  • This study examined the durability of face-slab concrete in Concrete-Faced Rock-filled Dams(CFRDs). The durability of face-slab concrete can be improved by optimizing the amount of fly ash in the cement mixture. Durability tests including plastic shrinkage, permeability, abrasion resistance, and repeated freezing and thawing were done on face-slab concrete specimens with different amounts of fly ash and blended PVA(Poly Vinyl Alcohol) fibre. When the effect of the fly ash content on concrete durability was evaluated, the results showed that a 15% fly ash content and 0.1% blended PVA fiber yielded the optimum durability level for concrete-faced rock-filled dams.

  • This study analyzed the effect of mixing order on the flowability, compressive strength, and flexural strength of cement composites reinforced with polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) fibers and multi-walled carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs). The experimental results showed that the addition of CNTs significantly reduced the flowability, and the flowability was considerably affected by the mixing order when CNTs were added. The compressive strength was most effectively improved when water and CNTs solution were mixed first before adding PVA fibers, and the flexural strength was highest when water and CNTs solution were mixed with PVA fibers after dry mixing. However, there was no clear correlation between the flexural toughness and the mixing order. In addition, scanning electron microscopy(SEM) image analysis was conducted to analyze the microstructure. The SEM images showed that CNTs were randomly dispersed through the specimens and contributed to the strength improvement, but the effect of the mixing order was not clearly observed. The main results of this study are expected to be useful for evaluations of workability and material performance of PVA fiber-reinforced cement composites with CNTs.

  • $V_2O_5$ nanowire / polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) polymer composite fibers were fabricated by a new simple method. The reaction of PVA and acetone facilitates the formation of the polymer membrane which can be used to make the fiber. Composite fiber is percolative in the conductance because of the low percolation threshold in $V_2O_5$ nanowire networks. The fiber composite can be applied to the electromagnetic shielding originating from the conductive nature.

  • In this study, the tensile properties of hybrid fiber reinforced cementitious composites under the high strain rate was evaluated. Experimental results, the HSF1.5PVA0.5 shown the highest tensile strength because the PVA fiber suppressed the micro cracks in the matrix around the hooked steel fiber and improved the pull-out resistance of hooked steel fiber. Thus, DIF of strain capacity and fracture toughness of HSF1.5PVA were greatly improved. Also, the fracture toughness was greatly improved because the tensile stress was slowly decreased after the peak stress by improvement of the pull-out resistance performance of hooked steel fiber at strain rate 101/s.

  • In this study, Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber was used to increase strength (unconfined compressive strength and tensile strength) of bio-cemented sand using microorganism. Ottawa sand was mixed with PVA fibers having three fiber contents (0, 0.4, and 0.8%). The fiber mixed sand was treated 14 times by using Microbially Induced Calcite Precipitation (MICP) which included culture (2 times per day) during 7 days to improve its engineering properties. The Bacillus Sporosarcina pasteurrii (Bacillus sp.) was used for urease activity. The specimen was prepared as a cylindrical specimen of 5 cm in diameter and 10 cm in height. Unconfined compressive strength and tensile strength were measured after cementation. Moreover, calcium carbonate content and SEM analyses were performed with a piece of sample. An average value of unconfined compressive strength increased and then slightly decreased but an average value of tensile strength ratio increased with increasing carbonate content the in same condition. Unconfined compressive strength and tensile strength increased about 30% and 160%, respectively. A strength ratio of unconfined compressive strength to tensile strength representing the brittleness decreased from 8 to 4 when fiber content increased from 0.0 to 0.8%. Such bio-cemented sand can be applied into slope area to prevent its shear failure or increase its tensile strength.

  • Recently, application of CSG is increasing in various design construction projects. At the initial stage of cementation CSG materials show the same mechanical characteristics as soil, however, as the cementation process develops, CSG materials gradually reveal material characteristics of concrete. The hardened CSG manifests elastic behavior such as maximum strength at small strain range and rapid brittle failure. In this research, PVA fiber stiffeners were used in order to: (1) reduce such brittle behavioral characteristics; (2) improve the relatively weak tension performance of CSG materials. The binding strength between the bed materials and fiber prevents rapid brittle failure and increases tensional strength of fiber reinforced CSG materials.Test results show that fiber reinforcement alone could induce the stress-strain characteristics of CSG materials from brittle failure to ductile failure and also increase the residual strength.

  • In this study, the physical, mechanical, structural, and environmental performances based on field measured data were evaluated to check the suitability of concrete for ecological preservation and cultivation of a hydrophilic environment. More specifically, the study is focused on developing an environmentally friendly functional concrete with river ecology restoration and natural river early formation capabilities. The mechanical performance evaluation results showed that the increase in mix rate of the PVA (Poly Vinyl Alcohol) reinforcement fibers and silica fume caused an increase in the strength. The optimal mix rate was found to be 0.05 volume % PVA fiber and approximately 10% silica fume. The frost resistance evaluation showed that superior performance was gained when 0.05 volume % PVA fiber and 15% silica fume was mixed simultaneously. In the structural performance evaluation, the bending strength was improved by 47.7% compared to plain concrete when mixed with 0.05 volume % PVA fiber. The flexural toughness also saw significant improvement. The environmental monitoring of field performance showed that grasses germinated most rapidly, but the growth of red poppies, a plant that germinates in the spring, was most active with passing of time. Coverage measurements in all of the monitoring locations found favorable coverage of over 95% after 12 weeks. The study results showed that the environmentally friendly functional concrete had outstanding environmental performance.

  • Basalt fiber has many advantages as a reinforcing fiber such as high tensile strength and similar density to concrete. This study investigated the bonding property and the effect of fiber orientation on tensile strength of basalt fiber. Single fiber pullout tests for basalt and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers were performed to evaluate the bonding property between basalt fiber and mortar. And then tensile strength of basalt, PVA, and polyethylene (PE) fibers according to fiber orientation were measured. From the test results, it was exhibited that the chemical bond, frictional bond, and slip-hardening coefficient of basalt fiber were 1.88, 1.03, 0.24 times of PVA fibers, respectively. And the strength reduction coefficient of basalt fiber was 9 times of PVA fiber and 3 times of PE fiber.

  • Recently, many attempts have been made to develop high strength and high modulus fibers from conventional polymers such as poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)[1-4] and polyethylene (PE). PVA has potentiality to yield high strength and high modulus fiber, since they have high theoretically attainable moduli because of their planar zig-zag structure. As PVA has a melting temperature as high as 230$^{\circ}C$ in contrast to PE with a low melting temperature such as 130$^{\circ}C$, it seems possible that high strength and high modulus fibers comparable to Aramid can be fabricated from PVA. • Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/waterborne polyurethane (WBPU)/montmorillonite clay (MMT) nanocomposite nanofibers were prepared using electrospinning technique of aqueous solutions. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and thermal gravimetric analyzer were used to characterize the morphology and properties of the nanocomposite nanofibers. Since PVA, WBPU and MMT are hydrophilic, non-toxic and biocompatible materials, these nanocomposite nanofibers can be used for filter and medical industries as wound dressing materials, antimicrobial filters, etc.
