  • In the guaranteed service, a real-time scheduling algorithm must achieve both high level of network utilization and scalable implementation. Here, network utilization indicates the number of admitted real-time sessions. Unfortunately, existing scheduling algorithms either are lack of scalable implementation or can achieve low network utilization. For example, scheduling algorithms based on time-stamps have the problem of O(log N) scheduling complexity where N is the number of sessions. On the contrary, round-robin algorithms require O(1) complexity. but can achieve just a low level of network utilization. In this paper, we propose a scheduling algorithm that can achieve high network utilization without losing scalability. The proposed algorithm is a Hierarchical Round-Robin (H-RR) algorithm that utilizes multiple rounds with different interval sizes. It provides latency bounds similar to those by Packet-by-Packet Generalized Processor Sharing (PGPS) algorithm using a sorted-Priority queue. However, H-RR requires a constant time for implementation.

  • In this research, we propose packet scheduling algorithm considering different QoS characteristics of real-time traffic and non-real-time traffic in the next generation wireless communication system serving the multimedia traffic and a new efficient framing method cooperated with this packet scheduler. When the selected traffic classes of the selected users are transmitted, our proposed framing method can increase the number of serviced traffic classes by mixing the many different traffic classes within one frame considering data rate decided by the allocated AMC (Adaptive Modulation and Coding) option. Using this proposed method, the fairness among the traffic classes can be achieved and the system performance for total throughput and delay can be enhanced. Simulations are performed to analyze the performance of the proposed framing method. Our proposed packet scheduler and framing method will be applied to the next generation multimedia wireless communication system serving many traffic classes.

  • High-rate wireless personal area network (HR-WPAN) has been standardized by the IEEE 802.15.3 task group (TG). To support multimedia services, the IEEE 802.15.3 TG adopts a time-slotted medium access control (MAC) protocol controlled by a central device. In the time division multiple access (TDMA)-based wireless packet networks, the packet scheduling algorithm plays a key role in quality of service (QoS) provisioning for multimedia services. In this paper, we propose an adaptive cross-layer packet scheduling method for the TDMA-based HR-WPAN. Physical channel conditions, MAC protocol, link layer status, random traffic arrival, and QoS requirement are taken into consideration by the proposed packet scheduling method. Performance evaluations are carried out through extensive simulations and significant performance enhancements are observed. Furthermore, the performance of the proposed scheme remains stable regardless of the variable system parameters such as the number of devices (DEVs) and delay bound.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel resource allocation scheme which can maximize capacity for QoS guarantee of Assured Service in Differentiated Services. Performance of the proposed resource allocation scheme is analyzed with each buffer management scheme such as RIO and Adaptive RIO. To prevent an early random drop of the admitted In-profile packet, Adaptive RIO scheme updates parameters of RIO scheme every time interval according to the estimated numbers of maximum packet arrivals of In-profile traffic and Out-of-profile traffic during the next time interval. The numbers of maximum packet arrivals during the next time interval are estimated based on the buffer size determined by the network topology and the ratio of bandwidth allocated to each subclass. We can find from simulation results that proposed resource allocation scheme with Adaptive RIO can guarantee QoS and can maximize capacity for Assured Service.

  • Service discovery is the technology of finding needed services in networks, and a key point in pervasive computing environments. This paper presents a novel service discovery protocol: ASESDP(AIP and SRR Enhanced Service Discovery Protocol). In ASESDP, tow schemes are proposed to enhance its performance: AIP(Advertisement Information Piggybacked) and SRR(Shortest Reply Route). In AIP, parts of advertisement information are piggybacked in the service reply packet, which makes the advertisement information propagating along the reply path, and spreads its transmission area. In SRR, in order to reduce the service response time, the shortest reply route is chosen to forward the service reply packet to the source node sending the service request. With the theoretical analysis and Glomosim simulation results, it is verified that ASESDP can reduce the number of service request packets, save the response time, and improve the efficiency of service discovery.

  • Recently, as 3rd-generation mobile communication services using high-speed data rate system are widely employed, the demand for a variety of real-time data services such as VoIP service are also increased. Unlike typical data packets, VoIP packets have delay bound and low loss rate requirement. In this paper we propose a new scheduling algorithm that schedule two deferent kinds of packets efficiently, considering the characteristics of VoIP. Basically this algorithm considers both time delay and channel condition and gives priority depending on the time delay. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm works more efficiently than conventional algorithms.

  • This paper analyzes transmissiondelays of a message and a packet in a time-varying and packet-based radio link. The paper assumes that thearrivals of messages have a Bernoulli process and the lengths of the messages a exponential distribution. To reflect the feature of the time-varying radio link, we use a two-state Markov model. From the model the mean transmission delay of and the mean queue length of the packet are analyzed in terms of the packet distribution function, the packet transmission service time, and the PER of the radio link. And the mean message transmission delay time and the mean queue length are derived using the performance indices of the packet. Numerical results show that the message arrival rate and the message length have some bounds to keep the transmission of the message steady and to improve the performance indices of the message. It can be known that the PER of the state influences on the performance indices more than the sojourn time of the state.

  • Increase of data traffic and the advent of new real-time services require to change from the traditional TDM-based (Time Division Multiplexing) networks to the optical networks that soft and dynamic configuration. Voice and lease line services are main service area of the traditional TDM-based networks. This optical network became main infrastructure that offer many channel that can convey data, video, and voice. To provide high resilience against failures, Packet-optical networks must have an ability to maintain an acceptable level of service during network failures. Fast and resource optimized lightpath restoration strategies are urgent requirements for the near future Packet-optical networks with a Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching(GMPLS) control plane. The goal of this paper is to provide packet-optical network with a hierarchical multi-layer recovery in order to fast and coordinated restoration in packet-optical network/GMPLS, focusing on new implementation information. The proposed schemes do not need an extension of optical network signaling (routing) protocols for support.

  • In this paper, we proposed an Adaptive RIO scheme to solve the problem of RIO scheme that occurs when admission control is performed for QoS guarantee of Assured Service in Differentiated Services. To prevent an early random drop of the admitted In-profile packet, proposed Adaptive RIO scheme updates parameters of RIO scheme every time interval according to the estimated numbers of maximum packet arrivals of In-profile traffic and total traffic during the next time interval. The numbers of maximum packet arrivals during the next time interval are estimated based on the buffer size determined by the network topology and the ratio of bandwidth allocated to each subclass. We found from simulation results that, compared with RIO scheme, proposed Adaptive RIO scheme can improve performance of the throughput for In-profile traffic when admission control is performed or congestion occurs.

  • In this paper, we propose a QoS-aware efficient bandwidth re-provisioning scheme in a next generation wireless packet transport network. At the transport network layer, it classifies the traffic of the radio network layer into a real time class and a non-real time class. Using an auto-regressive time-series model and a given packet loss probability, our scheme predicts the needed bandwidth of the non-real time class at every re-provisioning interval. Our scheme increases the system capacity by releasing the unutilized bandwidth of the non-real time traffic class for the real-time traffic class while insuring a controllable upper bound on the packet loss probability of a non-real time traffic class. Through empirical evaluations using the real Internet traffic traces, our scheme is validated that it can increase the bandwidth efficiency while guaranteeing the quality of service requirements of the non-real time traffic class.
