Performance-determining factors in flexible transparent conducting single-wall carbon nanotube film

  • Flexible transparent conducting films (TCFs) were fabricated by dip-coating single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) onto a flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film. The amount of coated SWCNTs was controlled simply by dipping number. Because the performance of SWCNT-based TCFs is influenced by both electrical conductance and optical transmittance, we evaluated the film performance by introducing a film property factor using both the number of interconnected SWCNT bundles at intersection points, and the coverage of SWCNTs on the PET substrate, in field emission scanning electron microscopic images. The microscopic film property factor was in an excellent agreement with the macroscopic one determined from electrical conductance and optical transmittance measurements, especially for a small number of dippings. Therefore, the most crucial factor governing the performance of the SWCNT-based TCFs is a SWCNT-network structure with a large number of intersection points for a minimum amount of deposited SWCNTs.

  • Recently film-typed dye sensitized solar cell(DSC) attracts much attention with increasing applications for its flexibility and transparency. The ZnO:Al thin film, which serves mainly as transparent conducting electrode, Aluminium-doped zinc oxide(ZnO:Al) thin film has emerged as one of the most promising transparent conducting films since it is inexpensive, mechanically stable, and highly resistant to deoxidation. In this paper ZnO:Al thin film was deposited on the polyethylene terephthalate(PET) substrate by the capacitively coupled r. f. magnetron sputtering method. The effects of gas pressure and r. f. discharge power on the morphological, electrical and optical properties of ZnO:Al thin film were studied. Especially the variation in substrate thickness after sputtering and surface morphology of the substrate were investigated and clarified. The results showed that the film deposited on the PET substrate at r. f. discharge power of 180 W showed the minimum resistivity of about $1.5{\times}10^{-3}{\Omega}-cm$ and a transmittance of about 93%.

  • This study presents a roll-to-roll process which is capable of Ag nanowire (AgNW) transfer from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film to polycarbonate (PC) film. We developed a roll-to-roll machine that consists of two film suppliers, a coater of photo-curable resin, a film laminator, an ultraviolet (UV) exposure unit, and a film winder to facilitate large-area electrode transfer between different flexible substates. Using the process, optimal fabrication condition was investigated by parametric experiments in terms of the UV exposure time, number of thermal cycling, and exposure time of high temperature and humidity. A fabricated AgNW on PC film showed sheet resistance of 52 Ω/sq and optical transmittance of approximately 80 % over a range of visible light.

Advanced Permeation Properties of Solvent-free Multi-Layer Encapsulation of thin films on Ethylene Terephthalate(PET)

  • In this paper, the inorganic multi-layer encapsulation of thin film was newly adopted to protect the organic layer from moisture and oxygen. Using the electron beam, Sputter, inorganic multi-layer thin-film encapsulation was deposited onto the Ethylene Terephthalate(PET) and their interface properties between inorganic and organic layer were investigated. In this investigation, the SiON $SiO_2$ and parylene layer showed the most suitable properties. Under these conditions, the water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) for PET can be reduced from level of $0.57g/m^2/day$ (bare substrate) to $1^{\ast}10^{-5}g/m^2/day$ after application of a SiON and $SiO_2$ layer. These results indicate that the $PET/SiO_2/SiON/Parylene$ barrier coatings have high potential for flexible organic light-emitting diode(OLED) applications.

  • 디스플레이 패널의 터치 스크린에 가장 널리 사용되는 ITO 전극은 사용자의 눈에 전극 면이 시각적으로 구분되지 않도록 해야 한다. 따라서 최근에는 ITO 전극 면이 구분되지 않도록 하기 위해 다층 박막으로 이루어진 인덱스 매칭(index matching, IM) 기술을 이용하여 ITO 전극 필름을 제작하고 있다. 이러한 인덱스 매칭된 ITO 필름은 기판이나 공정 조건, 인덱스 매칭 층의 물질 종류에 따라 ITO 박막의 전기적 광학적 특성이 각각 다르게 나타나기 때문에 이에 대한 많은 연구가 이루어지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 롤투롤 스퍼터링(roll to roll sputtering) 방법으로 고굴절과 저굴절이 순차적으로 코팅 처리된 PET 기판 위에 ITO 박막을 증착하여 IM-ITO 필름을 제작하고 전기적 광학적 특성을 관찰하였다. 이를 위해 습식(wet) 코팅 방법으로 저굴절층과 고굴절층을 PET 필름 위에 코팅하여 IM층을 제작한 PET 필름 위에 ITO 박막을 증착하고, $150^{\circ}C$로 후 열처리를 하여 인덱스 매칭된 ITO 필름을 제작하였다. 제작된 필름은 GIXD를 이용하여 박막의 구조와 결정성을 조사하였고, 면저항 측정기와 홀측정 장치를 이용하여 전기적 특성을 관찰하였다. 그리고 분광광도계와 탁도(haze) 측정기를 이용하여 광학적 특성을 조사하였다. 본 연구를 통해 롤투롤 스퍼터링 방법으로 유무기 복합막으로 구성된 IM-ITO 박막의 전기적 광학적 구조적 특성에 대해 보고하고자 한다.

