  • Reducing energy consumption in mobile hosts (MHs) is one of the most critical issues in wireles/mobile networks. IP paging protocol at network layer and power saving mechanism (PSM) at link layer are two core technologies to reduce the energy consumption of MHs. First, we investigate the energy efficiency of the current IEEE 802.11 power saving mechanism (PSM) when IP paging protocol is deployed over IEEE 802.11 networks. The result reveal that the current IEEE 802.11 PSM with a fixed wakeup interval (i.e., the static PSM) exhibits a degraded performance when it is integrated with IP paging protocol. Therefore, we propose an adaptive power saving mechanism in IEEE 802.11-based wireless IP networks. Unlike the static PSM, the adaptive PSM adjusts the wake-up interval adaptively depending on the session activity at IP layer. Specifically, the MH estimates the idle periods for incoming sessions based on the exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) scheme and sets its wake-up interval dynamically by considering the estimated idle period and paging delay bound. For performance evaluation, we have conducted comprehensive simulations and compared the total cost and energy consumption, which are incurred in IP paging protocol in conjunction with various power saving mechanisms: The static PSM, the adaptive PSM, and the optimum PSM. Simulation results show that the adaptive PSM provides a closer performance to the optimum PSM than the static PSM.

  • MDD is suitable to satisfy constraints of development of mobile applications. So, there are various studies about applying MDD to the developments of mobile application but systematic development methods about UML profile for PIM/PSM of mobile applications and model transformation techniques are needed. This paper suggests that a development technique about UML profile for PIM/PSM of mobile applications and a model transformation techniques with the profiles. We classify stereotypes by the characteristics of mobile application to compose profiles and suggest development guidelines of profiles for PIM/PSM. On the suggested model transformation process, the PIM with the profiles is transformed to the intial PSM with the mapping rules and the PSM is transformed to the refined PSM with templates which reflected detailed information of a mobile platform. We developed a location based service mobile application with the suggested techniques on the Android platform and compared with other techniques to validate usefulness of the suggested techniques.

  • In the early construction phase of the Korea Train Express (KTX), the Movable Scaffolding System (MSS) for the top structure of the bridge was the predominant construction method. But the method had to be changed due to arising problems and an alternative method had to be found. Company H that participated in Korea Train Express construction project achieved excellent results of performance through the introduction of the Precast Span Method (PSM), which has been previously successfully employed in foreign express train projects. This study intends to verify the superior performance of PSM over MSS in the KTX construction process by conducting a comparative analysis on PMS and MSS based on the field experience of company H. This study will not only help to understand PSM, which is expected to expand its future scope of application, but also contribute to solve the problems of PSM that occurred during the construction phase.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine whether personality and reward affect PSM of new maritime police officer recruits. Results are as follows. First, among the personality factors, the neuroticism sub-factor had significant positive effect on PSM sub-factors favorable perception towards public policy, commitment to public interest, and empathy. Also, the extroversion sub-factor had significant effect only on the self-sacrifice sub-factor of PSM. Second, the reward factor mostly didn't have significant effect on PSM. The internal reward sub-factor had significant effect on the empathy sub-factor of PSM. These results confirm that personality factors have significant impact on public service motivation. This implicates the need for policy improvements to reflect this result, and further empirical studies on the relationship between reward and public service motivation.

  • In order to maintain construction industry and to improve efficiency, the Korean government legislated private investment system. Private sector takes advantages by adopting CM (Construction Management) project system, however, public sector has relatively less capability and experience than private sector. In this paper, PSM (Partnership Support Management) is addressed in order to actively strengthen the project capabilities for public sector. PSM maintains existing CM project system because it is a concept of expended business model of CM. PSM needed to categorize the private participated project into 5 phases; project development phase, project announcement phase, project evaluation phase, project agreement phase and agreement changing phase. PSM business structure and business process considering stakeholder's interrelationship and participation are suggested in this research. Suggested PSM business model may not only increase a comprehensive understanding of government and project capability, but also may reduce work load and responsibilities for project momentum of private participation in infrastructure.

  • Quality assurance in high level education is one of the most important problems in Korea, and around the world. Many studies have examined means of assuring the quality of education, mostly focusing on what type of graduate we should launch into the real world. However, it has been realized only in technical fields, such as Engineering, Medicine, etc. Here, we discuss the problems of Korean high level education in scientific fields, and present some answers from American innovation policies. The USA has changed the idea about how to innovate, and in recent years has developed the Professional Science Master's(PSM) degree, which is now awarded by over 100 American universities. PSM programs have produced graduates who can innovate in scientific fields, e.g., in biology, environmental science, and statistics. The degree is highly praised by the Council On Competitiveness, which consists of CEOs of major corporations, university presidents, and heads of labor organizations. The PSM seems to meet their expectations. Interestingly, many research universities have established PSM programs. We examined the reasons why many American universities have accepted the PSM despite their daily duties for research and doctoral education. Finally, we discuss the possibility that programs such as the PSM can succeed in Korean universities.
