A study on measurement of particulate matter, nitrogen oxide and carbon oxide from main engine in training ship

  • In this study, we have carried out measurement for exhaust emissions such as particulate matter (PM), nitrogen oxide and carbon oxide from main engines installed on the training ships, HANBADA and HANNARA, of Korea Maritime University. In particular, we considered the two conditions; at arrivals/departures and at constant speed of about 160 rpm. The result showed that the concentration of PM at the ship arrival was 2.41mg/m3. On the other hand, when the ship is on the navigation condition, the concentration of PM was 1.34 mg/m3. The concentrations of nitrogen oxide and carbon oxide were measured in the range of 1,120~1,600 ppm and 320~1,450 ppm at the arrival and departure at the port. Under constant speed condition, the concentrations of nitrogen oxide and carbon oxide were 913~1,470 ppm and 73~460 ppm, respectively. Generally, the concentrations of exhaust emissions under the arrivals and departures were higher than that of constant speed condition. These results imply that the ship operation skill to prevent a sudden load change of main engine is needed during the arrival or departure. In addition, it means that the difference of exhaust emissions according to navigation conditions has to be considered when the reduction technologies of air pollutants from ships are developed.

  • The emission of particulate matter from marine diesel engines is already restricted by regional regulations in some countries, and IMO has been preparing the regulation for particulate matter from 53rd MEPC. But confusingly, the gravimetric PM measurement methods and procedures are not established clearly yet. On the other hand, smoke measurement method is set clearly, and it can also indicate PM, though it is not direct gravimetric method. As the preparing step for regulations about PM, we measured the smote density of exhaust emission from the marine four-stroke diesel engines operated in constant speed and various load steps on the test-bed, using the filter-type smoke measuring instrument. As a result, we understood the omission characteristics of smoke from the engines. Additionally, to obtain the objective reliability of our measurement data, we carried out experimental studies about various measuring parameters that could affect the smoke density.

  • The diesel engine exhaust gas is know as one of the causes to produce photochemical smog, which causes damage on environmental. However, due to the high thermal efficiency and low carbon dioxide emission, the usage of a diesel engine is prevailed. In this study, the DC non-thermal plasma technology used to the particulate matter (PM) aftertreatment. The exhaust gas characteristics and energy density were investigated on the dynamometer test bed and chassis dynamometer with CVS-75 mode in a passenger diesel car. It was reported that the smoke removal efficiency has around the 70% in the dynamometer test with 80W energy consumption and the PM removal efficiency has the 68% in the real car test. The NOx also reduced the 20% according to electrode type respectively. Considering these results, plasma technology is one of the ways to simultaneously removing method the particulate matter (PM) and NOx.

승용디젤엔진의 과도구간 입자상물질 저감 및 운전성능 향상을 위한 연료분사량 및 커먼레일압력 제어전략 (A Control Strategy of Fuel Injection Quantity and Common-rail Pressure to Reduce Particulate Matter Emissions in a Transient State of Diesel Engines)

  • This study proposes a control strategy of the common rail pressure with a fuel injection limitation algorithm to reduce particulate matter (PM) emissions under transient states. The proposed control strategy consists of two parts: injection quantity limitation and rail pressure adaptation. The injection limitation algorithm determines the maximum allowable fuel injection quantity to avoid rich combustion under transient states. The fuel injection quantity is limited by predicting the burned gas rate after combustion; however, the reduced injection quantity leads to deterioration of engine torque. The common rail pressure adaptation strategy is designed to compensate for the reduced engine torque. An increase of the rail pressure under transient states contributes to enhancement of the engine torque as well as reduction of PM emissions by promoting atomization of the injected fuel. The proposed control strategy is validated through engine experiments. The rail pressure adaptation reduced the PM emission by 5-10% and enhanced the engine torque up to 2.5%.

