  • This study was carried out to investigate the distribution and characteristics of off-type rice plant in farmer's paddy field. The ratio of the field contaminated by off-type rice was highest in the southwestern area, followed by the southeastern area, the central area in Korea. The occurrence density of off-type rice was higher in the southern area than the central area. The short-grain red rice was the most dominant off-type rice group, followed by extremely late and sterile rice group and long-grain red rice group in Korea. The long-grain red rice group was dominant in Jeonnam and Kyongnam, and the extremely late and sterile rice group was dominant in Jeonbuk, and the short-grain red rice group in the other provinces. The culm length of most off-type rice groups growing in the farmer's paddy fields was longer than the farmer's cultivars, and the long-grain red rice group and the short-grain red rice group were especially longer. The number of spikelets per panicle of the off-type rice groups were generally greater than the farmer's cultlvars, and in particular, the extremely late and sterile rice group and the long-grain normal rice group had more spikelet per panicle. Most of the off-type rice groups were extremely sterile.

  • The main objective of this research was to estimate the total mass of nitrogen discharged from various sources in paddy field area of South Korea in 2010 and 2013. Input and output budgets for nitrogen were estimated by mass balance approach. The mass balance approach reduces the effect of flow variations, and the large scale approach minimizes local effects, resulting in easier and faster establishment of strategy for nonpoint pollution problems. Nitrogen inputs were chemical fertilizer, compost, atmospheric deposition, biological fixation, and agricultural water, while crop uptake, denitrification, volatilization, and infiltration were nitrogen outputs. The estimated total nitrogen inputs for paddy field in South Korea were $266,211ton\;yr^{-1}$, $260,729ton\;yr^{-1}$, while those of total nitrogen outputs were $168,463ton\;yr^{-1}$, $164,994ton\;yr^{-1}$ in 2010 and 2013, respectively. Annual amounts of potential nitrogen outflow from paddy field were $97,748ton\;yr^{-1}$, $95,735ton\;yr^{-1}$ in 2010 and 2013. Also, annual rate of potential nitrogen outflow were 36.7%, 36.7% in 2010 and 2013, respectively.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the location characteristics of the rice paddy fields and to predict shrinking areas of them. The study area is in South Korea nationwide, and a 300×300m raster level is adopted as a spatial analysis unit. The binary logit model and spatial simulation model are employed for the analyses. As a result, population, industry, climate and nature, and accessibility play a significant role in determining rice paddy fields' locations. It is predicted that the shrinking rate will be high in Gangwon-do, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and Gyeongsangnam-do until 2027. The hot spots are intensively shaped in the inland of Gangwon-do, eastern parts of Gyeonggi-do, and the borders of Gyeongsangnam-do and Jeollabuk-do between Charyeong and Sobaek mountain ranges. Using Gimcheon-si as an example, the study suggests fundamental policy implications for taking advantage of the simulation results from the lens of local agriculture. Several policy measures are proposed for improving management strategies for the rice paddy fields in the long run.

  • NPS pollutant loads from sandy clayey and clayey loam runoff plots were measured. Runoff plots were 2$\times$10 m in size and 8~10% in slope and paddy area was 4,620 $m^2$. Soybean, corn, tobacco and control (natural weed) were cultured. Precipitation during the growing season of June to October, 2002 was 869.5 mm. Runoff and water quality were measured more than 10 times during the measurements depending on the growing stage. Pollutants loads were estimated by using respective concentration and runoff volume. Runoff occurred when daily rainfall exceeded about 30 mm. The largest runoff was observed from the paddy but pollutant loads were larger from upland crops than those from paddy. SS loads from paddy and upland were 1.4 ton/ha/yr and 3.1~4.3 ton/ha/yr, respectively. COD loads 30 kg/ha/yr and 66~90 kg/ha/yr, T-N loads 13 kg/ha/yr and 14~23 kg/ha/yr, T-P loads 1 kg/ha/yr와 4 kg/ha/yr, nitrate nitrogen loads 1 kg/ha/yr and 4~8 kg/ha/yr, and phosphate phosphorus loads 0 kg/ha/yr and 4~6 kg/ha/yr, respectively. It was concluded that NPS pollutant loads from upland crop culture have greater impact on the quality of the receiving water body than those from paddy culture.

