  • This paper is concerned with the dynamic modeling and controller design for a cylindrical shell equipped with MFC actuators. The dynamic model was derived by using Ravleigh-Ritz method based on Donnel-Mushtari shell theory. The boundary conditions at both ends were assumed to be shear diaphragm. To verify the theoretical results, a cylindrical shell structure made of aluminum was built ana tested by using impact hammer. Experimental results show that there are little discrepancies compared to theoretical results because of the boundary conditions at both ends. The MFC actuators were glued to the cylindrical shell in longitudinal and circumferential directions. The PPF controller were designed for lowest two modes and applied to the MFC actuators. The experimental results show that vibrations can be successfully suppressed.

  • To produce uniform seedlings of tomato and cucumber with inexpensive way, their seedling quality by different light sources was investigated. The raising of seedling was performed by red LED (light emitting diodes), blue LED, red-blue mixed LED or fluorescent light with a fixed PPF(photosynthetic proton flux) level, about $40{\sim}60{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}sec^{-1}$. In the both tomato and cucumber, the rapid extension of hypocotyledonary axis was observed in Blue LED than fluorescent light, but opposite result was found in Red and mixed LED. During the nursery period of tomato and cucumber, the fresh weight was the highest in Red LED as 74% increasement in tomato and 74% in cucumber. In the case of seedling quality after the tomato nursery, there was no difference in the positions of 1st flower cluster and the number of bearing-flower per flower cluster by each light source. In case of cucumber, until 20th node, the setting ratio of female flower was higher in LED than fluorescent treatment, and also more healthy fruit setting was found in LED. Therefore, we assume that the Red or mixed (Red 2 + Blue 1) LED is more favorable to produce high quality tomato and cucumber seedlings in closed nursery facility.

  • Prunus persica Flos (PPF) were investigated for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities to find a natural functional food resource preventing degenerative diseases associated with excessive oxidative stress and chronic inflammation. PPF was extracted using ethanol (EtOH) and then sequentially fractioned by hexane (Hx), dichloromethane (DM), ethyl acetate (EA), n-butanol (BtOH), and water (DW). Contents of total phenolics and flavonoids, as well as 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging activities were measured. Anti-inflammatory effects in terms of nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandin (PG) E2, and pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-6 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-${\alpha}$ production were also measured using LPS-treated RAW 264.7 macrophages. EtOH extract showed relatively high antioxidant activity with high total phenolic (78.1 mg tannic acid/g) and flavonoid contents (55.3 mg rutin/g). EA fraction contained the highest total phenolic and flavonoid contents (394.6 mg tannic acid/g, 253.7 mg rutin/g), followed by BtOH (128.3 mg tannic acid/g, 93.1 mg rutin/g). EA and BtOH fractions and EtOH extract showed higher DPPH radical and ABTS radical scavenging activities than the others (P<0.05). In LPS-treated RAW 264.7 macrophages, EtOH extract ($200{\mu}g/mL$) showed significantly reduced (P<0.05) NO, PGE2, and TNF-${\alpha}$ production levels to 38.5%, 32.3%, and 48.9% of the control, respectively, as well as reduced iNOS and COX-2 protein expression. DM fraction ($50{\mu}g/mL$) showed significantly reduced (P<0.05) NO, PGE2, IL-6, and TNF-${\alpha}$ production levels to 43.5%, 13.3%, 38.7%, and 41.3% of the control, respectively, and EA fraction ($50{\mu}g/mL$) showed significantly reduced NO, PGE2, IL-6, and TNF-${\alpha}$ production levels to 44.8%, 22.4%, 45.7%, and 62.0% of the control, respectively. Taken together, EtOH extract of PPF showed potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, and EA and BtOH fractions showed comparatively stronger antioxidant activities while DM and EA fractions showed stronger anti-inflammatory activities. It can be concluded that EtOH extract of PPF and its fractions are good candidates as natural resources for the development of anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory functional food products.

  • Small rod-controlled pressurized water reactors (PWR) are the ideal energy source for vessel propulsion, benefiting from their high reactivity control efficiency. Since the control rods (CRs) increase the complexity of reactivity control, this paper seeks to study the performance of CRs in small rod-controlled PWRs to extend the lifetime and reduce power offset due to CRs. This study investigates CR grouping, move-in/out strategies, and axially non-uniform design effects on core neutron physics metrics. These metrics include axial offset (AO), core lifetime (CL), fuel utilization (FU), and radial power peaking factor (R-PPF). To simulate the movement of the CRs, a "Critical-CR-burnup" function was developed in OpenMC. In CR designs, the CRs are grouped into three banks to study the simultaneous and prioritized move-in/out strategies. The results show CL extension from 590 effective full power days (EFPDs) to 638-698 EFPDs. A lower-worth prioritized strategy minimizes AO and the extremum values decrease from -0.69 and + 0.81 to -0.28 and + 0.51. Although an axially non-uniform CR design can improve AO at the beginning of cycle (BOC), considering the overall CR worth change is crucial, as a significant decrease can adversely impact axial power distribution during the middle of cycle (MOC).

