Helium-oxygen plasma treatments were conducted to modify poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PIT) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) warp knitted fabrics under atmospheric pressure. Lubricant and contamination removals by plasma etching effect were examined by weight loss $(\%)$ measurements and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. Surface oxidation by plasma treatments was revealed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses, resulting in formation of hydrophilic groups and moisture regain $(\%)$ enhancement. Low-stress mechanical properties (evaluated by Kawabata evaluation system) and bulk properties (air permeability and bust strength) were enhanced by plasma treatment. Increasing interfiber and interyarn frictions might play important roles in enhancing surface property changes by plasma etching effect, and then changing low-stress mechanical properties and bulk properties for both fabrics.
The electrostatic layer-by-layer technique provides a convenient way to control the construction of ultrathin films at nano-scale ranges and can be easily obtained. It can be also applicable to fiber substrate with dye compounds. We have fabricated multilayer dye films using diazonium resin and three couplers, which are prepared by self-assembly approach. This method is based on layer-by-layer deposition using electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions. Beside, the diazo coupling reaction proceeded to form azo dye layer on the PET fibers the same time. The corresponding results of the multilayer films have been discussed on the level of color strength (K/S).
Cooling function is definitely one of the most desirable attribute of clothing. In spite of the recent progress on phase changing material(PCM) research, the final products with sufficient amount of cooling capability have not yet to be developed in market. A new concept of cooling fabrics has been proposed by applying "Peltier effect" to textile materials. It occurs whenever electrical current flows through two dissimilar conductors; depending on the direction of current flow, the junction of the two conductors is absorbed or released heat. This effect has been tested on P-type and N-type conducting polymers. A P-type conductive polypyrrole coated fabric was synthesized by in-situ polymerization on plain weave PET to make conductive fabrics. And an N-type electrically conductive material was synthesized by treatment of MWNT and polyethyleneimine(PEI). A noticeable amount of temperature difference has been found on the fabrics.
This paper describes the application of our recently developed two-phase model for flow-induced crystallization (FIC) to the simulation of fiber spinning and film blowing. 1-D and 2-D simulations of fiber spinning include the combined effects of (FIC), viscoelasticity, filament cooling, air drag, inertia, surface tension and gravity and the process dynamics are modeled from the spinneret to the take-up roll device (below the freeze point). 1-D model fits and predictions are in very good quantitative agreement with high- and low-speed spinline data for both nylon and PET systems. Necking and the associated extensional softening are also predicted. Consistent with experimental observations, the 2-D model also predicts a skin-core structure at low and intermediate spin speeds, with the stress, chain extension and crystallinity being highest at the surface. Film blowing is simulated using a "quasi-cylindrical" approximation for the momentum equations, and simulations include the combined effects of flow-induced crystallization, viscoelasticity, and bubble cooling. The effects of inflation pressure, melt extrusion temperature and take-up ratio on the bubble shape are predicted to be in agreement with experimental observations, and the location of the frost line is predicted naturally as a consequence of flow-induced crystallization. An important feature of our FIC model is the ability to predict stresses at the freeze point in fiber spinning and the frost line in film blowing, both of which are related to the physical and mechanical properties of the final product.l product.

Polymer composites based on a thermotropic liquid-crystalline polymer (TLCP) and poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) were prepared using a melt blending process. Polymer composites consisting of bulk cheap polyester with a small quantity of expensive TLCP are of interest from a commercial perspective. The interactions between the PBT chains and the flexible poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) units in the TLCP phase resulted in an improvement in the compatibility of PBT/TLCP composites. TLCP droplets deformed and fragmented into smaller droplets in the PBT/TLCP composites, which resulted in TLCP fibrillation through the effective deformation of the TLCP droplets. The nucleation activities of the PBT/TLCP composites increased by adding even a small amount of the TLCP component.
Neutral salts have negative or positive effects on the rates of many chemical reactions and also on the rates of acidic and alkaline hydrolysis of carboxylic esters. The direction of neutral salt effects on the hydrolysis of ester depends on the charge of esters. Neutral salts accelerate alkaline hydrolysis of esters with negative charge, but decelerate alkaline hydrolysis of esters with positive charge, and have little effect on the alkaline hydrolysis of neutral esters. It is expected that the rate of the alkaline hydrolysis of Poly(ethylene terephthalte) (PET), polymeric solid carboxylic polyester with carboxyl end group at the polymer end, is also influenced positively by neutral salts. In the present work, to clarify the mechanism of the neutral salt effect on the alkaline hydrolysis of PET, many salts with different anions like NaF, NACl, NaBr, NaI were added to the aqueous alkaline solutions. Then PET was hydrolyzed with aqueous solutions of many salts in alkali metal hydroxides under various conditions. Some conclusions obtained from the experimental results were summarized as follows. The reaction rate of the alkaline hydrolysis of PET was increased by the addition of neutral salts and In k was increased nearly linearly with the square root of ionic strength of reaction medium. This fact suggested that the ionic strength effect by Debye-Huckel and Bronsted theory was exerted on the reaction. The specific salt effect was also observed. The reaction rate was increased with the decrease in the nucleophilicity of anions of neutral salts, i.e., in the order of $F^-$ <$Cl^-$<$Br^-$<$I^-$. It was thought that the reaction rate was increased in the order of $F^-$ <$Cl^-$<$Br^-$<$I^-$. because the completion of anions with $OH^-$ for carbonyl carbon became weaker with the decrease in the nucleophilicity and with the increase in the size of anions.
Mushroom-based vegan meat has thus far been used as a food for humans instead of pets. However, based on its texture and nutritional content, it is considered suitable for processing into pet treats. In the present study, we developed a prototype dog chew with a sweetening coating added to a fungal mycelium mat obtained by culturing the Basidiomycetous fungus Trametes orientalis. The palatable coating applied to the mycelium mat by plasticizing the mat with glycerol improved the taste and aroma of the existing mat, and the dog consumed it without difficulty. Future improvements may include a softening process to reduce the chewiness level and a procedure to reduce the crude fiber content. Mycelium-mat-based dog chews, manufactured using eco-friendly materials and processes that are not harmful to the environment are expected to enter the market as eco-friendly alternatives to conventional pet treats. Controlling their physical properties require further study.

Glass fiber reinforced PET (Poly-Ethylene-Terephthalate) matrix composite was manufactured by rapid press consolidation technique as functions of temperature, pressure and time in pre-heating, consolidation and solidification stages. The optimal manufacturing conditions for this composite were discussed based on the void content, tensile, interlaminar shear, and impact properties. A tensile test was attempted to investigate the mechanical properties of the composite. It is found that the level of crystallinity and microstructure affects on the tensile properties substantially.
Liquid crystalline (LC) poly(ethylene terephthalate-co-2(3)-chloro-1,4-phenylene terephthalate) (50/50, mole/mole) [PECPT] was synthesized and blended with polycarbonate (PC). LC properties of PECPT and thermal, morphological, and rheological behaviors of the PECPT/PC blend were studied. PECPT showed the nematic LC phase and much longer relaxation time than poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). The apparent melt viscosity of PECPT was one third of that of FET. An abrupt torque change was observed during the blending process due to the orientation of LC domains. For the blends containing 10~30 wt% of PECPT, the complex viscosities were higher than that of PC. As PECPT content increases above 40 wt%, shear thinning was observed. The lowest complex viscosity was obtained at 40~50 wt%. Transesterification of PECPT and PC was confirmed by the selective chemical degradation of carbonate groups in PC.
