Photolithographic Method of Patterning Barrier Ribs for PDP by Green Sheet

  • Barrier ribs in the plasma display panel(PDP) function to maintain the discharge space between the glass plates as well as to prevent optical crosstalk. Patterning of barrier ribs is one of unique processes for making PDP. In this work photosensitive barrier rib pastes were prepared by incorporating binder polymer, solvent, functional monomers photoinitiator, and barrier rib powder of which surface was treated with fumed silica particles. Study on the function of materials for the barrier rib paste were undertaken. After optimization of paste formulation and photolithographic process, it was found that photolithographic patterning of barrier ribs with photosensitive barrier rib green sheet could be used in the fabrication of high resolution PDP.

A Study on Mold Fabrication and Forming for PDP Barrier Ribs (PDP 격벽 성형용 몰드 제작과 성형에 대한 연구)

  • Plasma Display Panel(PDP) is a type of flat panel display utilizing the light emission produced by gas discharge. Barrier Ribs of PDP separating each sub-pixel prevents optical and electrical crosstalks from adjacent sub-pixels. Mold for forming barrier ribs has been newly researched to overcome the disadvantages of conventional manufacturing process such as screen printing, sand-blasting and photosensitive glass methods. Mold for PDP barrier ribs have stripes of micro grooves transferring glass-material wall. In this paper, Stripes of grooves of which width 48${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 270${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, depth 124${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, pitch 274${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ was acquired by machining hard and brittle materials of WC, Silicon, Alumina with dicing saw blade. Maximum roughness of the bottom and sidewall of the grooves was respectively 120nm, 287nm in grooving WC. Maximum tilt angle caused by difference between upper-most width and lower-most width was 2$^{\circ}$. Maximum Radius of bottom curvatures was 7.75${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. This results satisfies the specification for barrier ribs of 50 inch XGA PDP if the groove form of mold was fully transferred to the barrier ribs. Barrier ribs were formed with Silicone rubber mold, which is transferred from grooved hard materials. Silicone rubber mold has elasticity accommodating the waveness of lower glass plate of PDP.

  • In an attempt to reduce processing cost and to improve resolution of PDPs, micro mold transfer processing route for barrier ribs of plasma display panel was attempted. In this study, the parameters that may cause defects during the process were identified, which include the shrinkage during UV curing process, stress due to evaporation of organic components, and sintering shrinkage. Considering such parameters, UV curable paste was developed and barrier ribs of PDPs were successfully processed via the process. This work demonstrated the possibility of build-up route in manufacturing barrier ribs of PDP.

  • In this study, a new processing route of barrier ribs for the plasma display panels was attempted. A slurry containing ceramic powders for the barrier ribs, binder, hardener, and other additives, was molded into a PDMS mold by capillary infiltration process. The molded slurry was cured prior to mold removal. It was demonstrated that the process can fabricate successfully the cell type barrier ribs of PDP.

  • Barrier ribs for PDP(plasma display panel) are commonly utilized to have uniform height and width and to prevent opical crosstalk between adjacent cells. The requirements for such barrier ribs are uniform height and shape, low outgassing rate and low porosity, high aspect ratio, and fine resolution. In this study, we are studied about that to make efficiency of material and high quality barrier ribs for PDP. As a result, could got high barrier ribs of $140{\mu}m$ evenly in 1th phenomenon using watersoluble UV curing resin and know that flatness of upper part is also very good.

  • Paste micro-injection molding process was applied for fabrication of barrier ribs of PDP in an attempt to reduce processing steps and materials loss during the processing. For the paste, a thermally curable one was used and for the mold, a polymeric soft mold was used. It was demonstrated that the micro-molding process can be used successfully in producing barrier ribs of PDP.

Maximum roughness of the bottom of the grooves was 59.6nm Ra in grooving Si. Barrier ribs were formed with silicone rubber mold, which is transferred from grooved Si forming hard mold. Silicone rubber mold has the elasticity, which enable to accommodate the waveness of lower glass plate of PDP. The methods assisted by the microwave and UV was adopted for reducing the forming time of glass paste.

High Precision Molding Process for Barrier Ribs of PDP by using a Soft Mold and a Green Sheet

  • In this paper, high precision molding process was developed using a soft mold to fabricate fine closed-types of the barrier ribs for PDP. A green sheet was employed to fabricate the barrier ribs in this process. The soft mold with good demolding characteristics was replicated from a master mold. An optimal forming load which would not fracture the soft mold was also determined. The barrier ribs of rectangular type with upper width of $30\;{\mu}m$ would be fabricated by this process.

  • In this study, an attempt was made to demonstrate the possibility of using laser scribing method in manufacturing the barrier ribs of plasma display panel. The scribing with a CO2 laser was conducted on the green tape produced by the doctor blade tape casting method. Among the processing parameters, the quenching gas pressure, shape of mask, and laser power were found to affect the depth and angle of the scibed barrier ribs.