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of light intensity and electrical conductivity (EC) of nutrient solution during short day treatment in an ebb and flow systems on the growth and nutrient uptake of potted Kalanchoe blossfeldiana 'Rako' and the nutrient accumulation of growing medium. Nutrient concentrations in the growing medium were also analyzed to investigate the accumulation rates of macro-nutrients such as T-N, P, K, Ca, and Mg, respectively. To achieve the objectives, plants were fed with a nutrient solution with 1.2, 1.8, or $2.4dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ under three daily photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) of 4.26, 5.51, or $9.75mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}d^{-1}$. Both light intensity and EC of nutrient solution significantly influenced the crop growth. The elevation of PPFs resulted in the increase of plant growth. For each light condition, plant growth, such as dry and fresh weight and leaf area, was the highest when the electrical conductivity of nutrient solution was controlled to $2.4dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. However, growth was acceptable in the EC ranges from 1.8 to $2.4dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. Both light intensity and EC of nutrient solution significantly influenced the uptake of nutrients in the solution tanks and the accumulation of nutrients in the growing medium. As the EC of nutrient solution was elevated, the absorption rates of $NO_3^-$, $PO_4^{-3}$, $K^+$, and $Mg^{2+}$ by crops and accumulation of those in growing medium increased, but the light intensity did not significantly influence the absorption rates. Based on the above results, the regression models were suggested for anticipating the macro-nutrient accumulations in growing medium.

  • Gross photosynthetic rats of leaves of hydroponically grown cucumber plants(Cucumis sativus L. cv. Guwoosalichungjang) were measured under various conditions of photosynthetic photon flux(PPF), ambient $CO_2$ concentration, air temperature and leaf nitrogen contents. Light compensation point of leaf photosynthesis appeared to be in the range of 10~20$\mu$mol.m$^{-2}$ .s$^{-1}$ and light saturation point be above 1000$\mu$mol.m$^{-2}$ .s$^{-1}$ . Gross photosynthetic rates increased persistently and asymptotically as air temperature rose from 12$^{\circ}C$ to 32$^{\circ}C$. However, there were only small differences in gross photosynthetic rates in the range of 24-32$^{\circ}C$, so that the range seemed to be optimal for photosynthesis of cucumber plants at the condition of $CO_2$ concentration of 400$\mu$mol.mol$^{-1}$ and PPF of around 400$\mu$mol.m$^{-2}$ .s$^{-1}$ . $CO_2$ compensation point of leaf photosynthesis appeared to be in the range of 20-40$\mu$mol.mol$^{-1}$ and $CO_2$ saturation point be above 1200$\mu$mol.mol$^{-1}$ . Gross photosynthetic rates increased sigmoidally as leaf nitrogen content increased. These environmental factors interacted synergistically to enhance gross photosynthetic rate, so that the rate increased multiplicatively s level of one factor increased progressively with higher levels of he other factors. Mathematical models wer developed to estimate the gross photosynthetic rate in accordance with the variations of these environmental factors. These modes can be used not only to explain he variation of growth or yield of cucumber plants under different environmental conditions but also as building blocks of plant growth model or expert system of cucumber plants.

  • The study was conducted to estimate stimulation of plant growth of blue and red leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) as affected by covering methods with vinyl materials containing concentrated PO film. Plants were grown in direct, direct and tunnel, and tunnel covering with 'Pasraido materials' from October 13 to 31. With the covering mean air temperature, soil temperature, leaf temperature and relative humidity remarkedly increased. Higher temperature was observed in the order of direct and tunnel, direct, tunnel covering and the control. Photosynthetic photon flux (PPF, $\mu$mol m$^{-2}$ . s$^{-1}$ ) was observed in reverse order of temperature. Concentration of $CO_2$ was higher during night than during day under the light. Accumulation of highest $CO_2$ at night was obtained from direct coverings followed by direct and tunnel, tunnel covering and the control. Plant height, leaf number and leaf area of blue and red lettuces were stimulated by direct covering. However, there was no significant difference.

  • Lastly, neuromorphic computing chip has been extensively studied as the technology that directly mimics efficient calculation algorithm of human brain, enabling a next-generation intelligent hardware system with high speed and low power consumption. Three-terminal based synaptic transistor has relatively low integration density compared to the two-terminal type memristor, while its power consumption can be realized as being so low and its spike plasticity from synapse can be reliably implemented. Also, the strong electrical interaction between two or more synaptic spikes offers the advantage of more precise control of synaptic weights. In this review paper, the results of synaptic transistor mimicking synaptic behavior of the brain are classified according to the channel material, in order of silicon, organic semiconductor, oxide semiconductor, 1D CNT(carbon nanotube) and 2D van der Waals atomic layer present. At the same time, key technologies related to dielectrics and electrolytes introduced to express hysteresis and plasticity are discussed. In addition, we compared the essential electrical characteristics (EPSC, IPSC, PPF, STM, LTM, and STDP) required to implement synaptic transistors in common and the power consumption required for unit synapse operation. Generally, synaptic devices should be integrated with other peripheral circuits such as neurons. Demonstration of this neuromorphic system level needs the linearity of synapse resistance change, the symmetry between potentiation and depression, and multi-level resistance states. Finally, in order to be used as a practical neuromorphic applications, the long-term stability and reliability of the synapse device have to be essentially secured through the retention and the endurance cycling test related to the long-term memory characteristics.