Human Pluripotent Stem Cell-Derived Alveolar Epithelial Cells as a Tool to Assess Cytotoxicity of Particulate Matter and Cigarette Smoke Extract

  • Human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) can give rise to a vast array of differentiated derivatives, which have gained great attention in the field of in vitro toxicity evaluation. We have previously demonstrated that hPSC-derived alveolar epithelial cells (AECs) are phenotypically and functionally similar to primary AECs and could be more biologically relevant alternatives for assessing the potential toxic materials including in fine dust and cigarette smoking. Therefore, in this study, we employed hPSC-AECs to evaluate their responses to exposure of various concentrations of diesel particulate matter (dPM), cigarette smoke extract (CSE) and nicotine for 48 hrs in terms of cell death, inflammation, and oxidative stress. We found that all of these toxic materials significantly upregulated the transcription of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1α, IL-β, IL-6, and TNF-α. Furthermore, the exposure of dPM (100 ㎍/mL) strongly induced upregulation of genes related with cell death, inflammation, and oxidative stress compared with other concentrations of CSE and nicotine. These results suggest that hPSC-AECs could be a robust in vitro platform to evaluate pulmotoxicity of various air pollutants and harmful chemicals.

PM10 예보 정확도 향상을 위한 Deep Neural Network 기반 농도별 분리 예측 모델 (Separation Prediction Model by Concentration based on Deep Neural Network for Improving PM10 Forecast Accuracy)

  • 미세먼지의 인체 영향이 밝혀지며 예보정확도 개선에 대한 요구가 증가하고 있다. 이에 기계 학습 기법을 도입하여 예측 정확성을 높이려는 노력이 수행되고 있으나, 저농도 발생 비율이 매우 큰 미세먼지 데이터로 인해 전체 예측 성능이 떨어지는 문제가 있다. 본 논문에서는 PM10 미세먼지 예보 정확도 향상을 위해 농도별 분리 예측 모델을 제안한다. 이를 위해 천안 지역의 기상 및 대기오염 인자를 활용하여 저, 고농도별 예측 모델을 설계하고 전 영역 예측 모델과의 성능 비교를 수행하였다. RMSE, MAPE, 상관계수 및 AQI 정확도를 통한 성능 비교 결과, 전체 기준에서 예측 성능이 향상됨을 확인하였으며, AQI 고농도 예측 성능의 경우 20.62%의 성능 향상이 나타났음을 확인하였다.

The Effect of Chelators and Reductants on the Mobilization of Metals from Ambient Particulate Matter: More Transition Metals are Mobilized with PM2.5 than with PM10

  • Ambient urban particulate matters contain various transition metals. When the particulate matters are inhaled into the lung, not all but some part of metals from the particles might be mobilized to participate in a reaction that can damage various biomolecules, such as DNA and proteins. The dust particle size as well as organic acids may influence the metal mobilization. Thus, the mobilization of the metal from SRM1648 (NIST, USA) and urban particulate matters (PM2.5 and PM10) was measured in the presence of artificial or biological chelator with or without reductant. The degree of the mobilization was higher with the artificial or biological chelator than the control with saline. In some cases, a reductant increased the mobilization as much as about 5 times the control without the reductant. Especially, the mobilization of Fe was greatly influenced by the presence of reductants. In general, the degree of the mobilization of the transition metal was higher with PM2.5 than with PM10. Therefore, it is expected that, considering the previously known toxicities of the transition metals, the PM2.5 is more damaging to various biomolecules than PM10. The results also suggest that not the total amount but the mobilizable fraction of the metal in the dust particles should be considered with regard to the toxicity of the urban particulate matters.

