Due to the development of the communication technology and the high-performance mobile device, the number of video streaming service user has been increasing. Video streaming services in the restricted network environments need error control to support users for the Ultra High Definition(UHD) video delivery. Packet-level FEC method was used to control the error for delay-sensitive video service, but it has a defect in huge occupation of network resources by redundant packets. In this paper, we proposed a packet-level FEC algorithm which maintains the video quality by previous FEC methods and also reduces the occupation of network resource in the restricted network environments. The proposed algorithm controls the redundant rate with using the delivery characteristic of the video coding technology, and improves the efficiency of network resources by reducing the traffic by around 33% in comparison with the previous FEC methods.
Wireless mobile networks tend to drop a large portion of packets due to propagation errors rather than congestion. To Improve reliability over noisy wireless channels, wireless networks can employ forward error correction (FEC) techniques. Static FEC algorithms, however, can degrade the performance by poorly matching their overhead to the degree of the underlying channel error, especially when the channel path loss rate fluctuates widely. This paper investigates the benefits of an adaptable FEC mechanism for wireless networks with severe packet loss by analytical analysis or measurements over a real wireless network called sensor network. We show that our adaptive FEC named FECA (FEC-level Adaptation) technique improves the performance by dynamically tuning FEC strength to the current amount of wireless channel loss. We quantify these benefits through a hybrid simulation integrating packet-level simulation with bit-level details and validate that FECA keeps selecting the appropriate FEC-level for a constantly changing wireless channel.
In the current Internet, the QoS of interactive applications is hardly guaranteed because of variable bandwidth, packet loss and delay. Moreover, VoIP which is becoming an important part of the information infra-structure in these days, is susceptible to network packet loss and end-to-end delay. Therefore, it needs error control mechanisms in network level or application level. The FEC-based error control mechanisms are used for interactive audio application such as VoIP. The FEC sends a main information along with redundant information to recover the lost packets and adjusts redundant information depending on network conditions to reduce the bandwidth overhead. However, because most of the error control mechanisms do not consider end-to-end delay but packet loss rate, their performances are poor. In this paper, we propose a new error control algorithm, SCCRP, considering packet loss rate as well as end-to-end delay. Through experiments, we confirm that the SCCRP has a lower packet loss rate and a lower end-to-end delay after reconstruction.

The packet loss and the disconnection during handoff are the most critical problems which degrade the video quality in wireless video streaming. To cope with these problems, we propose an efficient video streaming method in this paper, which does not only dynamically adjust the video transmission rate based on the raptor forward error correction (FEC) level, but also minimize the error propagation during handoff. Firstly, the channel bandwidth of the wireless broadband internet, called WiBro, is estimated by analyzing channel parameters including the carrier to interference and noise ratio (CINR) and the handoff. Secondly, the streaming server adjusts the next transmission rate according to the estimated channel bandwidth and the raptor FEC level to avoid packet error. Also, the encoder performs the intra refresh method that inserts an intra frame (I-frame) right after handoff to reduce the error propagation effectively. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method can improve the performance of the video streaming over WiBro network.
In u-healthcare services based on wireless body sensor networks, reliable connection is very important as many types of information, including vital signals, are transmitted through the networks. The transmit power requirements are very stringent in the case of in-body networks for implant communication. Furthermore, the wireless link in an in-body environment has a high degree of path loss (e.g., the path loss exponent is around 6.2 for deep tissue). Because of such inherently bad settings of the communication nodes, a multi-hop network topology is preferred in order to meet the transmit power requirements and to increase the battery lifetime of sensor nodes. This will ensure that the live body of a patient receiving the healthcare service has a reduced level of specific absorption ratio (SAR) when exposed to long-lasting radiation. We propose an efficientmethod for delivering delay-intolerant data packets over multiple hops. We consider forward error correction (FEC) in an erasure correction mode and develop a mathematical formulation for packet-level scheduling of delay-intolerant FEC packets over multiple hops. The proposed method can be used as a simple guideline for applications to setting up a topology for a medical body sensor network of each individual patient, which is connected to a remote server for u-healthcare service applications.
This paper, at first, provides analysis on loss pattern of Internet based on real experiments of the current Internet. Then, we propose an effective adaptive QoS management technique, in which measured loss pattern as well as PLR (Packet Loss Ratio) are used to select titrate of temporal scalability. level of FEC and retransmission This selection is also incorporated to the MPEG-4 error resilience tools and error concealment techniques. In order to minimize effect of packet loss, multimedia stream is segmented in the unit of group of Pictures (GOP) and interleaving and FEC are applied to the segment. Proposed algorithms are applied to build a VOD system.

