Improving Traffic Infrastructure in a Developing Country: An Investigation into the Usage of Public Bus Transport in Malaysia

  • Economic growth with rising household income has put more vehicles on the roads worsening traffic congestion, road accidents, and air and noise pollution. This situation is further aggravated by the potential working population who choose to drive to work instead of taking public transportation. Public bus transport (PBT) plays an important role in alleviating these problems. PBT is underutilized in Malaysia, and there is an opportunity to increase ridership without substantial investment. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the factors that influence the use of PBT in Malaysia. The data were collected using structured questionnaires from 400 respondents. The results of the analysis show that the twin factors consisting of perceived satisfaction of and perceived importance by users towards safety and comfort of facilities and services offered by PBT are significantly related to intention to use those services. The satisfaction of availability of season tickets, the importance of reliability of bus schedule and time table, and the importance of ticket pricing are also significant. By providing insights for both public bus operators and the government, this paper contributes to mitigate the underutilization of PBT in Malaysia and the consequences of putting more vehicles on the roads. From the theory perspective, this paper also contributes by extending the theory of reasoned-action to transportation studies.

Comparison of the Properties of Poly(butylene terephthalate) Nanocomposite Fibers with Different Organoclays

  • The aims of this study were to investigate the intercalation of polymer chains with organoclays and improve the thermo-mechanical properties of poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) hybrids by comparing PBT hybrids synthesized using two different organoclays. The organoclays; dodecyltriphenylphosphonium-montmorillonite ($C_{12}PPh-MMT$) and dodecyltriphenylphosphonium-mica ($C_{12}PPh-Mica$), were used to fabricate the PBT hybrid fibers. Variations in the properties of the hybrid fibers with the organoclays within the polymer matrix, as well as the draw ratio (DR), are discussed. The thermo-mechanical properties and morphologies of the PBT hybrid fibers were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy and mechanical tensile properties analysis. The nanostructures of the hybrid fibers were determined using both scanning and transmission electron microscopies, which showed some of the clay layers to be well dispersed within the matrix polymer, although some clustered or agglomerated particles were also detected. The thermal properties of the hybrid fibers were found to be better than those of the pure PBT fibers at a DR = 1. The tensile mechanical properties of the $C_{12}PPh-MMT$ hybrid fibers were found to worsen with increasing DR. However, the initial moduli of the $C_{12}PPh-Mica$ hybrid fibers were found to slightly increase on increasing the DR from 1 to 18.

  • PBT 섬유에 관한 연구[1-4]는 주로 섬유화 가능성에 관한 것을 타진하는 것으로써, 그 중 Spruiell[1]은 권취속도 1000-5600m/min에서 얻어진 PBT 필라멘트의 구조와 물성에 대하여 연구하였다. 그는 방사시 온라인상의 직경변화, 온도, 하중의 변화에 대해 연구하였으며, 방사선상에서 PET에 비해 결정화속도가 매우 빠르다고 보고하였다. 저자 등[2-3]은 권취속도 1-8km/min까지 변화시켜 얻은 PBT섬유의 구조에 관한 연구에서 6km/min 이상의 속도에서 얻은 경우 초기탄성률이 최고값을 가지며 그 이후 변화가 없음을 확인하였다.   • The shrinkages of injection molded parts are different in molding operational conditions, resins and additives. The shrinkage of injection molded part for crystalline polymer, PBT (polybutylene terephthalate) has been studied for various operational conditions of injection molding and content of additives. Mica was used as a additive to PBT to examine the part shrinkage according to the mica content. The part shrinkages of mica contained PBT decreased as mica content increases. Higher injection temperature and injection pressure resulted in a lower shrinkage. As mold temperature increases the part shrinkage decreased. The part shrinkage of flow direction was less than that of the perpendicular direction to the flow for both pure and mica contained PBT. However the shrinkage difference between flow and perpendicular to flow directions decreased as mica content increased.

전자선 가교된 PBT의 충격 특성 및 내마모 특성 연구 (The Impact Properties and Wear Resistance of Polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) Cross-linked by Electron Beam Irradiation)

  • Poly(butylenes terephthalate) have made large strides in applications of injection, extrusion, and molding material due to their excellent thermal resistance and appropriate mechanical properties. However, PBT was not hard polymer but a soft polymer which caused low absorption of external energy and the defect of being easily broken with the strong impact. Thus, the electron beam irradiation was carried out over a range of irradiation doses from 100 to 1,000 kGy for enhancing the properties. The decreases of $T_m$, $T_c$, and enthalpy were observed as increasing the absorbed dose in the results of DSC analysis. The improvement in the impact strength of PBT was clearly observed as the absorbed dose was increased. This was probably due to the 3-dimensional network structures, resulting in increasing the absorption of impact energy. In addition, the wear properties had increased at higher than 300 kGy. The negative deviation of weight loss confirmed the improvement of the wear properties of PBT, as evidenced by SEM observation on the wear surfaces.

