In this paper, all the materials constants of the PMN-32%PT single crystals grown by the solid state crystal growth method were measured by the resonance method. PMN-PT crystals of tetragonal symmetry have six elastic constants, three piezoelectric constants and two dielectric constants for their independent material constants. These materials constants were extracted from six sets of crystal samples of each different geometry to have different vibration modes respectively. Measured results showed that the crystal has larger electromechanical coupling factor k/sub 33/ (∼86%) and piezoelectric constant d/sub 33/ (∼1200pC/N) than conventional piezoceramics. Validity of the measurement was confirmed through comparison of the results with the impedance spectrum from finite element analysis of the samples and the results measured with a commercial do meter.
Magnetoelectric(ME) laminate composites of $Pb(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3-PbTiO_3 (PMN-PT)$ and Terfenol-D were prepared by sandwiching single crystals of PMN-PT between Terfenol-D disks. The magnetoelectric voltage coefficient (dE/dH) of the composite was determined to be 10.30 V/cm${\cdot}$Oe, at 1 kHz and under a dc magnetic bias of 0.4 T. The value of dE/dH is ∼80 times higher than either that of naturally occurring magnetoelectrics or artificially-grown magnetoelectric composites. This superior magnetoelectric voltage coefficient is attributed to the high piezoelectric voltage constant as well as the high elastic compliance of PMN-PT single crystal and the large magnetostrictive response of Terfenol-D.

Piezoelectric single crystals in the ternary MPB PMN-PZ-PT system with high $T_cs$ ($T_c$ > $200\sim300^{\circ}C$) and $E_cs$($E_c$>5~10 kV/cm) were fabricated by the cost-effective solid-state crystal growth (SSCG) technique. Chemically uniform PMN-PZT single crystals were successfully grown up to 60 mm by the SSCG method and their dielectric and piezoelectric properties characterized. Compared to Bridgman PMN-PT single crystals, the high $T_c/E_c$ PMN-PZT single crystals were found to exhibit a much wider usage range with respect to electric field as well as temperature, and thus become best candidates for medical transducers, actuators, and naval applications.

The preparation of 0.9PMN-0.1PT ceramics by the metal alkoxide method and the effect of excess $Mg(OC_2H_5)_2$, $Pb(CH_3COO)_2{\cdot}3H_2O$ are reported. The excess$ Mg(OC_2H5)_2$ addition signficantly affects the rate of perovskite phase formation in 0.9PMN-0.1PT ceramics. The sample by addition of 5 wt% excess $Mg(OC_2H5)_2$ sintered at $1150^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr obtained perovskite single phase and showed 98% of the theoretical density. The dielectric constant of the pellets sintered at $1150^{\circ}C$ was increased by the addition of 5 wt% excess $Mg(OC_2H_5)_2$ and had a maximum value of 15000 at 1 kHz.

Multilayered actuators using Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O3-PbTiO3 (PMN-PIN-PT) crystals have demonstrated excellent properties, but are costly and lack mechanical strength. Textured PMN-PIN-PT ceramics exhibit robust mechanical strength and comparable properties to their single crystals form. However, the development of multilayered actuators using textured PMN-PIN-PT ceramics has not been achieved until now. This study presents the development of a multilayered actuator using textured 0.37PMN-0.29PIN-0.34PT ceramics with an Ag0.9/Pd0.1 inner electrode, co-fired at 950℃. A random 0.37PMN-0.29PIN-0.34PT ceramics multilayered actuator was also developed for comparison. The multilayered actuator consisted of 9 ceramic layers (36 ㎛ thickness) with an overall actuator thickness of 0.401 mm. The textured and random 0.37PMN-0.29PIN-0.34PT ceramics-based multilayered actuators achieved displacements of 0.61 ㎛ (0.15% strain) and 0.23 ㎛ (0.057% strain) at a low applied peak voltage of 100 V. These results suggest that the developed multilayered actuator using high-performance textured 0.37PMN-0.29PIN-0.34PT ceramics has the potential to replace expensive single crystal-based actuators cost-effectively.

In this paper, a underwater acoustic Tonpilz transducer with the piezoelectric single crystal(72PMN-28PT) is developed. The thickness and the number of piezoelectric elements are theoretically designed with the equivalent circuit analysis to have the desired resonance frequency. In order to compare the performances, a piezoelectric ceramic transducer is also manufactured and their electrical impedance, TVR (transmitting voltage response), RVS (receiving voltage response) and beam pattern are compared.

Ni thin film on the PMN-PT crystal wafer were deposited by using E-beam evaporator technique. Deposited film was patterned by UV-lithography and etching and was in-diffused at 300~600C. Diffusion profile of Ni ions in PMN-PT was measured by secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS).

Dielectric and piezoelectric properties of PIN-PMN-PT piezoelectric single crystals with variation of temperature and compressive stress were investigated. The crystal phase of the single crystal was changed from the ferroelectric rhombohedral structure to tetragonal structure in the 110℃ region and from the tetragonal structure to the paraelectric cubic structure in the 190℃ region. The piezoelectric constant and relative dielectric constant were calculated from the rate of change of polarization and displacement with the application of electric field, which was similar to the value measured from the instrument. As the compressive stress applied to the sample increased, the piezoelectric constant d33 and relative dielectric constant values tended to increase. When the compressive stress applied to the sample at 5℃ was 60 MPa, the d33 was calculated as 4,500 pC/N. At 60℃, the relative dielectric constant of 62000 was calculated when the compressive stress applied to the sample was 40 MPa. The increase in piezoelectric constant and relative dielectric constant when the compressive stress increased could be attributed to the phase transition from the rhombohedral structure to orthorhombic.

In this research, modeling and analysis of an ultrasonic transducer composed of single crystal piezoelectric material(PMN-28PT) are conducted with FEM in reference with that composed of piezoelectric ceramic(PZT-4). Acoustic performances of the ultrasonic transducer are compared with magnitude, phase of impedance and trasmitting voltage response according to the type of piezoelectric materials.
Typical hydrophones in line array sensors for early detection of covert underwater targets can measure only sound-pressure-magnitude with the limitation of being unable to identify the direction of an incoming wave. In this study, a thickness shear mode vibrator was proposed as the main component of an inertia type vector hydrophone to measure both magnitude and direction of acoustic signals from targets. The equation to analyze the output voltage of the vibrator to an external force was derived, and the validity of the equation was verified through finite element analysis of a PMN-PT single crystal vibrator. The analysis results from this study will be utilized in the future for the design of inertia type vector hydrophones made of thickness shear vibrators.
