.0\~23.9cm, respectively. In P. argenteus all of females and males reached first maturity at body length of 18.6cm and 16.7cm$, respectively.

  • Investigations were made on population biology of Pampus echinogaster (Basilewsky, 1855) in the coastal areas of Korea, Yellow Sea, between August 2005 and July 2006. Population structure was not significantly different between male and females. Monthly variation of gonadosomatic index (GSI) of both sexes defined spawning period extending from March through July. A similar pattern was also observed in change at maturity stages. For males and females GSI was positively correlated with hepatosomatic index (HSI). Fecundity, ranging from 41,250 to 103,610 eggs, was related to body size, indicating that body size is the useful determinant of fecundity. The sexual maturity ($L_{50}$) was estimated as 14.98 cm TL for males and 19.32 cm TL for females. Parameters of growth estimated by the modified von Bertalanffy growth function model showed that the values of $L_{\infty}$ and K for combined data were 39.12 cm TL and 0.65 $yr^{-1}$. The growth performance index of this study (2.75) was higher than that of the previous study (2.45). This difference could be attributed to sampling method. The recruitment patterns indicated one normally distributed group. Percentage of the recruitment was 51.04% in the spawning season and the highest in August (19.78%).

  • The purpose of present study is to describe the taxonomy and early life history of Korean pomfrets, genus Pampus. Egg diameter varied from $0.83\~1.27mm\;and\;1.05\~1.41mm$ in P. argenteus and P. echinogaster respectively. Larvae of P. echinogaster of 16.5 mm in total length has full number of fin rays and enter the juvenile period. The egg is matured at 185.0 mm in total length in P. argenteus and at 95.5 mm in total length in P. echinogaster. P. echinogaster is ossified from jaw bone at $8.5\~10.0mm$ in to1 length and followed by ossification of vertebrae and visceral skeleton. P. argenteus and P. echinogaster are distinguished by the morphology of jaw, fin and isthmus. In P. argenteus, wavy ridges extends over the upper part of pectoral fin and gill membrane is broadly united to isthmus, while in P. echinogaster the ridges are limited to the base of pectoral fin and gill membrane reaching isthmus. These Pampus spp. are easily distinguished based on internal features, such as number of vertebrae, gill raker, pyloric caeca, epipleural bone, esophageal sat and length of intestine.

  • Reproductive ecology of the silver pomfret, Pampus argenteus were investigated by histological observations and morphometric data. Samples were collected by the stow net at the coastal area of Jaun-Do, Muan-gun, Korea, from January to December, 2006. P. argenteus is dioecious, the ovary is composed of many ovarian lobules, showing a pair of saccular structure, and the testis is composed of many seminiferous lobules, showing a pair of lobular structure. From February (growing stage) to September (after spawning), monthly changes in the gonadosomatic index, hepatosomatic index, and condition factor in females and males showed similar patterns with the gonad developmental phases. Judging from the results of their indice, it is assumed that spawning in females and males occur from May to July. The reproductive cycle can be classified into five successive stages in females: early growing stage (February to March), late growing stage (March to April), mature stage (March to July), ripe and spent stage (May to July), and recovery and resting stage (July to February); in males, the cycle can be divided into four successive stages: growing stage (February to April), mature stage (March to June), ripe and spent stage (May to July), and recovery and resting stage (July to February). According to the frequency distributions of egg diameters in the breeding season, P. argenteus is presumed to be spring-summer spawning species and polycyclic species to spawn 2 times or more during one spawning season. Number of total eggs in absolute fecundity were proportional to body length and body weight, respectively. Number of total eggs in absolute fecundity per body weight were also proportional to the body length, but if the increase of body weight considerably increased, rather total eggs in relative fecundity decreased with the increase of body weight. Percentage of first sexual maturity of P. argenteus were over 50% in females and males of 12.1 to 15.0 cm in body length, and 100% for fishes over 18.1 cm in length. Therefore, both sexes were regarded to be sexually mature at one year of age.

  • To examine the mesh selectivity and optimum mesh size of gill nets for silver promfret Pampus argenteus, the field experiments were carried out during June 27th to July 3rd, 2005 at the coastal area of Imja island. The experimental gill nets for silver promfret were used in two set, which one set was consisted of 12 sheets, and each set was connected alternatively four defferent sheets those were 141mm, 148mm, 155mm and 164mm in mesh size. The analysis of mesh selectivity curve was done by Kitahara's method. The total number of fishes caught by experimental fishing of gill nets for silver promfret was 1,409, and it was consisted of 1,022 silver promfrets(72.5%), 123 croakers(8.7%), 70 red tongue soles(5.0%), 67 blue crabs(4.8%), 22 red seabreams(1.6%), and 105 other fishes(7.4%). The number of fishes caught by the mesh size was 244 at mesh 141mm(mean 6.8/sheet), 261 at mesh 148mm(mean 7.3/sheet), 295 at mesh 155mm(mean 8.2/sheet) and 222 at mesh 164mm(mean 6.2/sheet). The body weight of fishes caught by the mesh size was 102.1kg at mesh 141mm(mean 2.8kg/sheet), 112.9kg at mesh 148mm(mean 3.1kg/sheet), 132.8kg at mesh 155mm(mean 3.7kg/sheet), and 100.4kg at mesh 164mm(mean 2.8kg/sheet). The value of maximum l/m on mesh selectivity curve and the value of l/m on the selection range of 50% was estimated at 1.91 and from 1.63 to 2.23, respectively. Therefore, the optimum mesh size of gill nets for silver promfret was estimated 135mm, and the total length at the selection range of 50% was from 220mm to 301mm. But, it will be useful to use the mesh size of gill nets which is about 10-15% larger than the estimated optimum mesh size of gill nets considering the number of fishes caught, body length and body weight etc.
