A Study on the Correlation Between the PD Pattern and the Type of Electrical Trees Propagation in the XLPE Insulation for the Underground Power Transmission

  • In this work, the correlation between the PD Patterns and the electrical tree propagation has been investigated by use of the specimen removed from the insulation of the real 154 kV XLPE underground power cables. As a result, it could be deduced that the PD pattern regarding electrical trees depends on their type which could be classified into three different distinct groups such as branch-bush mixed. Considering the results of our investigation, if the partial discharge magnitude is only considered for the diagnosis of the cable system, it is possible to draw a wrong decision. Therefore, it is possible to propose that the time characteristics of PD pattern should be taken into account for the diagnosis of the cable system in addition to the conventional $\Phi$-q-n characteristics.

  • HFPD(High Frequency Partial Discharge) measurement has been widely performed to diagnose cable system in the world. Shin-Yeongdeungpo 345kV XLPE line was successfully diagnosed by PD measurement methode last year. Moreover, aged power cable lines which were installed 15 years ago have been tested from this year. In this paper, the result of PD diagnosis for aged 154kV cable line is reported. The PD pattern from TMJ which was monitored by PD measurement system for several days showed typical void pattern. The joint was replaced and voids between semi-conductor layer and insulating layer in the joint was founded.

  • The principle of the ultra-high frequency (UHF) method to detect partial discharge(PD) in GIS is to measure the UHF electromagnetic waves excited by PD pulses. Such electromagnetic waves propagate along the GIS busbar in the TEM-mode, TE-mode, TM-mode. And the coaxial busbar of the GIS acts as a waveguide in which the UHF electromagnetic waves travel. This paper was studied the analysis on damping characteristic of electromagnetic waves excited by PD in GIS and presented the method to yield the cutoff frequency for determine the minimum band of sensor that detect the PD pulse.

  • In this paper, a new on-line high-voltage motor monitoring system is proposed. This system monitors the insulation condition of the stator winding by on-line measurements of partial discharge (PD). And this system displays magnitude and phase angle distribution of PD. Sensor, CC (Ceramic Coupler) is used for PD measurement. PD signals are continuously measured and digitized with a A/D converter to build the database of the high-voltage motor's insulation condition. Also, this system can communicate with the central monitoring system via RS-232, 422, and TCP/IP. This helps more efficient operation and maintenance of the high-voltage motor.

  • Recently, the importance of supplying the reliable electric power is increasing. Breaking insulation of stator winding is major cause of fault in rotator machine. On-line PD detecting is useful technique to diagnose rotator machine. However, interpretation of its results in time domain is very complex because of the mixed results with PD(Partial Discharge) and noise signal. Therefore, the results were analyzed in frequency domain by FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) to detect precise PD signals. The purpose of this paper is to describe the optimal frequency range to discriminate the PD and noise signal.

  • To decrease and remove of much noises that is detected in PD (partial discharge) measuring test. we forced on detection of those. We made W-LC filter for measuring PD. which adapted that to field test. We tested after design laboratory circumstances like field line. and then the phase change properties of detected signal in UHF sensor were measured by Lemke Probe and oscilloscope (TDS-3054. Tektronix). Eventually we checked decrement of noises from experimental result. Also from experimental result at the joint box of 22.9[kV] distribution line. we obtained reasonable data which enable noises to decrease. Hereafter those results will be adapted at ultra-high voltage for trouble prevention and on-line cable watch. diagnosis of those.

  • This paper presents a neural network approach for on-line estimation of partial discharge(PD) location using advanced correlation technique in power transformer. Ultrasonic sensors detect ultrasonic signals generated by a PD and the proposed method calculates time difference between the ultrasonic signals at each sensor pair using the cross-correlation technique applied by moving average and the Hamming window. The neural network takes distance difference as inputs converted from time difference, and estimates the PD location. Case studies showed that the proposed method using advanced correlation technique and a neural network estimated the PD location better than conventional methods.

  • On-line monitoring of fault discharge is an important approach for indicating the condition of electrical insulation of stator winding in high voltage motor. In this paper, several key aspects of on-line monitoring system are discussed, involving the characteristics of fault discharge of stator winding in high voltage motor, spectrum analysis of four simulation fault signals, feature extraction of internal fault discharge from apply voltage to breakdown. The study of the partial discharge activities allows to highlight the ageing stage in the winding fault under test. During the life of the winding insulation fault, the shape of PD signal change relating to the ageing stage. The ageing of stator winding insulation fault of high voltage motor is investigated based on the characteristics of partial discharge pulse distribution and statistical parameters, such as maximum, skewness and kurtosis using discrete wavelet trnasform coefficients.

  • We studied the partial discharge detecting by sensing electromagnetic pulse emitted from the partial discharge source in the stator winding of HV Rotating Machine with UWB sensor. In this study, we designed new type of compact low frequency UWB sensor based on micro-strip technology and made experiments of offline dismantled testing compare with the traditional HFCT as a reference sensor in the laboratory. We investigated internal discharge, surface discharge, corona discharge and non-defected state normal stator on pre-made stator winding by using UWB patch sensor.
