Due to fast growth in urbanisation, a highly developed infrastructure is essential for economic growth and prosperity. One of the major problems is to preserve, maintain, and retrofit these structures. To meet the requirements of construction industry, the basic information on all the mechanical properties of various concretes is essential. This paper presents the details of development of various concretes, namely, normal strength concrete (around 50 MPa), high strength concrete (around 85 MPa) and ultra high strength concrete (UHSC) (around 120 MPa) including their mechanical properties. The various mechanical properties such as compressive strength, split tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, fracture energy and tensile stress vs crack width have been obtained from the respective test results. It is observed from the studies that a higher value of compressive strength, split tensile strength and fracture energy is achieved in the case of UHSC, which can be attributed to the contribution at different scales viz., at the meso scale due to the fibers and at the micro scale due to the close packing of grains which is on account of good grading of the particles. Micro structure of UHSC mix has been examined for various magnifications to identify the pores if any present in the mix. Brief note on characteristic length and brittleness number has been given.
A volume integral equation method (VIEM) is introduced for the solution of elastostatic problems in an unbounded isotropic elastic solids containing interacting multiple anisotropic inclusions subject to remote uniaxial tension. The method is applied to two-dimensional problems involving long parallel cylindrical inclusions. A detailed analysis of stress field at the interface between the matrix and the central inclusion is carried out for square and hexagonal packing of the inclusions. Effects of the number of anisotropic inclusions and various fiber volume fractions on the stress field at the interface between the matrix and the central inclusion are also investigated in detail. The accuracy of the method is validated by solving the single inclusion problem for which solutions are available in the literature.
A series of amphiphilic dendrons n-18 (n: generation number, 18: octadecyl chain) based on an aliphatic polyether denderitic core and octadecyl peripheries were synthesized using a convergent dendron synthesis consisting of a Williamson etherification and hydroboration/oxidation reactions. This study investigated their thermal and self-assembling behavior in the solid state using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) absorption spectroscopy, and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). DSC indicated that the melting transition and the corresponding heat of the fusion of the octadecyl chain decreased with each generation. FT-IR showed that the hydroxyl focal groups were hydrogen-bonded with one another in the solid state. DSC and FT-IR indicated microphase-separation between the hydrophilic dendritic cores and hydrophobic octadecyl peripheries. SAXS data analysis in the solid state suggested that the lower-generation dendrons 1-18 and 2-18 self-assemble into lamellar structures based upon a bilayered packing of octadecyl peripheries. In contrast, the analyzed data of higher-generation dendron 3-18 is consistent with 2-D oblique columnar structures, which presumably consist of elliptical cross sections. The data obtained could be rationalized by microphase-separation between the hydrophilic dendritic core and hydrophobic octadecyl peripheries, and the degree of interfacial curvature associated with dendron generation.
Through an experiment with gas chromatography carried out using diethylene glycol succinate(DEGS) as the packing material of the column, we have obtained the correction factor between the weight ratio and the peak dimension of the saturated fatty acid methyl esters of C10, C12, C14, C16, and C18 and unsaturated fatty acid methyl esters of oleic acid, linoloic acid, and linolenic acid, employing the detector of thermal conductivity type. Quantitative analysis of the fatty acids contained in rice Bran oil was performed with the above correction factor and the results are as follows; 1. Main components were found to be palmitic acid, oleic acid sand linolenic acid. No trases of capric acid (C10) lauric acid (C10) were found. 2. It was confirmed that there were straight line relation between the logarism retention time of each fatty acid and the number of carbon of saturated fatty acid or the number of double bond of other fatty acids having the same number of carbon. 3. The correction factor became larger as to the number of carbon increased up to C18 in case of saturated fatty acids, end as for other fatty acids, and as for other fatty acids of the same carbon number, it became larger according as the number of double bond increased.

