  • This work analyzes the performance of the parallel packet switch (PPS) with a sliding window (SW) method. The PPS involves numerous packet switches that operate independently and in parallel. The conventional PPS dispatch algorithm adopts a round robin (RR) method. The class of PPS is characterized by deployment of parallel low-speed switches whose all memory buffers run more slowly than the external line rate. In this work, a novel SW packet switching method for PPS, called SW-PPS, is proposed. The SW-PPS employs memory space more effectively than the existing PPS using RR algorithm. Under identical Bernoulli and bursty data traffic, the SW-PPS provided significantly improved performance when compared to PPS with RR method. Moreover, this investigation presents a novel mathematical analytical model to evaluate the performance of the PPS using RR and SW method. Under various operating conditions, our proposed model and analysis successfully exhibit these performance characteristics including throughput, cell delay, and cell drop rate.

  • In offering a statistical end-to-end bandwidth guarantee service, typically called Assured Service, in Differentiated Serviced (Diff-Serv) framework, the biggest issue is its inconsistency. Larger profile TCP flows fail to achieve the guaranteed rate when competing with many smaller profile flows. This phenomenon, which we call "bandwidth skew", stems from the fact that larger profile flows take longer time to recover from the congestion window size backoff after a packet drop. Proposed solutions to this problem, therefore, are focused on modifying the TCP behavior. However, TCP modification is not practicable, mainly due to its large installation base. We look to other mechanisms in the Diff-Serv framework to find more realistic solutions. In particular, we demonstrate that RIO, the de facto standard packet differentiation mechanism used for Assured Service, also contributes to the bandwidth skew. Based on this new finding, we design a modified RIO mechanism called RI+O. RI+O uses OUT queue length in addition to IN and IN+OUT queue length to calculate OUT packet drop probability. We show through extensive simulation that RI+O significantly alleviates the bandwidth skew, expanding the operating regime for Assured Service.d Service.

  • To support Internet traffic efficiently over ATM \networks, Guaranteed Frame Rate(GFR) has been proposed in tile ATM Forum to ensure minimum rate guarantees to VCs. In this paper, we proposed fuzzy logic based buffer management algorithm that provides MCR guarantee and fair sharing to GFR VCs. A key feature of proposed algorithm is its ability to accept or drop a new incoming packet dynamically based on buffer condition and load rate of VCs. This is achieved by using fuzzy logic controller for the production of a drop factor. Simulation result shows that proposed scheme significantly has improved fairness and TCP throughput compared with previous schemes.

  • This paper has addressed the scheme to design single rate Rate Adaptive Shaper (srRAS) proposed in RFC2963. srRAS is the shaper used in conjugation with downstream single rate Three Color Marker (srTCM) described in RFC269. it is tail-drop First Input First Out (FIFO) queue that is drained at a variable rate. srTCM meters IP packet streams from srRAS and marks its packets to be either green, yellow, or red. This shaper has been proposed to use at the ingress of differentiated services networks providing AF PHB. And then srRAS can reduce the burstiness of the upstream traffic of srTCM. This paper addresses algorithm, architecture of srRAS, and the scheme to implement srRAS using Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) and the related technology.

  • This paper has addressed the implementation of the single rate Rate Adaptive Shaper(srRAS) described in RFC2963. This shaper has been proposed to use at the ingress of differentiated services networks providing Assured Forwarding Per Hop Behavior (AFPHB). srRAS is typically used in conjunction with single rate Three Color Marker(srTCM) described in RFC2697. srRAS itself is the tail-drop FIFO that is drained at a variable rate, and srTCM is the marker with metering function. G-srRAS is the same as srRAS except that RAS receives the green token state information from the downstream srTCM to avoid delaying a packet in RAS although there are sufficient tokens available to color the packet green. In this paper, we have addressed the algorithm and the architecture of srRAS, and the scheme to implement srRAS using VHDL(Very high-speed integrated circuit Hardware Description Language) and its related tools.

  • The AQM (Active Queue Management) starts dropping packets earlier to notify traffic sources about the incipient stage of congestion. The AQM improves fairness between response flow (like TCP) and non-response flow (like UDP), and it can provide high throughput and link efficiency. In this paper, we suggest the QVARED (Queue Variation Adaptive RED) algorithm to respond to bursty traffic more actively. It is possible to provide more smoothness of average queue length and the maximum packet drop probability compared to RED and ARED (Adaptive RED). Therefore, it is highly adaptable to new congestion condition. Our simulation results show that the drop rate of QVARED is decreased by 80% and 40% compare to those of RED and ARED, respectively. This results in shorter end-to-end delay by decreasing the number of retransmitted packets. Also, the QVARED reduces a bias effect over 18% than that of drop-tail method; therefore packets are transmitted stably in the bursty traffic condition.

  • Active queue management (AQM) refers to a family of packet dropping mechanisms for router queues that has been proposed to support end-to-end congestion control mechanisms in the Internet. The proposed AQM algorithm by the IETF is Random Early Detection (RED). The RED algorithm allows network operators simultaneously to achieve high throughput and low average delay. However. the resulting average queue length is quite sensitive to the level of congestion. In this paper, we propose the Refined Adaptive RED(RARED), as a solution for reducing the sensitivity to parameters that affect RED performance. Based on simulations, we observe that the RARED scheme improves overall performance of the network. In particular, the RARED scheme reduces packet drop rate and improves goodput.

  • To support Internet traffic efficiently over ATM networks, Guaranteed Frame Rate(GFR) has been proposed in the ATM Forum. GFR provides minimum rate guarantees to VCs and allows any excess bandwidth in the network to be shared among the contending VCs in a fair manner. In this paper, we proposed a new fuzzy logic based buffer management algorithm that provides MCR guarantee and fair sharing to GFR VCs. A key feature of proposed algorithm is its ability to accept or drop a new incoming packet dynamically based on buffer condition and load ratio of VCs. This is achieved by using fuzzy logic controller for the production of a drop factor. • In the packet data network systems beyond 3G, the service quality of current users is affected by traffic load due to the packet burstiness. There also exists a hot cell problem, a well-known problem of cellular systems, caused by traffic centraliBation. Hot cell problem is one of the major reasons of degrading system performance because hot cell increases the call drop rate without fully utilization of system resource. Therefore, it is very important to distribute the traffic on the several neighboring cells so that system uses its resource effectively and maintains the quality of service. In this paper, we propose the adaptive handoff algorithms for distributing traffic in the packet data network systems. In addition, we propose a new load estimation method with MAC state diagram suitable for packet data network systems. Through the simulation results, we could find that proposed algorithm is able to improve efficiency of system resource and to assure the service quality of users through traffic distribution.