  • The objective of this paper is to develop the microorganism concentration simulation model for the health related effect analysis while farmers and water managers reuse the wastewater for agricultural irrigation. This model consists of the CE-QUAL-R1 model and the CREAMS-PADDY model. The CE-QUAL-R1 model is the 1-D numerical model to analyze the water quality of the reservoir and the CREAMS-PADDY model is modified from CREAMS model for considering the hydrologic cycles in paddy field. This model was applied to examine the application by the observed data from 2003 in Byoungjum study area. From this research, the average root mean square error (RMSE) for the simulated concentration during the calibration period was 0.51 MPN/100ml and correlation coefficient $(R^2)$ was 0.71. And the RMSE for the simulated concentration during the verification period was 0.46 MPN/100ml and $R^2$ was 0.73. This simulation results show that the coliform inflow concentrations by the wastewater irrigation wield great influence upon the temporal coliform concentrations in paddy field.

  • A CELTHYM(CEll-based Long-term HYdrologic Model), a pre-processor and a post-processor that can be integrated with geographic information system(GIS) were developed to predict the stream flow from the small agricultural watershed on the daily basis. The CELTHYM calculates the direct runoff from a grid using SCS curve number method and then sum up all of cells with respect to a sub-catchment area belonged to a stream grid and integrated to an outlet. Base flow of a watershed outlet was computed by integrating of the base flow of each stream grid that was averaged the sub-catchment deep-percolation and calculated with the release rate. Two kind of water budget equation were used to compute the water balance in a grid that was classified into not paddy field and paddy field. One of the two equation is a soil water balance equation to account the soil moisture of the upland, forest and excluding paddy field grid. The other is a paddy water balance equation for the paddy field, calculating the ponding depth, the effective rainfall, the deep percolation and the evapotranspiration.

  • The standard design methodology was suggested to construct wetland system for reducing non-point source pollution from Saemangeum reclaimed paddy land. To set for the design flow and concentrations, runoff and water quality survey were conducted during the irrigation period in 2008 at Gyehwa reclaimed paddy land located at near Saemangeum lake. It is rational that 1ha is the optimum constructed wetland size. To meet this size, the moderate drainage area of reclaimed paddy field was 50ha under the conditions that rainfall is 30mm, average runoff coefficient is 0.83, and runoff capture ratio is 0.6. At these condition, the runoff volume from 50ha was 10,520 $m^3/d$ including base flow during irrigation period. To select the optimum wetland system, several case studies were conducted by focusing on the tidal reclaimed land areas having wetland systems in Seokmun. Pond-Wetland system was selected as the standard model because of showing the highest reduction efficiency. Single variable regression equation were delivered to estimate effluent water concentrations from the designed wetland by using long-term monitoring data from the Seokmun experiment site. The effluent concentration from the designed wetland using these equation were showed moderately range.

  • This study is to predict the spatial expansion of urban areas by applying CA(Cellular Automata)-Markov technique considering MCE(multi-criteria evaluation) and MOLA(multi-objective land allocation) of factor analysis. For the 10 administration districts$(3677.3km^2)$ including the whole Anseong-cheon watershed, the past six temporal land use data(1973, 1981, 1985, 1990, 1994, 2000) from Landsat satellite images were prepared. During this period, the urban area increased $233.71km^2$. Using the 36 indices composed of topological characteristics, population and land use change, the final factor map of MOLA was produced through 5 maps of MCE. Using 1990 and 1994 land use data, the 2000 predicted urban area of CA-Markov with factor map showed 0.06% improvement of absolute error comparing with that of CA-Markov without factor map. By the CA-Markov technique considering factor map, the 2030 and 2060 urban area increased $58.94km^2(0.78%)\;and\;60.14km^2(0.81%)$ respectively comparing with 2000 urban area$(313.19km^2)$. The 2030 and 2060 paddy area decreased $93.28km^2(2.54%)\;and\;93.65km^2(2.55%)$ respectively comparing with 2000 paddy area$(1383.23km^2)$.

  • To compare the rice yield and grain quality characteristics between mature(MPF) and reclaimed paddy field(RPF), grain yield and its components, some physicochemical properties of rice grain and palatability of cooked rice were investigated for Dongjinbyeo grown at three different locations of mature and reclaimed paddy field, respectively, in south western part of Korea. Variation of culm length in mature paddy area was larger than that in reclaimed saline area. Panicle number per m$^2$ in RPF was more then that in MPF but grain number per m$^2$, filled grain ratio and 1, 000-grain weight in RPF were lower than those in MPT. Average yield of milled rice in RPF was 12% lower than that in MPF (5.l1t /ha). Daejeon showed the highest yielding among MPF and Yeongam reveald the highest grain production among RPF. RPF rices had slightly higher carbohydrate content and alkali digestibility but lower protein, fat and amylose content compared with MPF rices. RPF rices also exhibited higher mineral contents, Mg/K ratio, peak and hot viscosity compared with MPF rices. RPF rice showed slightly poor apparent grain quality but a little better eating quality of cooked rice compared with MPF rice.
