In this study, we fabricated and evaluated the performance of film speaker using PVDF/ZnO NP composite structure. PVDF piezoelectric films were fabricated and characterized by XRD and SEM. ZnO nanopillars were prepared by hydrothermal synthesis on prepared PVDF piezoelectric films. We analyzed and tested the acoustic signal characteristics of the piezoelectric film. In order to fabricate an acoustic structure with a wide frequency range from low to high frequency, we have fabricated various types of film speakers and investigated the frequency characteristics. As a result, the fundamental piezoelectric properties of PVDF show that the piezoelectric constant due to ZnO NP increases. And the overall acoustic signal level is also increased by 10% or more. We investigated frequency generation from 500 Hz to 10 KHz using different sizes with PVDF/ZnO NP composite film speaker.
This paper represents the development of an array-type flexible tactile sensor using PVDF(polyvinylidene fluoride) film and flexible circuitry. The tactile sensor which has $8{\times}8$ taxels is made by using PVDF film and FPC(flexible printed circuit) technique. Experimental results on static and dynamic properties are obtained by applying arbitrary forces and frequencies generated by the shaker. In the static characteristics, the threshold and the linearity of the sensor are investigated. Also dynamic response of the sensor subjected to the variable frequencies is examined. The signals of a contact force to the tactile sensor are sensed and processed in the DSP system in which the signals are digitalized and filtered. Finally, the signals are integrated for taking the force profile. The processed signals of the outputs of the sensor are visualized on a personal computer, the shape and force distribution of the contacted object are obtained using two and three-dimensional image in real time. The reasonable performance for the detection of contact state is verified through the experiment.

A modal transducer in two-dimensional structure can be implemented by varying the distributed transducer's gain spatially. In this paper, a method based on finite element method is developed for optimizing spatial gain distribution of PVDF transducer to create the modal transducer for specific modes. Using this concept, one can design the modal transducer in two-dimensional structure having arbitrary geometry and boundary conditions. As a practical means for implementing this continuous gain distribution without repoling die PVDF film, the gain distribution is approximated by optimizing gain-weights of interface circuit. The whole spatial area of the PVDF film is divided into several electrode segments and the signals from each segment are properly weighted and summed by interface circuit. This corresponds to the approximation of a continuous function using discrete values. The electrode partition is optimized using the genetic algorithm. Gain-weights are optimized using the simplex search method. A modal sensor for first to fourth modes of aluminum plate is designed using PVDF film with gain-weighted interface circuit. Various lamination angles of PVDF film are taken into consideration to utilize the anisotropy of the PVDF film. Performance of the optimized' PVDF sensor is demonstrated by numerical simulations..
This research is the development of a flexible tactile sensor array for service robots using PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) film for the detection of a contact state in real time. The prototype of the tactile sensor which has 8${\times}$8 array using PVDF film was fabricated. In the fabrication procedure, the electrode patterns and the common electrode of the thin conductive tape were attached to both sides of the 281$\mu\textrm{m}$ thickness PVDF film using conductive adhesive. The sensor was covered with polyester film for insulation and attached to the rubber base for a stable structure. The proposed fabrication method is simple and easy to make the sensor. The sensor has the advantages in the implementing for practical applications because its structure is flexible and the shape of the each tactile element can be designed arbitrarily. The signals of a contact force to the tactile sensor were sensed and processed in the DSP system in which the signals are digitized and filtered. Finally, the signals were integrated for taking the force profile. The processed signals of the output of the sensor were visualized in a personal computer, and the shape and force distribution of the contact object were obtained. The reasonable performance for the detection of the contact state was verified through the sensing examples.

An acoustic sensor using PVDF film is proposed in this paper. And its properties, such as sensitivity level, identification of sound source frequencies. and directivity, were experimented. Sensitivity level measured at the distance of 1[m] was limited in the range of ${\pm}$10dB. Adjacent three frequencies were also tested to identify the frequency of sound sources. In the range of audible frequencies, it could distinguish the frequencies of a complex sound. In addition, it was found that the sensor outputs were maximum in the coincided direction with a source, when directivity was experimented with three sound sources and FFT. The proposed PVDF film sensor has good characteristics of directivity and identifying ability as an acoustic sensor.

