  • In this study, formaldehyde concentrations in two exhibition halls were monitored using a passive sampler from May 2012 to April 2013. Formaldehyde concentrations in the exhibition halls were 5 to 36 times higher than concentrations outdoors. Concentrations inside the exhibition room and showcase varied according to pollutant source, HVAC(heating, ventilation, air conditioning)system and environment management. The formaldehyde concentration levels were corrected according to a standard method prescribed by Indoor Air Quality Management Law of the Ministry of Environment, Korea. As a result, Most concentration levels exceeded the exhibition standard of the Ministry of Environment($100{\mu}g/m^3$) and artifacts conservation standard of Tokyo National Museum($50{\mu}g/m^3$). Seasonal concentrations in the exhibition room and showcase were in the order summer>fall>spring>winter. Formaldehyde emissions increased in summer when air temperature and relative humidity are both high. Formaldehyde concentration distribution according to the temperature and relative humidity showed positive correlation. Air temperature showed good correlation because $R^2$ was in the range of 0.8~0.9. Analysis of formaldehyde emission characteristics in the exhibition hall would be helpful in efforts to improve indoor air quality.

  • This study is to find out the distribution characteristic of Octopus minor in the Tando Bay on the southwest coast of Korea with conducting surveys from May of 2006 to April of 2007. Surveys were carried out at 20 stations on 2 and 3 tide time in the low speed of high tide at night and conducted during 30minutes (4 times fishing) per station. Catch per unit effort (CPUE) was estimated by total catch per 500hooks at each station. Monthly CPUE showed that they put highest in October, November, April and June at 10.4, 10.5, 9.4 and 7.7 individuals respectively. On the other hand, CPUE put lowest in January, the coldest month, and August, the hottest month, at 0.2 and 0.3 individuals respectively. As for geographical mantle length distribution, average mantle length ranged from 6.2cm to 7.3cm at stations near the tidal channels (St. 1, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 13, 14, 15, 18, 19 and 20), and was smaller than 6.0cm at stations located inside of bay (St. 2, 3, 7, 11, 12 and 17). In terms of geographical distribution density, CPUE showed higher than 8.0 at St.4 in Changmaeri, St.8 in Taecheonri, St.13 near Seondo, St.18 in Naeri and St.14 in western part of Tando which are located near the main tidal channels. And distribution density showed low that CPUE was lower than 5.0 individuals at stations located inside of bay (St. 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 11, 12, 16 and 20). Through the results, the difference of distribution density reflects that distribution of Octopus minor is affected by direction of current and inflow of pollutant from land in direct. Therefore, it is considered that bottom composition of tidal flat and distribution of live food are the crucial cause of identifying the distribution characteristics of Octopus minor. For this reason, it is judged to need additional research on it.

  • The contents were investigated by the monitoring survey from the soils and tailings caused by numerous abandoned mines in Korea. Cause heavy metals due to abandoned metal mines are raising significant environmental problems. But it is an important key such as a leaching and a transfer mechanism to evaluate contamination levels caused by abandoned mines. In this study the column test was carried in order to calculate a leaching level from soils and tailings. It was demonstrated that the leaching of Pb, Cd and Mn was expressed with similar behaviors and that of As and Cu was expressed with similar behaviors. For Zn, the leaching behavior was shown a serious leaching level with 40 mg/kg during the 45days. This was explained by Zn high contents of soils Zn in a natural world and ORP conditions where the leaching of Zn was occurred easily. Hence it was necessary that the survey of ORP was a key as well as total contents for the management of abandoned metal mines. We could estimate the chemical forms of heavy metals using the physical index such as ORP and pH and reduce the risk from heavy metals caused by abandoned metal mines.

  • Juam lake is a major water resource for the industrial and agricultural activities as well as the resident life of Kwangju and Chonnam regions. However, the water quality of the lake is getting worse due to a large quantity of pollutant inflowing to the lake. Thus, the strategy for achieving the water quality goal of the lake should be developed as soon as possible. When there are various alternatives that can be used as the strategy, several criteria based on the achievement degree of water quality goal, the applicability of technique and social environment, and the reasonableness of the cost required are made to evaluate and rank the alternatives. However, it is difficult to make a decision when there are multiple criteria and conflicting objectives and specifically the estimated values of criteria contain elements of uncertainty. The uncertainty stems from the lack of available information, the randomness of future situation, and the incomplete knowledge of expert. As the degree of uncertainty is higher, the decision becomes more difficult. In this study, a fuzzy decision-making method is presented to assist decision makers in evaluating various alternatives under uncertainty. The method allows decision makers to characterize the associated uncertainty by applying fuzzy theory and incorporate the uncertainty directly into the decision making process for selecting the "best" alternative so decisions can be made that are more appropriate and realistic than those made without taking uncertainty in account.

