Linear Electric Motors in Machining Processes

  • Application of linear electric motors to automation of manufacturing processes, gantry robots, machining processes, machining centers, additive manufacturing and laser scribing has been discussed. The paper focuses on replacement of ball lead screw mechanisms with linear electric motors, linear motor driven positioning stages, linear motor driven gantries, machining centers, machining of large objects and industrial lasers. The best linear electric motors for application to machining processes are permanent magnet (PM) linear synchronous motors (LSMs), especially those without PMs in the reaction tail, e.g., high thrust density linear (HDL) LSMs and PM flux switching (FS) LSMs.

  • An adaptive current control scheme of a permanent magnet (PM) synchronous motor with the simultaneous estimation of the magnitude of the flux linkage and stator resistance is proposed. The adaptive parameter estimation is achieved by a model reference adaptive system (MRAS) technique. The adaptive laws are derived by the Popov's hyperstability theory and the positivity concept. The predictive control scheme is employed for the current controller with the estimated parameters. The robustness of the proposed current control scheme is compared with the conventional one through the computer simulations.

  • The development of modern high-energy magnet materials has allowed the replacement of field coils in many different types of electromagnetic energy conversion machines. As well, the linear synchronous motor has recently been proposed for linear motion with high efficiency and thrust. Thus, this paper presents an analytical solution for the high thrust and cost reduction of the Iron-Cored Permanent Magnet Linear Synchronous Motor (PMLSM) considering magnetization arrays and geometry. Hence, the superior utilization points in each of the magnetization arrays are provided by the height ratio of the magnet/air-gap and magnet/winding coil, etc. In formulation, the space harmonic method in analytical solutions and the generalized 2-D tensor finite element analysis can be used to evaluate force components in magneto static devices including the magnetostrictive phenomenon.

  • This paper presents the implementation of a positon sensorless vector control system of a PM linear synchronous motor by sliding mode observer based on TMS320F240 DSP controller. Sliding mode observer estimates the secondary velocity and position based on the measurement of current, and it shows very robust characteristic to parameter variation. Therefore, it improves the system performance deterioration caused by system parameter variations. Simulation and experimental considerations are presented to confirm the applicability of sliding mode observer to the sensorless position control of PMLSM.

  • This paper presents drive analysis of slotless air-cored PM linear synchronous motor using two-dimensional analytical method. In order to analyze dynamic characteristic, back-EMF and linkage flux are calculated by Permanent Magnet Field and also inductance are given by slotless winding coil. PMLSM drive simulation is performed by PI control system.

  • In this paper, we propose a new method which estimates the initial position of a PM synchronous motor (PMSM) using an incremental ecoder. in cremental encoders are widely used in detecting rotor position since they are inexpensive. At starting procedure, however, the incremental encoders cannot give the information of the absolute rotor position. Hence, additional absolue encoder, which has $60^{\circ}C$ resolutio electrically, and signal lines called U, V, W, have been used in practical systems for starting injection of a high frequency test current. It does not require any additional information such as U, V, W signals for starting procedure and allows for cheap and simple implementation. Experimental results show that the proposed method can estimate the initial rotor positon with higher accuracy than the conventional method using U, V, W signals.

  • This paper presents design of speed control system for slot less air-cored PM linear synchronous motor using space vector PWM. The vector control requires information about rotor position. And we can need to the Hall sensor for sampling current. In order to agree with this purpose, Digital Signal Processor(TMS320F2406A) developed for implementation of a speed Field Oriented Control.