In this study, we develop a Korotkoff sound based automatic blood pressure measurement device including sensor, hardware, and analysis algorithm. PVDF-based sensor pattern was developed to function as a vibration sensor to detect of Korotkoff sounds, and the film's output was connected to an impedance-matching circuit. An algorithm for determining starting and ending points of the Korotkoff sounds was established, and clinical data from subjects were acquired and analyzed to find the relationship between the values obtained by the auscultatory method and from the developed device. The results from 86 out of 90 systolic measurements and 84 out of 90 diastolic measurements indicate that the developed device pass the validation criteria of the international protocol. Correlation coefficients for the values obtained by the auscultatory method and from the developed device were 0.982 and 0.980 for systolic and diastolic blood pressure, respectively. Blood pressure measurements based on Korotkoff sound signals obtained by using the developed PVDF film-based sensor module are accurate and highly correlated with measurements obtained by the traditional auscultatory method.

The prototype of a tactile sensor with $4\times 4$ taxels using PVDF was fabricated. The electrode patterns of the thin Cu tape are attached to the 28${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ thickness PVDF using conductive adhesive and covering the sensor using polyester film for insulation. The structure of the sensor is flexible and the fabrication procedure is easy relatively. Also the output characteristics of the sensor was nearly linear with 8% deviation. The signals of a contact pressure to the tactile sensor are sensed and processed through A/D converter, DSP system and personal computer. The reasonable performance for the detection of contact shape and force distribution was verified through the experiment.
A thick 25 ${\mu}m$ thickness poled P(VDF/TrFE) film pyroelectric infrared ray sensor has been fabricated and then thin 1.6 ${\mu}m$ thickness P(VDF/TrFE) film pyroelectric infrared ray sensor has been fabricated also. These thick and thin P(VDF/TrFE) film pyroelectric infrared ray sensor was mounted in TO-5 housing to detect infrared light of 5.5 ~ 14 ${\mu}m$ wavelength for human body detecting with each other. The noise output voltage of the thick P(VDF/TrFE) film pyroelectric infrared ray sensor were 380 mV and NEP(noise equivalent power) is $3.95{\times}10^{-7}$ W which is the similar value with the commercial pyroelectric infrared ray sensor using ceramic materials as a sensing material. The NEP and specific detectivity $D^*$ of the thin P(VDF/TrFE) film pyroelectric infrared ray sensor were $2.13{\times}10^{-8}$ W and $9.37{\times}106$ cm/W under emission energy of 13 ${\mu}W/cm^2$ respectively. These result caused by lower thermal diffusion coefficient of a thin 1.6 ${\mu}m$ thickness PVDF/TrFE film than the thick 25 ${\mu}m$ thickness poled P(VDF/TrFE) film pyroelectric infrared ray sensor.

Patch type piezo-polymer sensors for smart structures were experimented to detect elastic wave. The pencil lead braking test was performed to analyze the characteristics of patch-type piezo-polymer sensors such as polyvinyliden fluoride (PVDF) and polyvinylidene fluoride trifluorethylene (P(VDF-TrFE)) for several test specimens with various elastic wave velocities and acoustical impedances. The characteristics of the patch-type piezo-polymer sensor were compared with the commercial PZT acoustic emission (AE) sensor. The vacuum grease and epoxy resin were used as a couplant for the acoustic impedance matching between the sensor and specimen. The peak amplitude of elastic wave increased as the diameter of piezo-film and acoustical impedance of the specimen increased. The frequency detection range of the piezo-film sensors decreased with increasing diameter of the piezo-film sensor. The P(VDF-TrFE) sensor was more sensitive than the PVDF sensor.