  • Feasibility of floating aquatic plants (Eichhornia crassipes and Water dropwort) was investigated in order to control of sewage depending on various initial loading in a lab scale test. In addition, field test was conducted to assess the uptake rate of nutrient by E. crassipes. Lab-scale test applying primary domestic effluent operated at 4 day HRT shows that the highest uptake rates were 1.06 g N/$m^2{\cdot}day$ and 0.39 g P/$m^2{\cdot}day$ in the E. crassipes reactor. BOD removal efficiency in E. crassipes reactor was as high as 80% when the loading value was lower than 185 kg BOD/$ha{\cdot}day$. While 70 ~ 80% removal efficiency of BOD was achieved when the loading value was lower 80 kg BOD/$ha{\cdot}day$ at the W. Dropwort reactor. Experiment results show that E.crassipes has a higher nutrients removal efficiency than W. dropwort under high pollutant loading. Input loadings of TN and TP should not exceed to 10 kg TN/$ha{\cdot}day$ and 2.0 kg TP/$ha{\cdot}day$ respectively to provide a 50% TN and 80% TP removal efficiencies using E. crassipes. The field test demonstrated that an annual yield of E. crassipes mass was estimated as a fresh weight of 30.9 $m^3/ha{\cdot}yr$. E. crassipes grown in field pads absorbed 76.7 kg N/$ha{\cdot}yr$ and 13.4 kg P/$ha{\cdot}yr$ as a dry weight.

  • The TMDL, the watershed-oriented water quality management policy, was introduced to inhibit the total amount of pollutant loading generation, and to develop the region environmentally friendly. However, despite the implementation of TMDL, the water quality of Nam river downstream has worsened continuously since 2005. Diverse pollution sources such as cities and industrial zone are scattered around the Nam river. Eutrophication are caused due to deterioration of water quality by low velocity. BOD concentrations in the eutrophic waters affected by the incoming BOD and the autochthonous BOD by the production of phytoplankton. In this study, the quantitative relation of incoming BOD and autochthonous BOD was analyzed for water quality management. The influence of autochthonous BOD was analyzed using QUALKO2 and QUAL2E. Considering the effects of Chl.a, BOD concentration from QUALKO2 model simulations is higher than BOD concentration from QUAL2E model. The results of QUALKO2 showed higher correlation with the measured data. Autochthonous BOD needs to be managed to solve the water pollution problem of Nam river downstream, which is looking for ways to reduce Chl.a by using the increase of the dam outflow and the improvement of the water quality from WWTP.

  • Various input data required for water quality modeling have considerable impacts on modeling results and relevant analysis due to the absence of data standardization and lack of data accuracy. With this in mind, this study mainly focused on the designing Korean Reach File for more effective water quality modeling through the supply of database composed with accurate hydraulic and hydrologic data. The Korean Reach File is the hydraulic database with the locational information of individual reaches, and each reach represents the stream reach of homogeneous hydraulic characteristics. In detail, it has reach code designating each stream reach, and topological information including catalog unit, segment, marker and index. It was also designed considering linkage of existing codes such as stream name and stream code. The devised reach code was implemented to Kyungan River at the City of Gwangju of Kyunggi Province and the results showed that the reach code could effectively support the input database integrating basic numerous data required for water quality modeling based on a criterion as well as easier linkage and utilization with existing database. In addition, more systematic water quality management was enabled through the linkage of existing data such as treatment facilities, pollutant data, and management institutes using the reach codes defined for each stream section. In the future, more efforts need to be made to adopt the reach code as the national standard data thereby enabling utilization of numerous relevant database through the assigning of reach code to individual stream reaches nationwide.

  • The fine dust generated in the home and restaurant business occupies a low ratio of about 4% of the total fine dust emissions. However, at the foodservice business, the rate of change of the pollutant concentration is very high, so that the temporary fine dust concentration can be measured up to 60 times. The pollutants generated from non-industrial combustion plants consist of particulate fine dust and gaseous organic compounds. To remove these pollutants, cleaning dust collection system, which is an effective system for simultaneous removal of gaseous and particulate matter, is applied. This is a method of increasing the probability of diffusion capture of the Brownian motion by pressurized liquid injection method using the atomizing nozzle. The dust removal efficiency of the fine dust collecting system was analyzed by nozzle spraying air pressure condition and angle using the manufactured fine dust removing system. As a result, it was confirmed that the efficiency of removal of fine dust and gaseous organic compounds was more than 90%. The developed system is expected to be highly usable in the future because it can remove particulate dust from the existing plant hood system without any installation cost.

  • Recently, Low impact development techniques, a form of nature-based solutions (NBS), were seen cost-efficient alternatives that can be utilized as alternatives for conventional stormwater management practices. This study evaluated the effectiveness of an infiltration trench (IT) and a small constructed wetland (SCW) in treating urban stormwater runoff. Long-term monitoring data were observed to assess the seasonal performance and cite the advantages and disadvantages of utilizing the facilities. Analyses revealed that the IT has reduced performance during the summer season due to higher runoff volumes that exceeded the facility's storage volume capacity and caused the facility to overflow. On the other hand, the pollutant removal efficiency of the SCW was impacted by the winter season as a result of dormant biological activities. Sediment data also indicated that fine and medium sand particles mostly constituted the trapped sediments in the pretreatment and media zones. Sediments in SCW exhibited a lower COD and TN load due to the phytoremediation and microbiological degradation capabilities of the system. This study presented brief comparison LID facilities equipped with pre-treatment zones. The identified factors that can potentially affect the performance of the systems were also beneficial in establishing metrics on the utilization of similar types of nature-based stormwater management practices.