The corrosion of the opaque zone induced under stress oscillation in PET film (PET 필름에서 응력 진동으로 유도된 불투명 존의 부식)

  • The film-type specimen of poly ethylene terephthalate (PET) was stepwise elongated under tension with various speed range of about 0.5~500 mm/min, and then the necking behavior during its plastic deformation was observed. When elongated at the speed range of about 20~100 mm/min, stress oscillation was apparently occurred in the stress-strain curve. When elongated at the speed range of about 200~500 mm/min, stress oscillation was not did. The transparent/opaque zone and cross-section area in the specimen elongated at the speed of about 50 mm/min were examined using the optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The corrosion characteristic of the specimen elongated at the speed of about 50 mm/min in 3.8 M NaOH alkali solution was examined using the optical microscopy.

Mechanically Flexible and Transparent Zinc Oxide Thin Film Transistor on Plastic Substrates (Plastic 기판 상의 투명성과 유연성을 지닌 Zinc Oxide 박막 트랜지스터)

  • We have fabricated transparent and flexible thin film transistor(TFT) on polyethylene terephthalate(PET) substrate using Zinc Oxide (ZnO) and Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) film as active layer and electrode. The transfer printing method was used for printing the device layer on target plastic substrate at room temperature. This approach have an advantage to separate the high temperature annealing process to improve the electrical properties of ZnO TFT from the device process on plastic substrate. The resulting devices on plastic substrate presented mechanical and electrical properties similar with those on rigid substrate.

Preparation and Characteristics of Transparent Anti-static Films (투명 대전방지 필름 제조 및 특성)

  • In order to develop the transparent anti-static film with higher than 80% transparency to visible light, organic conductive compounds, N-methyl phenazinium 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinonedimethane (TCNQ) com-plex salts was synthesized and bar-coated on the polythylene terephthalate (PET) film using polymer binders. The best surface properties were obtained when acrylic binder was used. A single layer of TCNQ made of a acrylic binder showed a surface resistance of 10\ulcorner $\Omega$/ , a conductivity of 10\ulcorner S/cm, and a transparency of 75%. An optical microscopic examination revealed that the binder was first solidi-fied on the surface of PET film over which the needle-shaped TCNQ crystals were grown. An acrylic polyol coating over the TCNQ layer improved the transparency to 87%, becuase the acrylic polyol covers the surface of TCNQ crystals to reduce the surface roughness. This conductive material has thermal stability at room temperature and 4$0^{\circ}C$ over 4,000 h.

  • Dichloro-(2,2)-paracyclophane을 출발 물질로 하여 화학기상증착법(CVD)을 이용해 우수한 투명성과 수분 투과성을 갖는 poly(p-xylylene) 코팅 막을 얻었다. 상기 코팅 막을 얻기 위한 최적의 공정 조건은 Deposition Pressure 0.02~0.04Torr, Vaporization temperature $110{\sim}150^{\circ}C$으로 확인 되었다. 이러한 공정 조건으로 500 mm*500 mm size의 PET bare film을 코팅 기재로 사용하여 $10{\mu}m$, $20{\mu}m$의 parylene 코팅 막을 얻었고 이를 특성 분석해 보았다. 상기 코팅 막은 전체적으로 ${\pm}1{\mu}m$의 thickness uniformity가 관찰 되었고 투과율은 90% 이상을 보였으며 수분 투과율은 기재 대비 상대적으로 40%의 향상이 기대 되었다. 또한 우수한 내식성, 내염기성, 내용제성을 갖고 있었으며 PET 기재에 대해 우수한 부착력을 가지고 있었다. surface morphology는 AFM을 통해 분석하였으며 Ra가 15.123, Rq가 22.859로 측정 되었다.
