  • Greedy forwarding is the key mechanism of geographic routing and is one of the protocols used most commonly in wireless sensor networks. Greedy forwarding uses 1-hop local information to forward packets to the destination and does not have to maintain the routing table, and thus it takes small overhead and has excellent scalability. However, the signal intensity reduces exponentially with the distance in realistic wireless sensor network, and greedy forwarding consumes a lot of energy, since it forwards the packets to the neighbor node closest to the destination. Previous proposed greedy forwarding protocols are the sender-based greedy forwarding that a sender selects a neighbor node to forward packets as the forwarding node and hence they cannot guarantee energy efficient forwarding in unpredictable wireless environment. In this paper, we propose the receiver-based greedy forwarding called RGF where one of the neighbor nodes that received the packet forwards it by itself. In RGF, sender selects several energy efficient nodes as candidate forwarding nodes and decides forwarding priority of them in order to prevent unnecessary transmissions. The simulation results show that RGF improves delivery rate up to maximum 66.8% and energy efficiency, 60.9% compared with existing sender-based greedy forwarding.

  • Packet forwarding in the Internet routers is to find out the longest prefix that matches the destination address of an input packet and to forward the input packet to the output port designated by the longest matched prefix. The IP address lookup is the key of the packet forwarding, and it is required to have efficient data structures and search algorithms to provide the high-speed lookup performance. In this paper, an efficient IP address lookup algorithm using binary search is investigated. Most of the existing binary search algorithms are not efficient in search performance since they do not provide a balanced search. The proposed binary search algorithm performs perfectly balanced binary search using switch pointers. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated using actual backbone routing data and it is shown that the proposed algorithm provides very good search performance without increasing the memory amount storing the forwarding table. The proposed algorithm also provides very good scalability since it can be easily extended for multi-way search and for large forwarding tables

  • In the MPLS(Multiprotocol Label Switching) forwarding paradigm, once a packet is assigned to a FEC(Forwarding Equivalence Class), no further header analysis is done by subsequent routers; all forwarding is driven by the labels. This has a number of advantages over conventional network layer forwarding. The MPLS LER(Label Edge Router) is located at the boundary of MPLS domain and plays a role in connecting with the existing Internet as an ingress or an egress router. That is, the MPLS LER as an ingress router assigns a label to a packet which enters the MPLS network from the Internet by analyzing its header and forwards to a corresponding next router in MPLS domain. As an egress router, the MPLS LER turns the packets out of the MPLS network by performing the reverse operation. In this paper, we analyze the traffic performance of an MPLS LER system and estimate the IP(Internet Protocol) packet processing capacity of the system using queueing model and simulation. It is found that the maximum IP packet processing capacity of the system is estimated by 420,000 through 460,000 packets/sec.

  • As the edge router provides the facility that it is capable of interworking with various kinds of networks, the forwarding engine should have the flexibility processing the corresponding types of frames from such network interfaces. In order to support the flexibility, we design and implement a prototype of edge router with ATM and Ethernet interfaces based on the programmable Ethernet packet processor Our forwarding engine handles and forwards the frames from ATM interfaces by using loop-back functionality of Ethernet packet processor. The performance of our edge router is evaluated by experiments throughout its performance of forwarding engine and tested by interworking with another kinds of routers.

  • MPLS stands for “Multi-protocol Label Switching”. It's a layer 3 switching technology aimed at greatly improving the packet forwarding performance of the backbone routers in the Internet or other large networks. We compare the performance of unlabeled IP traffic and labeled IP traffic. In this paper, by varying the packet rate and measuring throughput of the flows we analyze the performance of labeled IP packet traffic and unlabeled IP packet traffic in IP over MPLS.

  • In this paper, we analyzed mobile-IP protocol of IETF, and propose new method to improve performance in handover environments. In proposed method, cache agent manages mobility binding information for mobile host. Thus, effective support of mobility is possible. Also, when handover occurs, mobile host recognizes change of foreign agent, and transmits registration message to new foreign agent. However, during registration time, data packet loss is occurs in old foreign agent. Thus, we prevent data loss by using data packet buffering and forwarding in old foreign agent.According to simulation results for data packet transmission performance in the case of handover occurring, proposed method has better performance than previous method in the view of transmission delay and throughput. Especially, if handover occurs very often, data buffering and forwarding method in foreign agent could guarantee better performance.

  • With the invention of MPLS and the Improvement in traffic engineering, multipath packet forwarding and dynamic load control has become a reality. A dynamic load control, while it can improve network efficiency by controlling loads between paths according to the network state, can lead to unstable and oscillating state because of the staleness of the state information. In this paper, we propose a efficient load control scheme which remains stable. The proposed scheme introduces prediction to reduce the staleness of state message and to prevent oscillation.

  • The message propagation between vehicles must be efficiently performed to quickly transmit information between vehicles in vehicle ad hoc networks (VANETs). Broadcasting can be the most effective solution for propagating these messages. However, broadcasting can cause broadcast storm problems, which can reduce the performance of the overall network. Therefore, rapid information delivery in VANET requires a method that can propagate messages quickly without causing the broadcast storm problems. This paper proposes a lightweight and opportunistic broadcast (LOB) protocol that leverages the features of opportunistic routing to propagate messages quickly while minimizing the load on the network in VANETs where the network topology changes frequently. LOB does not require any routing information like greedy forwarding scheme, and neighboring nodes at the farthest distance within the range of transmission nodes are likely to be selected as forwarding nodes, and multiple forwarding candidate nodes like opportunistic routing scheme can increase packet transmission rates. Simulation results using ns-2 showed that LOB outperformed existing broadcast protocols in terms of packet rate and packet delay.

  • In this paper, we propose an Enhanced cross-layer Geographic Forwarding (EGF) protocol for wireless sensor networks (WSNs). EGF uses an optimal back-off time to make the packet forwarding decisions using only source and destination's location information and energy cost without information about neighbor nodes' location or the number of one hop neighbor nodes. EGF is also a cross-layer protocol by combining efficient asynchronous MAC and geographic routing protocol. The proposed protocol can find optimal next hop location quickly without broadcasting node's location update and with minimizing overhead. In our performance evaluation, EGF has better performance in terms of packet success ratio, energy efficiency and end-to-end delay in wireless sensor networks.
