As a step towards discovering novel pathogenesis-related proteins, we performed a genome scale computational identification and characterization of secreted and transmembrane (TM) proteins, which are mainly responsible for bacteria-host interactions and interactions with other bacteria, in the genomes of six representative Burkholderia species. The species comprised plant pathogens (B. glumae BGR1, B. gladioli BSR3), human pathogens (B. pseudomallei K96243, B. cepacia LO6), and plant-growth promoting endophytes (Burkholderia sp. KJ006, B. phytofirmans PsJN). The proportions of putative classically secreted proteins (CSPs) and TM proteins among the species were relatively high, up to approximately 20%. Lower proportions of putative type 3 non-classically secreted proteins (T3NCSPs) (~10%) and unclassified non-classically secreted proteins (NCSPs) (~5%) were observed. The numbers of TM proteins among the three clusters (plant pathogens, human pathogens, and endophytes) were different, while the distribution of these proteins according to the number of TM domains was conserved in which TM proteins possessing 1, 2, 4, or 12 TM domains were the dominant groups in all species. In addition, we observed conservation in the protein size distribution of the secreted protein groups among the species. There were species-specific differences in the functional characteristics of these proteins in the various groups of CSPs, T3NCSPs, and unclassified NCSPs. Furthermore, we assigned the complete sets of the conserved and unique NCSP candidates of the collected Burkholderia species using sequence similarity searching. This study could provide new insights into the relationship among plant-pathogenic, humanpathogenic, and endophytic bacteria.
This study was performed to determine the characteristics of physical and mechanical properties of domestic wood based materials; plywood, particleboard, medium density fiberboard. Main items of tested properties were panel size, moisture content, water absorption, linear expansion and thickness swelling, glue bond shear strength, bending properties(stress at proportional limit, modulus of rupture. modulus of elasticity), tensile strength, screw holding strength, and internal bond as neccessary. the results were discussed mainly with Korean Standards. The obtained conclusions are as follows; 1. Length and width of 3mm thin plywood(3-ply) and 12mm thick plywood(7-ply) were satished with KS-standard, but thicknesses of these panels were not- passed tolerance limit except one of eight makers. 2. Length and width of particleboard and medium density fiberboard were greater than the tolerance limit value of KS standard, but the thicknesses of these panels were passed this value. 3. Moisture contents of 12mm thick and 3mm thin plywood were satisfied with KS-standard except one mill made 3mm thin plywood. 4. Moisture absortion of plywood was not passed tolerance limit of KS-standard but particleboard was satisfied with this standard value. 5. Dry and wet shear strengths in glue bond of 3mm thin plywood were not reached to KS-standard, but those of 12mm thick plywood were sufficiently satisfied with KS standrad. 6. Modulus of ruptures, parallel to grain and perpendicular to grain of plywood, and particleboard and medium density fiberboard were satisfied with KS-standard. 7. Tensile strengths, parallel to grain and perpendicular to grain of plywood were satisfied with allowance stress of US product standard PS 1-74. 8. Screw holding strength of particleboard was not reached to KS standard, but internal bond was satisfied with KS standard.
We have fabricated by metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) In$\_$0.13/Ga$\_$0.87/N/GaN multiple quantum well (MQW) with thickness as thin as 10 A and barriers also of th same width on (0001) sapphire substrate. We have investigated this thin MQW by steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence(PL) in picosecond time scale in a wide temperature range from 10 to 290 K. In the PL at 10 K, we observed a broad peak at 3.134 eV which was attributed to the quantum well emission of InGaN. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) of this peak was 129 meV at 10 K and its broadening at low temperatures was considered to be due to compositional fluctuations and interfacial disorder in the alloy. The narrow width of the quantum well was mainly responsible for the broadening of the emission linewidth. We also observed an intense and sharp peak at 3.471 eV of GaN barrier. From the temperature dependent PL measurements, the activation energy of the InGaN quantum well emision peak was estimated to be 69 meV. The lifetime of the quantum well emission was found to be 720 ps at 10 K, which was explained in terms of the exciton localization arising from potential fluctuations.