  • In this study, the flat-section monofilaments of PBT for artificial eyelashes was developed, and the physical properties of the circular cross-section of artificial eyelashes were compared and observed, and the main performance of the artificial eyelash prototype was observed through processing for artificial eyelashes. In addition, a satisfaction survey of the prototype was conducted through a survey of consumers and artificial eyelash operators. It was found that the bending stiffness value of the monofilaments increased significantly as the thickness increased. As a result of measuring the bending properties of the flat-section PBT monofilaments, the bending stiffness was significantly lower than that of the circular-section PBT specimens of the same thickness. The deformed cross-section PBT monofilaments with flat cross sections developed in this study showed a light weight factor of less than 50% compared to the existing circular cross-section PBT ones. The adhesive strength of the developed PBT artificial specimens was greater than that of the existing circular cross-section yarn. It was also observed that the curl stability over time was excellent. As a result of the consumer survey, it was possible to obtain more than 85% of positive answers in the case of consumer subjects, and it was possible to investigate that the satisfaction of the operator subjects was more than 80% compared to the existing round-section eyelashes.

Initial clinical outcomes of proton beam radiotherapy for hepatocellular carcinoma

  • Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the initial outcomes of proton beam therapy (PBT) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in terms of tumor response and safety. Materials and Methods: HCC patients who were not indicated for standard curative local modalities and who were treated with PBT at Samsung Medical Center from January 2016 to February 2017 were enrolled. Toxicity was scored using the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE) version 4.0. Tumor response was evaluated using modified Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (mRECIST). Results: A total of 101 HCC patients treated with PBT were included. Patients were treated with an equivalent dose of $62-92GyE_{10}$. Liver function status was not significantly affected after PBT. Greater than 80% of patients had Child-Pugh class A and albumin-bilirubin (ALBI) grade 1 up to 3-months after PBT. Of 78 patients followed for three months after PBT, infield complete and partial responses were achieved in 54 (69.2%) and 14 (17.9%) patients, respectively. Conclusion: PBT treatment of HCC patients showed a favorable infield complete response rate of 69.2% with acceptable acute toxicity. An additional follow-up study of these patients will be conducted.

Polycarbonate/polybutylene Terephthalate/Impact Modifier 블렌드의 유동특성, 기계적 성질 및 내화학성 (Flow Characteristics, Mechanical Properties and Chemical Resistance of Polycarbonate/Polybutylene Terephthalate/Impact Modifier Blends)

  • 본 논문은 폴리카보네이트 (PC)/폴리부틸렌 테레프탈레이트 (PBT)/충격보강제 (IM) 블렌드에서 PC와 PBT의 조성비에 따른 기계적 성질 및 유동 특성을 조사하였다. 부타디엔계 IM과 부틸아크릴레이트계 IM을 사용하여 각각의 함량에 따른 상온에서의 기계적 물성의 변화와 저온에서의 충격강도를 관찰하였다. 블렌드의 내화학성을 살펴보기 위해 PC/PBT/IM 블렌드를 유기용제인 신너에 침지시킨 후 기계적 물성의 변화를 분석하였다. 블렌드에 PC 함량이 많아질수록 인장 및 굴곡강도가 선형적으로 증가하였고 열변형 온도 역시 증가하였다. 충격강도는 PC의 함량이 약 50 wt% 일 때까지 급격히 증가하며 그 이상의 함량에서는 일정하게 유지되었다. 유동성은 PC함량이 증가할수록 감소하였다. IM의 종류에 따라서 충격특성이 다르게 관찰되었는데, 부틸 아크릴레이트계 IM은 $0^{\circ}C$ 이상의 온도에서 부타디엔계 IM보다 충격강도가 다소 높게 나타났으나 $0^{\circ}C$ 미만에서는 충격강도가 현저하게 낮아졌다. 내화학성 실험에서는 블렌드에서 PC의 함량이 많을수록 인장 및 굴곡강도가 감소하는 반면 충격강도는 증가하였다. 이는 유기용제에 약한 PC가 연화되면서 나타나는 현상이라 사료된다.

  • 국내 건설현장에서는 성토다짐의 다짐도 확인을 위해 주로 평판재하시험(PBT)을 사용한다 평판재하시험은 재하시험시 표층의 매우 잘 다져진 곳에 대한 지지력 계수를 획득하여 실다짐도를 과대 평가하는 결과를 초래할 수 있다. 이에 착안하여 응력도달 범위가 작은 평판재하시험을 지양하고 콘관입시험으로부터 획득되는 노상의 관입지수로부터 지반의 다짐도를 추정할 수 있는 콘관입시험기와 구동시스템 및 해석 프로그램을 개발하였다. 개발된 시스템은 다짐차량에 간편하게 부착하여 현장에서 직접 다짐도를 획득할 수 있으며 다짐도와 더불어 다져진 지반의 전단강도정수를 동시에 측정할 수 있다.
