  • The Tank model and the PRMS(Precipitation Runoff Modeling-modular System) model have been adopted to simulate runoff data from 1981 to 2001 year in the Seomgin-dam basin. However, the simulated runoff by each single model showed some deviations compared with the observed runoff, respectively. In this study a genetic algorithm combination runoff model has been proposed to minimize deviations between simulated runoff and observed runoff that should yield from single model such as Tank model or PRMS model. The proposed combination runoff model combining the simulated respective output of the Tank model and the PRMS model is to produce the optimum combination ratio of each single model applying to the genetic algorithm which may yield the minimum deviations between simulated runoff and observed one. The proposed combination runoff model has been applied to the Seomgin-dam basin. It has also been shown that the combination model by introducing optimal combination ratio should yield less deviations than single model such as the Tank model or the PRMS model.

  • In this study, the PRMS(Precipitation and Runoff Modeling System), developed by USGS(United States Geological Survey), was applied to the Yongdam dam watershed in the Geum River basin. The efficiency for runoff simulation and spatial characteristics of PRMS were evaluated. The runoff changes with the changes of subcatchments and HRUs were estimated. As results, the size of the subcatchment and HRV did not significantly affect the runoff at the exit of watershed. Consequently, the spatial characteristic of PRMS was shown as lumped type rather than semi-distributed. The geographical input data for Yongdam dam watershed were converted to the USGS Input type, and the parameters were calibrated using Rosenbrock optimization method, validated with the observed runoff data. The PRMS showed resonable agreements in the long-term continuous runoff simulation, if the accuracy of observed data is ensured.

  • Poultry red mites (PRMs), Dermanyssus gallinae, are one of the most harmful ectoparasites of laying hens. Because of their public health impact, safe, effective methods to eradicate PRMs are greatly needed. Carbon dioxide (CO2) was shown to eradicate phytophagous mites; however, there is no evidence that PRMs can be eradicated by CO2. Thus, the efficacy of CO2, applied by direct-spraying and dry ice-generated exposure, for eradicating PRMs was investigated. Both treatments eradicated > 85% of PRMs within 24 h and 100% of PRMs by 120 h of post-treatment. Therefore, these novel approaches may be useful for eradicating PRMs in clinical settings.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the applicability of extracted PRMS input parameters by KGIS-Hydrology over Yongdam-Dam watershed. KGIS-Hydrology is a system for automatic extraction and analysis of watershed characteristic data. Input parameters of PRMS were generated from GIS data (DEM, soil, forest type, etc.) using KGIS-Hydrology. Multi-temporal meteorological data from Jangsu station of KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration) were used for all simulation periods. Input parameters of PRMS were optimized using observed runoff data of Yongdam-Dam station (1966-2001) and validated using observed runoff data of Yongdam-Dam station (2002-2006, Yongdam-Dam watershed). The results showed that the simulated flows were much closed to the observed flows of Yongdam-Dam (2002-2006) and Donghyang (2001-2004) station by 0.49~0.83 and 0.57~0.75 model efficiencies, respectively.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the applicability and simulation capability of PRMS, developed by U.S. Geological Survey, over the seven multi-purpose dam watersheds in Korea. The basic concepts of model components and their parameters are investigated for the evaluation of model applicability and the possibility of model parameter estimation is suggested based on the data availibility. For model parameter estimation, some parameters are directly estimated from measurable basin characteristics, but the others are estimated by Rosenbrock's automatic optimization scheme. The results show that the simulated flows from the model were very close to the observed ones. Although the default values for snowmelt model parameter are used, the results from snowmelt simulation is also acceptable. The model shows that the simulation capability is not sensitive to the basin size, however, according to increasing basin area, simulation characteristics are close to those for lumped model rather than semi-distributed model.

  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) have been regulated by the Air Pollution Control Act (1978) and their atmospheric concentrations have been monitored in 39 monitor sites in Korea. However, measurement standards of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in HAPs at ambient levels have not been established in Korea. Primary reference gas mixtures (measurement standards) at ambient levels are required for accurately monitoring atmospheric VOCs in HAPs and managing their emissions. In this study, primary reference gas mixtures (PRMs) at 5 nmol/mol were developed in order to establish primary national standards of VOCs in HAPs at ambient levels. Primary reference gas mixtures (PRMs) were prepared in pressurized aluminum cylinders with special internal surface treatment using gravimetric method. Analytical methods using gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID) coupled with a cryogenic preconcentrator were also developed to verify the consistency of gravimetrically prepared HAP VOCs PRMs. Three different columns installed in the GC-FID were evaluated and compared for the retention times and separation of eighteen target components in a chromatogram. Results show that the HAP VOCs PRMs at 5 nmol/mol were consistent within a relative expanded uncertainty (k=2) of less than 3 % except acrylonitrile (less than 6 %) and the 18 VOCs were stable for 1 year within their associated uncertainties.

  • Streamflow is composed of baseflow and direct runoff. However, most of streamflow during dry seasons depends on baseflow. Thus, baseflow analysis is very important to simulate streamflow of dry seasons. Generally, baseflow analysis is conducted using watershed-scale runoff models due to diffilculty of measuring baseflow. However, it is needed to understand and review how the model simulates baseflow because each model uses inherent baseflow analysis techniques. In this study, SWAT, HSPF, PRMS-IV were reviewed focusing on baseflow and soil water. HSPF and PRMS-IV calculate baseflow using the variables which depends on user, so the baseflow analysis results of HSPF and PRMS-IV are not consistent. Moreover, soil structures which were assumed from HSPF and PRMS-IV, since these two models assume soil structure as two soil zones and three conceptual reservoirs, were not enough to describe real soil structure. On the other hand, baseflow in SWAT is calculated using baseflow recession constant which can consider the characteristics of aquifer and also, soil structure in SWAT is similar to real soil structures. Thus, baseflow analysis result from SWAT was concluded as the most suitable and reliable model because SWAT can reflect the characteristics and soil structure which is close to reality.

  • The objective of this study is to generate the regional scale runoff scenarios by using IPCC SRES A2 climate change scenario for analyzing the spatial variation of water resources in Korea. The PRMS model was adopted to simulate long-term stream discharge. To estimate the PRMS model parameters on each sub-basin, the streamflow data at 6 dam sites and Rosenbrock's scheme are used for model parameter calibration and those parameters are translated to ungauged catchments by regionalization method. The other 3 dam sites are selected for the verification of the adequateness of regionalized model parameters in ungagued catchments. The statistical results show that the simulated flows by using regionalized parameters well agree with observed ones. The generated runoff scenarios by climate change are compared with observed data on 4 dam sites for the reference period. The consequences show that the selection of climate station for generating climate scenario affects the reliability of climate scenario at sub-basin. The comparison results of the stream flows between the 30-year baseline period (1971-2000) and future 90-year (2001-2030, 2031-2060, 2061-2090) show that the long-term mean annual runoff in the Han River has increasing trend, while the Nakdong, the Gum, the Youngsan and the Sumjin Rivers have decreasing trend.