Aromatic hydrocarbons are of major concern among genotoxic chemicals due to their toxicity and persistence. Some microorganisms can utilize aromatic hydrocarbons as carbon and energy sources by inducing expression of catabolic operon(s). The XylR regulatory protein activates transcription of the catabolic enzymes to degrade BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene) from its cognate promoters, Pu and Ps upon exposure of the cells to the aromatic hydrocarbons. The activity of XylR on the promoters was previously monitored using luciferase luc reporter system. The xylR, its promoter Pr and the promoter Po for the phenolic compound catabolic operon were introduced upstream of firefly luciferase luc in the pGL3b vector to generate about 7.1 kb of pXRBTEX. Here E. coli harboring the plasmid was freeze-dried under various conditions to fin,d optimal conditions for storage and transport. The cell viability and luciferase activity were maintained better, when the cells were freeze-dried at -7$0^{\circ}C$ in the addition of the 10% skim milk or 12% sucrose. However, coaddition of protectants such as 10% skim milk plus 10% glucose or 12% sucrose plus 10% glucose, resulted in much better viability and bioluminescence activity compared with the effect of single addition of each protectant. In addition, it was shown that the freeze-dried cells maintained almost intact bioluminescent activities and cell viability for at least 1 week after freeze-drying. This work demonstrated that the properly freeze-dried recombinant bacterial cells could be utilized as a whole-cell biosensor for simple and rapid monitoring of BTEX in the environment.

Extracellular phospholipase $A_2$ activity has been detected in urine of patients with acute pyelonephritis (APN). This enzyme required micromolar $Ca^{2+}$ ion for its maximum activity and showed a broad range of pH (4.5~10) optimum. Urine enzyme hydrolyzed phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and phosphatidylserine (PS) more effectively than phosphatidylcholine (PC). $PLA_2$ activity in the urine of patients with APN was about 5-fold higher than that of healthy individuals. When urine was subjected to heparinSepharose column chromatography, phospholipase $A_2$ activity was detected in both heparin-non-binding and binding fractions. Both phospholipase $A_2$ activities were sensitive less than a micromolar calcium concentration and did not react with anti-human 14-kDa group II phospholipase $A_2$ monoclonal antibody, HP-l. These findings suggest that two kinds of novel extracellular phospholipase $A_2$. which may not belong to the 14-kDa group II phospholipase $A_2$ family, exist in the urine of patients with APN.
Effects of dietary protein qualify, energy restriction, and subsequent rehabilitation were studied in the weanling rats. Rats were devided into the six experimental diet groups. Rats in AC (casein- containing diet ), AS (soyprotein-containing diet), and AG(gluten-containing diet) group consumed their diets ad libitum, and rats in PC, PS, PG groups were pair-fed in 60% of the of amounts eaten by corresponding rats in the AC, AS, AG groups, respectively. After 3 weeks of nutritional restriction, all rats were switched to the AC diet for 14 days. At the end of restriction period, body weight, weight gain, food intake, and FER were higher in casein- fed rats than other groups of rats. The differences were, however, disappeared with rehabilitation diet, except body weights which were not fully recovered until the end of experiment. The weights of liver, gastrocnemius muscle, kidney, small intestine, spleen, and lung were the highest in the casein group, and the lowest in gluten group at the end of restriction period. The recovery with rehabilitation diet were differ in different organs. The muscle and liver seemed to be the most affected organs by dietary protein quality and energy restriction. There were no differences in brain weights among the experimental groups during the restriction period, however, after 2 weeks of rehabilitation, rats in AC group showed lower brain weight compared to AC and AS groups, and the brain weight of PC group was lower than AC group. Protein contents in liver and muscle showed the same trends as their weights. Gluten-fed rats showed low serum protein concentration, but recovered fully with rehabilitation diet for 3 days.
