Performance Assessment of a Lithium-Polymer Battery for HEV Utilizing Pack-Level Battery Hardware-in-the-Loop-Simulation System

  • A pack-level battery hardware-in-the-loop simulation (B-HILS) platform is implemented. It consists of dynamic vehicle models using PSAT and multiple control interfaces including real-time 3D driving and GPS mode. In real-time 3D driving mode, user can drive a virtual vehicle using actual drive equipment such as steering wheel and accelerator to generate the cycle profile of the battery. In GPS mode, actual road traffic and terrain effects can be simulated using GPS data while the trajectory is displayed on Google map. In the latter part of the paper, several performance tests of an actual lithium-polymer battery pack are carried out utilizing the developed system. All experiments are conducted as parts of actual development process of a commercial battery pack adopting 2nd generation Prius as a target vehicle model. Through the experiments, the low temperature performance and fuel efficiency of the battery are quantitatively investigated in comparison with the original nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) pack of the Prius.

Sterilization Test of Microorganisms of Slow-released ClO2 Gas Gel-Pack (서방출형 이산화염소 가스 젤팩의 미생물 살균 시험)

  • Even though chlorine dioxide ($ClO_2$) is utilized in a pre-treatment due to its effective sterilizing activity for microorganisms and its safety for food, it has a limitation in maintaining freshness of the food product. In this study, a low-concentration $ClO_2$ gas was produced in a packaging form of air-permeable gel pack so that it could be released continuously over several days. The amount of $ClO_2$ gas emission and microbial inactivation effect against foodborne pathogens were measured during the release of $ClO_2$ gas. As a result of measuring the change of color in order to confirm whether the chlorine dioxide gas was eluted in the form of a sustained release, the yellowness was significantly higher at higher gel pack concentration and higher value during storage periods. The slow-released $ClO_2$ gel-pack showed clear inactivation effect against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus with 99.9% inactivation efficiency. As a result of measuring the sterilization effect of Listeria monocytogenes by the concentration of chlorine dioxide gas, the sterilization effect was increased as the concentration was increased. Therefore, the slow-released $ClO_2$ gel-pack is feasible to apply for industry usages.

Effects of Ice pack application for the postcardiac surgery toddlers before C-tube removal (심장수술 환아의 흉관제거시 통증에 대한 냉요법의 효과)

  • A quasi-experimental study was conducted to examine the effect of ice pack application to post cardiac surgery toddlers before C-tube removal. Twenty toddlers aged 13 months to 24 months, who were admitted to the hospital for open heart surgery during the period from July, 1993 to October, 1993 were randomly assigned to the experimental or control group. An ice pack was applied to the C-tube insertion site for 8 minutes before C-tube removal for the experimental group. The children were videotaped during the procedure to assess pain behavior and crying time. The score on the Modified Behavioral Pain Scale(MBPS), crying time, and vital signs were measured to determine the effect of ice pack application. The data were analyzed using Mann-Whitney U test, Paired t-test, and Pearson correlation coefficient. The result of the study are as follows : 1. There was a significant difference between the experimental group and the control group in pain behavior (U=17.0, p=.01). 2. There was no significant difference between the two groups in crying time. 3. There was a significant difference between the two groups in heart rate (U=24.5, p=.05). 4. There was a significant difference between the two groups in systolic blood pressure (U=24.0, p=.05) 5. There was a significant difference between the two groups in diastolic blood pressure (U=23.0, p=.04). 6. There was no significant difference between the two groups in respiration rate. 7. Pain behavior was significantly correlated with heart rate, systolic blood pressure, and crying time (r=.50, .54 and .59, p<.05). The result showed that the ice pack application was effective to reduce pain related to C-tube removal for the toddlers. From the study, it is recommended that the effectiveness of the cold ap-plication to children undergoing different painful procedures be examined to determine the most effective length of cold application to reduce pain in children.

  • A series of thermal destruction studies of the most heat resistant yeast strain No. 15 among 61 isolates were conducted in order to establish the optimum pasteurization condition of peach solid pack. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. A survival curve of the selected yeast strain No. 15 at $58^{\circ}C$ consisted of heat labile and heat stable fraction, showing broken curve. 2. The actively growing cell showed less recovery rate than 10 day rested cell after agitation-growing for 90 hr. For heating menstrua, peptone solution gave higher recovery rate than peach juice. For recovery medium, YM agar gave higher recovery rate than peach juice agar. The selected yeast was more resistant to heat at pH 4.0 than at pH 3.5 in both heating menstrua and recovery medium. 3. Z value of TDT curve of the selected yeast (heating : at pH 3.5 in peach juice. recovery: at pH 3.5 in peach juice agar) was $4.8^{\circ}C$. 4. The selected yeast No. 15 was identified as Torulopsis candida. 5. In the inoculated pack test of 4 oz can, it was concluded that the optimum P.U. 70/5 was 168 (center temp; $78.5^{\circ}C$, initial temp; $18^{\circ}C$, processing time; 18 min, initial yeast count; $1.0{\times}10^7$ per can).