실내·외 실시간 모니터링을 활용한 폼알데하이드 및 미세먼지(PM10, PM2.5)의 거주시간별 노출 및 위해도 평가 (Assessment of Exposure to and Risk of Formaldehyde and Particulate Matter (PM10 and PM2.5) by Time Activity Applying Real-Time Indoor and Outdoor Monitoring)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to suggest methods to investigate continuous monitoring of concentration levels and assess the exposure of individuals considering the actual time activity of residents for formaldehyde and particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5) in the indoor and outdoor air of a house, assess the health risks of children and adults based on the results of the exposure assessment, and provide basic data on studies for assessing exposure and health risks in Korea in the future. Methods: The concentration levels of formaldehyde and particulate matter were measured in a family home in Gyeonggi-do Province from April 25 to July 31, 2019, using electrochemical sensors (formaldehyde) and light scattering sensors (PM10, PM2.5). Risk assessment by the duration of exposure by time activity was performed by dividing between weekdays and weekends, and indoors and outdoors. Results: The greatest level of carcinogenic risk from inhaling formaldehyde was indoors during the weekdays for both children and adults. For children, the risk was at 7.5 per approximately 10,000 people, and for adults, the risk was at 4.1 per approximately 10,000 people. PM10 and PM2.5 also showed the greatest values indoors during the weekdays, with children at 1.7 people and 1.4 per approximately 100 people, respectively, and adults at 8.2 per approximately 1,000 and 1.8 per approximately 100 people, respectively. Conclusions: The risks of formaldehyde, PM10 and PM2.5 were shown to be high indoors. Therefore, consideration of exposure assesment for each indoor pollutant and management of indoor air quality is necessary.

  • The aim of this research is to collect and characterize fine particles (FPM:$\leq$2.5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) and coarse particles (CPM: 2.5~10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) using a low volume air sampler provided by the IAEA, at urban (Taejon) and rural area(Wonju) for a period of about two years(April 1996 to May 1998) and to promote a use of nuclear analytical techniques for air pollution studies. For the collection of airborne particulate matter (PM(sub)10), the Gent stacked filter unit sampler and polycarbonate membrane filters were employed. The concentration of trace elements in collected APM samples were determined byu instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis. For validation of the analytical data, internal quality control were implemented by using both the comparison of the analytical results of standard reference materials(NIST SRM 1648) and interlaboratory comparison for proficiency test (NAT-3). The standard uncertainty was less than 15% and Z-score of two samples were within $\pm$1. The monitoring of (PM(sub)10) mass concentration and elemental concentrations were carried out weekly. The average mass concentration of (PM(sub)10) in urban and rural areas were 59.2$\pm$36.5$\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ and 41.4$\pm$23.7$\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥, respectively. To investigate the emission source, the enrichment factors were calculated for the fine and coarse particle fractions at two sites, respectively and these values were classified for anthropogenic and soil origin elements.

미세먼지의 영향을 고려한 머신러닝 기반 태양광 발전량 예측 (Prediction of Photovoltaic Power Generation Based on Machine Learning Considering the Influence of Particulate Matter)

  • 태양광 발전과 같은 신재생에너지의 불확실성은 전력계통의 유연성을 저해하며, 이를 방지하기 위해서는 정확한 발전량의 사전 예측이 중요하다. 본 연구는 미세먼지 농도를 포함한 기상자료를 이용하여 태양광 발전량을 예측하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 본 연구에서는 2016년 1월 1일부터 2018년 9월 30일까지의 발전량, 기상자료, 미세먼지 농도 자료를 이용하고 머신러닝 기반의 RBF 커널 함수를 사용한 서포트 벡터 머신을 적용하여 태양광 발전량을 예측하였다. 예측변수에 미세먼지 농도 반영 유무에 따른 태양광 발전량 예측 모델의 성능을 비교한 결과 미세먼지 농도를 반영한 발전량 예측 모델의 성능이 더 우수한 것으로 나타났다. 미세먼지를 고려한 예측 모형은 미세먼지를 고려하지 않은 예측 모형 대비 6~20시 예측 모형에서는 1.43%, 12~14시 예측 모형에서는 3.60%, 13시 예측 모형에서는 3.88%만큼 오차가 감소하였다. 특히 발전량이 많은 주간 시간대에 미세먼지 농도를 반영하는 모형의 예측 정확도가 더 뛰어난 것으로 나타났다.