In mathematics education, teaching-learning activity can be divided largely into the understanding the mathematical concepts, derivation of principles and laws, acquirement of the mathematical abilities. We utilize various media, teaching tools, audio-visual materials, manufacturing materials for understanding mathematical concepts. But sometimes we cannot define or explain correctly the concepts as well as the derivation of principles and laws by these materials. In order to solve the problem we can use the computer. In this paper, character and movement state of various quadratic function graph types can be used. Using the computers is more visible than other educational instruments like blackboards, O.H.Ps., etc. Then, students understand the mathematical concepts and the correct quadratic function graph correctly. Consquently more effective teaching-learning activity can be done. Usage of computers is the best method for improving the mathematical abilities because computers have functions of the immediate reaction, operation, reference and deduction. One of the important characters of mathematics is accuracy, so we use computers for improving mathematical abilities. This paper is about the program focused on the part of "the quadratic function graph", which exists in mathematical curriculum the middle school. When this program is used for students, it is expected the following educational effect. 1, Students will have positive thought by arousing interests of learning because this program is composed of pictures, animations with effectiveness of sound. 2. This program will cause students to form the mathematical concepts correctly. 3. By visualizing the process of drawing the quadratic function graph, students understand the quadratic function graph structually. 4. Through the feedback, the recognition ability of the trigonometric function can be improved. 5. It is possible to change the teacher-centered instruction into the student-centered instruction. For the purpose of increasing the efficiencies and qualities of mathmatics education, we have to seek the various learning-teaching methods. But considering that no computer can replace the teacher′s role, tearchers have to use the CIA program carefully.

In this study, we modified the surface of ground calcium carbonate (GCC) with polyelectrolytes with different molecular weight using Layer-by-Layer (LbL) multilayering technique and investigated its effect on the paper properties. Polydiallydimethylammonium chloride (poly-DADMAC) and poly sodium 4-styrene sulfonate (PSS) which have different molecular weights were used for LbL multilayering. Zeta potential and particle size of the LbL modified GCC were measured. After preparation of handsheets, their structural and mechanical properties were evaluated. The zeta potential and average particle size of the modified GCC were affected by the molecular weight of anionic polyelectrolyte (PSS). The zeta potential was higher and the particle size was smaller when GCC was treated by PSS with high molecular weight compared to the case with low molecular weight of PSS. The tensile and internal bond strength of the handsheets was increased with an increase in the number of layers on GCC particles, but the molecular weight of polyelectrolyte did not significantly affect the paper strength.

Even though we could not count the total amount of plates in Korean printing industry per year, we would suppose the total amount of plates about $20,000km^2$ to $22,000km^2$ per year through our printing experience. On the standard of the end of 2010, it would be the market share of plates are that CTP plate is $9,000km^2$, CTcP plate is$4,000km^2$ and PS plate is $9,000km^2$, such as total amount of plates are $22,000km^2$. When there was no installed CTP setter in Korea, the domestic plate would be over 60% market share of plate in Korean printing industry. But now it would be less than 25% market share of plate. It is necessary to develop domestic CTP thermal plate from now because we have to keep the market share of domestic plate. On the study of the surface structure of substrate, roughness, anodized layer amount and coating amount between domestic CTP thermal plate and foreign CTP thermal plate, it would be the basic to develop domestic CTP thermal plate.
The UV-B sensitivity was tested for the intertidal species Chondrus ocellatus from Korea, by measuring photosynthesis estimated as effective quantum yield ($\Phi_{PSII}$) of photosystem II (PS II), growth and content and composition of photosynthetic pigments and UV-absorbing pigments (UVAPs). The $$\Phi_{PSII}$ of the alga decreased with increasing time of exposure to UV-B radiation, followed by fast and nearly full recovery indicating dynamic photoinhibiton. Fresh weight-based growth and pigment contents of C. ocellatus were not seriously affected by UV-B radiation. A single broad peak at 327 nm was obtained from methanol extracts of C. ocellatus, and the absorbance peak increased with increasing UV. The single peak was resolved into three peaks (311, 330 and 336 nm) by the fourth -derivative, and quantitative change in response to UV-B radiation occurred only at 330 nm. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis of purified extracts indicated that three MAAs (mycosporine-like amino acids) are present, asterina 330, palythine and shinorine. Field observations during three growing months showed that C. ocellatus exhibit the highest amount of UVAPs in May followed by July and little trace in September, coinciding with the species' phenology. In an ecological context, dynamic photoinhibition as well as accumulation of UVAPs may enable the shallow water red alga C. ocellatus to be well adapted to high UV-B environments.