In accordance with a demand for high quality video streaming, it needs high data rate in limited bandwidth and more traffic congestion occurs. In particular, when providing real time video service, packet loss rate and bit error probability increase significantly. To solve these problems, a raptor code, which is one of FEC(Forward Error Correction) techniques, is pervasively used in the application layers as a method for improving real-time service quality. In this paper, we propose a method of determining image transmission parameters based on various deep neural networks to increase transmission efficiency at a similar level of image quality by using raptor codes. The proposed neural network uses the packet loss rate, video encoding rate and data rate as inputs, and outputs raptor FEC parameters and packet sizes. The results of the proposed method present that the throughput is 1.2% higher than that of the existing multimedia transmission technique by optimizing the transmission efficiency at a PSNR(Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio) level similar to that of the existing technique.
This study discusses Application-layer FEC using erasure codes. Because of the simple decoding process, erasure codes are used effectively in Application-layer FEC to deal with Packet-level errors. The large number of parity packets makes the loss rate to be small, but causes the network congestion to be worse. Thus, a redundancy control algorithm that can adjust the number of parity packets depending on network conditions is necessary. In addition, it is natural that high-priority frames such as I frames should produce more parity packets than low-priority frames such as P and B frames. In this paper, we propose a redundancy control algorithm that can adjust the amount of redundancy depending on the network conditions and depending on data priority, and test the performance in simple links and congestion links.

In wireless network environments, wireless channels are characterized by time-varying fading and interference conditions, which may lead to burst packet corruptions and delay variation. This can cause severe quality degradation of streaming media. To guarantee successful transmission of media over the hostile wireless networks, where channel conditions are highly fluctuating, a flexible and network-adaptive transport method is required. Thus, we propose a network-adaptive transport error control consisting of packet-level interleaved FEC and delay-constrained ARQ, which acts as an application-level transport method of streaming media to alleviate burst packet losses while adapting to the changing channel condition in wireless networks. The performances of the proposed network-adaptive transport error control, general error control schemes, and hybrid schemes are evaluated by a developed simulator at the transport-level and video quality of streaming media. Simulation results show that the proposed mechanism provides the best overall performance among compared other schemes in terms of the transport-level performance of error control and the performance of video quality for streaming media.
As wireless mobile networks have been widely adopted due to their convenience for deployment, the research for improving their performance has been actively conducted. Since their throughput is restrained by the packet corruption rate not by congestion as in wired networks, however, network simulations for performance evaluation need to select the appropriate wireless channel model representing the behavior of propagation errors for the evaluated channel. The selection of the right model should depend on various factors such as the adopted frequency band, the level of signal power, the existence of obstacles against signal propagation, the sensitivity of protocols to bit errors, and etc. This paper analyzes 10-day bit traces collected from real sensor channels exhibiting the high bit error rate to determine a suitable sensor channel model. For selection, it also evaluates the performance of two error recovery algorithms such as a link layer FEC algorithm and three TCPs (Tahoe, Reno, and Vegas) over several channel models. The comparison analysis shows that CM(Chaotic Map) model predicts 3-time less BER variance and 10-time larger PER(Packet Error Rate) than traces while these differences between the other models and traces are larger than 10-time. The simulation experiments, furthermore, prove that CM model evaluates the performance of these algorithms over sensor channels with the precision at least 10-time more accurate than any other models.
