In this paper, we present a new type of spherical robot having two arms. This robot, called KisBot, mechanically consists of three parts, a wheel-shaped body and two rotating semi-spheres. In side of each semi-sphere, there exists an arm which is designed based on slider-crank mechanism for space efficiency. KisBot has hybrid types of driving mode: rolling and wheeling. In the rolling mode, the robot folds its arms through inside of itself and uses them as pendulum, then the robot works like a pendulum-driven robot. In the wheeling mode, two arms are extended from inside of the robot and are contacted to the ground, then the robot works like a one-wheel car. The Robot arms can be used as a brake during rolling mode and add friction to the robot for climbing a slope during wheeling mode. We developed a remote controlled type robot for experiment. It contains two DC motors which are located in the center of each semi-sphere for main propulsion, two RC motors for each arm operation, speed controllers for each semi-sphere, batteries for main power source, and other mechanical components. Experiments for the rolling and wheeling mode verify the hybrid driving ability and efficiency of the our proposed spherical robot.

Knowledge about ice load distribution along the ship hull due to ship-ice interaction can provide important background information for the development of design codes for ice-going vessels. The objective of this study is to understand ship and ice interaction phenomena and determine the magnitude of ice load acting along a ship hull. The model tests were performed in the ice model basin in Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean engineering (KRISO) with the model of icebreaking ship Araon. Self-propulsion tests in level ice were performed with three difference model ship speeds. In the model tests, three tactile sensors were installed to measure the spatial distribution of ice load acting at different locations on a model ship, such as the bow and shoulder areas. Variation in the distribution of ice load acting on a model hull with ship speed is discussed.

The speed-power prediction is one of the most important functions of towing-tank facilities. Generally, ITTC-1978 extrapolation method is employed for the full-scale powering prediction. During the procedure, the friction resistance line plays a major role to predict both model- and full-scale resistance. In this paper, the form factors determined by ITTC-1957 line for several kinds of vessels are compared with the values obtained using the lines proposed by Grigson(1993) and Katsui et al.(2005). Resistance and self-propulsion coefficients predicted by three different friction resistance lines are minutely analyzed. Finally, brake powers and revolutions estimated by flat plate friction resistance lines of Grigson and Katsui et al. are compared with the results obtained from ITTC-1957 line.

At the initial stage of propulsion shaft design, in line with shaft alignment, an intensified consideration of lateral vibration is needed to verify its operational safety. Recently the alignment problem affecting the lateral vibration has been becoming issues. However, the theoretical method of forced lateral vibration analysis is not cleary established so far and it is about to simply limited among the classification societies and international standards to avoid the blade natural frequency resonance cpm outside of ${\pm}20%$ of engine rpm at MCR. On the other hand, longer center distance between each support bearing shows an affirmative result normally in shaft alignment analysis whereas the blade order resonance speed may cause lowering near the limitation in the aspect of lateral vibration. Therefore, it is required careful attention to engineers as described above. As a method to solve the problem, it is mainly considered that remove forward stern tube bearing. In this paper, based on a medium size container ship case, theoretical study was carried out in the context of the forward stern tube bearing. The various effects and functions of forward stern tube bearing are reviewed and evaluated. Then an guidance note to lead the conclusion is proposed.
This paper introduces the development process and investigation of a 60kW induction motor for electric vehicles. We present performance improvement in the induction motor of electric vehicle using copper die-casting based on a multi-gate process. Copper die-casting motors can reduce the size of the motor, the loss of the rotor, and material costs. We also introduce electromagnetic, thermal, mechanical design and analysis results that satisfy the design and the performance requirements. In order to analyze losses accurately of induction motor, commercial finite element analysis is done considering PWM voltage and thermal characteristics by using lumped-circuit parameters. Experimental tests are also carried out to validate the traction motor design.

Railway vehicles driven by wheels obtain force required for propulsion and braking by adhesive force between wheels and rails, this adhesive force is determined by multiplying adhesion coefficient of the friction surface by the applied axle load. Because the adhesion coefficient has a peak at certain slip velocity, it is important to determine the maximum values of the friction coefficient on the contact area. But this adhesive phenomenon is not clearly examined or analyzed. Thus we have developed new test procedure using the scaled adhesion test-bench for analyzing of the adhesion coefficient between wheel and rail. This adhesion test equipment is an experimental device that contacts mutually with twin disc which are equivalent to wheels and rails of railway vehicles.
This research was conducted for an acquisition of the ramjet engine test facility design technique which are concerned about freejet type test facility. In this research, we concentrated on the design technique and the construction technique of the vitiation air heater(VAH), test section, diffuser and ejector. Based on the operating modes of the basic test facility, ten operating modes in coordinates "Altitude-Mach number" was regenerated from Mach 2, Altitude 0km to Mach 5, Altitude 15km. In this operating modes, we calculated a design parameter of the supersonic nozzle, VAH, diffuser and ejector and acquired a technique for the ramjet test facility operating and repairing.

This study presents the nano-sized particle emission characteristics from a small turbocharged common rail diesel engine applicable to prime and auxiliary machines on marine vessels. The experiments were conducted under dynamic engine operating conditions, such as steady-state, cold start, and transient conditions. The particle number and size distributions were analyzed with a high resolution PM analyzer. The diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) had an insignificant effect on the reduction in particle number, but particle number emissions were drastically reduced by 3 to 4 orders of magnitude downstream of the diesel particulate filter (DPF) at various steady conditions. Under high speed and load conditions, the particle filtering efficiency was decreased by the partial combustion of trapped particles inside the DPF because of the high exhaust temperature caused by the increased particle number concentration. Retarded fuel injection timing and higher EGR rates led to increased particle number emissions. As the temperature inside the DPF increased from $25^{\circ}C$ to $300^{\circ}C$, the peak particle number level was reduced by 70% compared to cold start conditions. High levels of nucleation mode particle generation were found in the deceleration phases during the transient tests.

In this paper we propose a novel torque control method for permanent magnet synchronous motors using the SVPWM (Space Vector PWM). The control law is described in the rotating d-q frame and is devised to track a given reference flux with which the reference torque is generated. The key feature of the proposed control is that it provides uniform dynamics with desired closedloop poles independent of the rotating speed and the desired poles can be selected to yield a fast response with only a small amount of torque ripple.

Superconducting motor has a lot of benefits from high power density for ship propulsions, so a number of research project are in progress worldwide. Despite of all the benefits, there is always a difficulty of cryo-moving part for conventional air-core superconducting synchronous motors. In order to get rid of this moving cryogenic part, we propose a homopolar superconducting synchronous motor, which has high temperature superconducting armature and field coils. The rotor is supposed to be made of iron only and excited by the stationary HTS field coils. The stationary field coils make the cooling system simple and easy to realize because there is no cryo-moving part. A design result of a 10 hp homopolar synchronous motor is presented in this paper. The self and mutual inductance of the motor having the size of air gap as variable parameter are calculated by a 3-dimemsional finite element method. The value of design variables such as the dimension of a motor and the number of turns, etc. is decided by performing the coordinate transformation of the calculated inductance. The operating frequency is supposed to be below 5 Hz for low rotating speed which is needed for a purpose of ship propulsion. Low frequency also has the benefit of low AC losses.