Objectives: This study was designed to evaluate the changes in the particle filtration efficiencies of five cloth masks (4 plate types, 1 cup type) with an increasing number of machine washings and the degree of cloth expansion. Methods: NaCl aerosols were generated using an atomizer and passed through cloth masks in a dynamic aerosol chamber. Particle concentrations were measured both before and after for the cloth masks using an optical particle counter (OPC) in the size range of $0.3{\sim}10{\mu}m$. Results: In the original condition, the filtration efficiencies of the five cloth masks were A: 20.1%, B:30.9%, C: 25.0%, D: 26.5%, and E: 40.9%. As the number of washings increased in the order of one, two, and four times, the filtration efficiencies of cloth mask C increased. The filtration efficiency of A, D, and E increased after the first washing. With the exception of B, the filtration efficiency of cloth masks increased after the second washing and those of all cloth masks increased after the fourth washing. This might be caused by the fibers untangling from the yarn and being freed at one end. In this status, the packing density of the textile will not change, but the distances between fibers will increase, which might bring about an increase in filtration efficiency. When the cloth masks were extended by 10% and 20% in one direction, the filtration efficiencies of cloth masks B, D, and E decreased at 10% extension, and those of all cloth masks decreased at 20% extension. When the cloth masks were expanded by 10% and 20% in two directions, the filtration efficiencies of all cloth masks decreased by at least 34.7% at 10% extension, and by at least 60.9% at 20% extension Conclusions: The filtration efficiency of cloth masks could decrease after one to two machine washings, but will increase after four washings in comparison with their original performances. The filtration efficiency of cloth masks will decrease when they are expanded, such as when stretching over the nose during wearing status.
A wrapped fruit-vegetable can restrain from evaporating its water, help to be supplied with a little fresh air, prevent from injuring and damaging during transporting to other positions. Therefore, this study was carried out to develop an automatic wrapping system specifically tailored to pack up from one to four numbers of long type fruit-vegetable in wrap foil. Performance tests of the system were conducted by using three different kinds of fruit-vegetable (cucumber, eggplant, Pumpkin) to determine the success wrapping rate. Each fruit-vegetable is divided into two grades such as A grade and B grade. B grade is more bended curve than A grade. The success wrapping rate of eggplant was 100% regardless of the grade and the number of fruit-vegetable. and also that of cucumber was 100% all but packing 4 numbers of B grade. However, that of pumpkin was 45%, As the number and the bended degree of pumpkin was increased, the success wrapping rate of pumpkin was decreased, because the surface area or the bended degree were increased.
Objective: To evaluate the effect of lactic acid bacteria and storage temperature on the microbial, chemical and mycotoxin composition of corn silage. Methods: Corn was harvested at 32.8% dry matter, and chopped to 1 to 2 cm. The chopped material was subjected to three treatments: i) control (distilled water); ii) $1{\times}10^6$ colony forming units (cfu)/g of Lactobacillus plantarum; iii) $1{\times}10^6cfu/g$ of Pediococcus pentosaceus. Treatments in triplicate were ensiled for 55 d at $20^{\circ}C$, $28^{\circ}C$, and $37^{\circ}C$ in 1-L polythene jars following packing to a density of approximately $800kg/m^3$ of fresh matter, respectively. At silo opening, microbial populations, fermentation characteristics, nutritive value and mycotoxins of corn silage were determined. Results: L. plantarum significantly increased yeast number, water soluble carbohydrates, nitrate and deoxynivalenol content, and significantly decreased the ammonia N value in corn silage compared with the control (p<0.05). P. pentosaceus significantly increased lactic acid bacteria and yeast number and content of deoxynivalenol, nivalenol, T-2 toxin and zearalenone, while decreasing mold population and content of nitrate and 3-acetyl-deoxynivalneol in corn silage when stored at $20^{\circ}C$ compared to the control (p<0.05). Storage temperature had a significant effect on deoxynivalenol, nivalenol, ochratoxin A, and zearalenone level in corn silage (p<0.05). Conclusion: Lactobacillus plantarum and Pediococcus pentosaceus did not decrease the contents of mycotoxins or nitrate in corn silage stored at three temperatures.
Dissolution of some of geo-materials may yield the loss of the soil strength and the settlement of earth structures. The goal of this study is to monitor the several physical behaviors of soluble mixtures during dissolution. Sand-salt mixtures are used to monitor the meso to macro response including the settlements and shear waves. The mixtures of photoelastic and ice disks are used to monitor micro to meso behavior of soluble mixture including the void ratio, force chain, coordination number and horizontal force changes. In the sand-salt mixtures, shear waves are measured by using bender elements in conventional oedometer cells. In the photoelastic disk - ice disk mixtures, micro to meso response are measured by digital images and load cells. The shear wave velocity decreases at the initial stage of the dissolution, and then increases and approaches to asymptotic value. The larger dissoluble particle and the more random packing produces the severe horizontal fore change. After dissolution, the void increases and the coordination number decreases. This study demonstrates that the particle level behavior such as the changes of the force chain, void ratio, and coordination number affects the global behavior such as the change of the shear wave velocity and horizontal force of the system.

The objective of this paper is to investigate experimentally the effect of replacement of recycled coarse aggregates with 5~13mm in size on a field applicability of concretes through Mock-up test. Seven different mock-up specimens were prepared with the size of $1200{\times}800{\times}800mm$ simulating column and wall. For the concrete mixtures, 24MPa, 27MPa and 40MPa of nominal strength were adopted with 30% and 70%(only for 24MPa) of 5~13mm recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) replacement and without 5~13mm RCA(Plain). For test items, slump, slump flow, compressive strength with different curing conditions, core drilling, rebound numbers and drying shrinkage were measured. Test results indicated that 30% of 5~13 mm RCA replacement resulted in increase in slump, slump flow and resistance against segregation, while air contents decreased compared to those of plain mixture. Compressive strength of concrete with 30% of 5~13mm RCA was shown to be higher than that of plain mixture due to optimum packing effect associated with presence of well graded aggregates. Rebound number of the mock-up specimen with 30% of 5~13mm RCA had lower fluctuation according to hitting location than that of plain mock-up specimen. It is believed from the results of the study that replacement of 30% of 5~13mm RCA brings desirable improvement in various aspect of concrete performance due to associated dense packing effect.

It was investigated to develop the technology for simultaneous removal of $SO_2/NO$ in flue gas using liquid homogeneous catalyst. Test was carried out using a bench scale and a pilot scale experiment. The investigation led to the following results: 1) Removal efficiency of $SO_2$ gas showed good results regardless of operating condition. Removal efficiency of NO gas, however, proportionally increased with higher packing height, lower concentration and larger injection rate of catalyst 2) The optimum design parameters for simultaneous removal of $SO_2/NO$ gas using Fe(II)-EDTA catalyst were as follow: HTU(height of transfer unit) = 0.5 m, liquid gas ratio = 20 $L/m^3$, NTU (number of transfer unit) = 3 stages, cross dimension of scrubber=0.025 $m^2$ 3) The removal efficiencies of $SO_2$ and NO were 95% and 81%, repletely. 4) The high HTU is advantageous on removal of the NO, but the excessive HTU diminishes operating efficiency. Consequently, it is important to decide the HTU of optimum.
