  • Conchodytes nipponensis (De Haan, 1844), a caridean shrimp living in the mantle cavity of a pen shell (Atrina pectinata) is reported for the first time from Korea. It was collected from a depth of 15 m depth. Its morphology is described and illustrated, and a color image of a living specimen is provided. This is at the same time the first record of the genus Conchodytes, and the first record of a bivalve mollucs associated shrimp, from Korea.

  • Ultrastructural changes in the cuticle of Paleamon serrifer associated with the intermolt cycle were examined and quantified as changes in the cuticular thickness. The cuticular thickness in each zoea stage increased with time elapsed after molting. The cuticle in the premolt stage was about 1.5 and 3 times thicker than that in the postmolt and intermolt stage, respectively. The cuticle in the premolt stage, including the molting space, was more than 5 times as thick as in the postmolt stage. In addition, newly hatched larvae were individually reared in the laboratory and body length for each specimen was measured frequently until the end of zoea VI. An average increase in body length between one zoea stage and the next is about $10\%$ of the length of the previous stage. Within individual zoea stages, the premolt stage had a body length some 0.3% longer than that of the postmolt stage, indicating a growth rate of about 0.03 mm/d.

  • The larvae of Palaemon gravieri were reared in the laboratory at three different temperature regimes ($15^{\circ}C,\;20^{\circ}C,\;and\;25^{\circ}C$) with the salinity ranges (28-32 psu) to understand how temperature and body size influence survival rate, and growth components (molt increment and intermolt period). The optimum temperature for the highest survival rate was $25^{\circ}C$. The intermolt periods consistently increased with an increase in size and instar number; however, the molt increments at successive instars generally decreased with an increase in size and instar number. The shortest intermolt period and the highest larval growth rate both occurred at $25^{\circ}C$. Thus, the optimum temperature for larval survival and growth rate was found to be $25^{\circ}C$ which was the temperature at which the larvae actually appear in nature.

  • We describe and illustrate two pontoniine shrimps, Cuapetes grandis and Periclimenes ornatus, for the first time in Korea. C. grandis was collected in an artifical reef of Dadae, Geojedo Island by SCUBA diving in 15-20 m depth. This species was found in an oyster within an artificial reef and appeared to be free-living. P. ornatus was collected from Seongsanpo, Jejudo Island by SCUBA diving in 10 m depth. This species had a symbiotic relationship with sea anemone. This record extends their previously known range from southern Japan to the Korean peninsula and the number of known pontoniine species in Korea to four.

  • Two specimens of pontoniine shrimp, Periclimenes brevicarpalis (Schenkel, 1902), having a symbiotic relationship with sea anemones are reported for the first time in Korea. The specimens were collected by SCUBA diving in Jejudo Island. It has a transparent body with a few large white spots on the carapace, abdomen, telson and uropods. Blue bands are on the cheliped and pereiopods. Five brown eyespots with orange centers are on the telson and uropods. The morphology is described and illustrated with a color image of the living specimens. Two species of Korean Periclimenes, P. ornatus, and P. brevicarpalis, can be distinguished by the position of the anterior dorsolateral spine of the telson. This study extends its previously known range from Japan to Korea. Korean pontoniine now includes six species belonging to five genera of Conchodytes, Cuapetes, Onycocaris, Periclimenaeus, and Periclimenes.

  • The palaemonid shrimp Exopazaemon modestus inhabits the freshwater of the Indo-West Pacific, Siberia, Manchuira, Korea, China, Taiwan (Holthuis, 1980) and is abundant in the fresh water areas of southwest of Korea. Palaemonid shrimps are adapted to a variety of habitats in freshwater, brackish and marine environments. They play important role in the ecosystem of fresh, brackish and marine waters, acting as predators feeding on algae, detritus, crustaceans and meiofauna (Bell and Coull, 1978) and in turn, as preys for fishes and other predators (Anderson, 1985).