  • The purpose of present study is to assess the effects of capsaicin topically applicated to the chronic periodontal pain suffering area. In the First study, twenty patients with chronic pain caused by mild periodontal disease were selected, and periodontal pack containing capsaicin(PPC) was attached to these patients gingiva around pain suffering area. Then the presence of discomfort had been recorded every ten minutes for the first 1 hour. After 1 hour again, It had been recorded according to the presence of pack and to the existence of pain. In the second study, twenty moderate periodontitis patients were selected. After subgingival curettage of two quadrant area, non-euginol periodontal pack or PPC were attached to the curetted gingival margins of them (Non-euginol pack bearing area and capsaicin pack bearing area is supposed to control group and test group respectively.), and the degrees of pain with time had been recorded eight times with 1 hour interval (at that day) or recorded once in a day (from the next day to the next appointment day). The results are as follows : 1. PPC has caused discomfort accompanied by burning sensation to the mild periodontitis patients with chronic pain. 2. PPC has given little effects to improve the pain after subgingival curettage of moderate periodontitis patients.

The High Temperature Oxidation Behavior of Diffusion Aluminized MarM247 Superalloy

  • The MarM247 based superalloy (8wt.%Cr- 9wt.%Co- 3wt.%Ta- 1.5wt.%Hf- 5.6%wt.Al- 9.5wt.%W- Bal. Ni) specimens were diffusion aluminized by for types of pack cementation methods, and their coating structure and their high temperature oxidation resistance were investigated. The coated specimens treated at 973K in high aluminum concentration pack had a coating layer containing large hafunium rich precipitates, which were originally included in substrate alloy. After the high temperature oxidation test in air containing 30 vol.% $H_2O$ at 1273K ~ 323K, the deep localized corrosion which reached to the substrate were observed along with these hafnium rich precipitates. On the other hand, the coated specimens treated at 1323K using low aluminum concentration pack showed the coating layer without the large hafunium rich precipitates, and after the high temperature oxidation test at 1273K for 1800 ksec, it did not show the deep localized corrosion. The nickel electroplating before the aluminizing forms thick hafnium free area, and its high temperature oxidation resistance were comparable to platinum modified aluminizing coatings at 1273K.

Comparative study on the resistance performance of an icebreaking cargo vessel according to the variation of waterline angles in pack ice conditions

  • The resistance performance of an icebreaking cargo vessel according to the variation of waterline angles is investigated numerically and experimentally. A recently developed Finite Element (FE) model is used in our analysis. A resistance test with synthetic ice is performed in the towing tank at Pusan National University (PNU) to compare and validate the computed results. We demonstrate good agreement between the experimental and numerical results. Shipice interaction loads are numerically calculated based on the Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) method in the commercial FE package LS-DYNA. Test results from model testing with synthetic ice at the PNU towing tank are used to compare and validate the numerical simulations. For each waterline angle, numerical and experimental comparisons were made for three concentrations (90%, 80%, and 60%) of pack ice. Ice was modeled as a rigid body, but the ice density was the same as that used in the experiments. A comparative study according to the variation of stem angles is expected to be conducted in the near future.

Processing and Mechanical Properties of Ni-Cr and Ni-Cr-Al Foams by Pack-Cementation

  • Open-cell Ni-Cr and Ni-Cr-Al(with gamma/gamma prime microstructure typical of Bi-base super alloys) foams are manufactured by pack-cementation at $1000{\boxplus}$degrees C, followed by homogenization at $1200{\boxplus}C$. The resulting alloyed foams retain the low relative densities (less than 3.5 wt.%). The oxidation behavior of Ni-Cr foams turns out to be identical to that of bulk Ni-Cr alloys, after taking into account the foam's higher surface area. The room-temperature compressive behavior of the Ni-Cr and Ni-Cr-Al is compared to model predictions. Additionally, the foam creep behavior, measured between 680 and $825{\boxplus}C$ in the stress range of 0.1-0.3 MPa, compared to two analytical models, namely strut compression and strut bending as high-temperature deformation modes.

  • The resistance performance of an icebreaking cargo vessel with varied stem angles is investigated numerically and experimentally. Ship-ice interaction loads are numerically calculated based on the fluid structure interaction (FSI) method using the commercial FE package LS-DYNA. Test results obtained from model testing with synthetic ice at the Pusan National University towing tank and with refrigerated ice at the National Research Council's (NRC) ice tank are used to validate and benchmark the numerical simulations. The designed icebreaking cargo vessel with three stem angles ($20^{\circ}$, $25^{\circ}$, and $30^{\circ}$) is used as the target ship for three concentrations (90%, 80%, and 60%) of pack ice conditions. The comparisons between numerical and experimental results are shown and our main conclusions are given.

The Comparison of the Time Effect between Hot pack and Static Stretching Exercise for Lumbar Flexibility (온열요법과 스트레칭이 시간에 따라 요부의 유연성에 미치는 영향의 비교)

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of heat therapy, stretching exercise and to verify which method was most effective for lumbar flexibility improvement. Subjects were 20 apparantly healthy person(male10, female10) who did not have any medical problem. They were randomly divided and assigned into 2 groups: heat therapy, stretching exercise. For testing flexibility, trunk flexion, bunk extension, and Schober-test were performed. Pre-test was done prior to the each group's treatment. Test was done at 2nd week, 4th week and 6th week. There were no significant difference in improvement of trunk flexion and trunk extension after 6 weeks treatment among 2 methods. However in all 2 groups, there were statically significant improvement in flexibility as time go on. The rate of improvement was highest at 2nd week, while this was attenuated afterwards. The Schober-test score changed significantly from pre-test to the mid-test and to the post-test, while there were no significant difference among 2 methods of treatment. With the results above, it was concluded that heat therapy, stretching-exercise were all effective for improving flexibility without any significant priorities.
