Inclusion of Dietary Palm Oil and Soy Oil on Growth Performance and Nutrition Digestibility in Broiler Chickens

  • The effects of palm oil and soy oil supplementation in broiler chickens on growth performance and nutrient digestibility of dry matter, nitrogen, and energy was evaluated. In this experiment, 702 one-day-old Ross 308 cross bred chicks with an initial body weight of 42.23±0.05 g (mean±SD) were utilized in a completely randomized treatment design (13 replicates/treatment, 18 chickens/cage) and fed for 35 days with CON (basal diet), T1 (Basal diet + 1.3 % palm oil), and T2 (Basal diet + 1.3% soy oil). From days 1 to 7, the body weight gain (BWG), feed intake (FI), and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were not significantly affected by the supplementation with palm oil or soy oil. However, from days 7 to 21, BWG showed a tendency to increase compared to that with the control treatment. Moreover, BWG was significantly improved (P<0.05) with palm and soy oil supplementation during the overall experiment in comparison to that with the control diet. In addition, the palm oil-supplemented group had higher BWG than the soy oil treatment group (P<0.05). During the overall experiment, FI tended to increase in the T1 group compared to that in the other groups. There was no significant effect on FCR and nutrient digestibility of dry matter, nitrogen, and energy during the overall trial with the supplementation of palm or soy oil. In summary, the inclusion of dietary palm and soy oil has a beneficial effect on the growth performance of broiler chickens.

Blending Effect of Palm Oil on Physicochemical Properties of Rice Bran Oil

  • Rice bran ell was blended with double fractionated palm olein (DF palm olein) to examine the cooking performance of blended oil. A blended oil made with 80% or higher rice bran oil and 20% or less DF palm olein passed the cold test, and had a cloud point of $-3^{\circ}C$. Blending of DF palm olein to rice bran oil lowered the smoke point, refractive index, and absorbancies at 232 and 268 nm of rice bran oil. Dielectric constant of oils was not affected by blending during heating. Blending of DF palm olein , however, increased the acids formation in rice bran oil, whereas it retarded polymer formation. The results of the analytical methods used in this study except dielectric constant measurement showed significant difference among the blended oils depending on the blending ratios.

손금과 손바닥 정맥을 함께 이용한 심층 신경망 기반 사용자 인식 (User Identification Method using Palm Creases and Veins based on Deep Learning)

  • 손바닥은 손금, 정맥 등 고유한 특징 정보를 포함하고 있는 신체 부위로 이를 이용한 다양한 사용자 인식 방법이 지속적으로 연구되어 왔다. 본 논문에서는 손금과 손바닥 정맥을 함께 이용한 사용자 인식 방법을 제안한다. 먼저, 손바닥 영역에서 손금과 정맥이 가장 많이 포함되어 있는 관심 영역을 검출하고, 에지 방향성 및 밝기 통계정보를 이용하여 정맥 영상 화질 개선을 수행한다. 이후 다중 스펙트럼 환경에서 획득된 복수의 영상을 각각 독립된 심층 신경망의 입력으로 이용하여 손금과 정맥 패턴을 효과적으로 학습한다. 다양한 상황에서의 실험을 통해 본 논문에서 제안하는 방법이 기존 사용자 인식 방법 대비 개선된 결과를 보임을 확인하고 그 결과를 분석한다.

Above Ground Carbon Stock Through Palm Tree in the Homegarden of Sylhet City in Bangladesh

  • An explanatory survey was conducted to assess the contribution of palm species in carbon sequestration in the homegarden of the Sylhet Metropolitan City Corporation of Bangladesh. Assessment was done by means of two stage random sampling. A total of 10 housing area were selected randomly for the study and 4 common palm tree species were found abundantly. From the observations abundance of palm trees [Areca catechu (175/housing area), Cocos nucifera (145/housing area), Borassus flabellifer (124/housing area) and Phoenix sylvestris (27/housing area)] were found higher in all homesteads in comparison with other species. Study revealed that total organic carbon (MTOC mt/ha) was highest in Cocos nucifera (12.48 mt/ha), followed by Areca catechu (4.20 mt/ha), Borassus flabellifer (3.02 mt/ha) and Phoenix sylvestris (0.59 mt/ha). Total amount of organic carbon stored by palm trees in homestead areas was found 20.28 metric ton/ hector in the study area. Study revealed that palm trees of homestead forest accumulate a good amount of biomass and is a good sinker of organic carbon from the atmosphere. Proper management of palm trees will help to improve the local, national and international community through carbon sequestration.

Traditional Coconut Farming in the Rural Landscape of Meghna Floodplain in Bangladesh

  • An exploratory survey was performed to assess the present status of distribution and production of coconut palm (Cocos nucifera Linn.) in the rural landscape of Meghna floodplain of Bangladesh. A multistage simple random sampling technique was adopted to identify the study area and respondents. A total of 50 households were selected randomly for the study. Traditional knowledge on cultivation, management, and production of coconut palm was emphasized. Marketing of coconut palm products and income derived from coconut palm cultivation was taken into consideration. Perceptions of farmers, traders and professionals were described in due context of opportunities and constraints of coconut palm cultivation. Coconut palm cultivation was found to play an important role in household economy in rural Bangladesh sharing considerable contribution to the total income. About 10% of their total annual income was reported to come from coconut husbandry. Highest number of the coconut palms, 24%, was found to grow in the homestead compounds and in the pond banks. About one-third lands of the households were found to be covered by the coconut palms. Maximum, 19%, coconut palms were found in the 16-20 years age-class. Production of coconut was found highest at the age-class 11-15 years. The study found some important opportunities and constraints of coconut farming in rural Meghna floodplain area of Bangladesh. The results of this study would be useful for the rural development practitioners in Bangladesh.

Palm Vitamin E Prevents Osteoporosis in Orchidectomized Growing Male Rats

  • Testosterone deficiency increased bone resorption, giving rise to osteoporosis. Testosterone deficiency also increased lipid peroxidation and free radical formation. Free radicals have been shown to be toxic to osteoblasts as well as to activate osteoclasts. In this study, the effects of giving an antioxidant, i.e. vitamin E-rich extract from palm oil on bone mineral density and calcium content was studied. Palm vitamin E prevented the loss in bone mineral density due to orchidectomy, seen in the whole femur, proximal amd midshaft regions, as well as L4 vertebra. Similar observations were seen in bone calcium content of the L5 vertebra. Giving palm olein also prevented the loss in bone mineral density in the femoral midshaft and L4 vertebra; and bone calcium content in the L5 vertebra. In conclusion, vitamin E-rich extract from palm oil was effective in preventing the loss in bone mineral density and calcium content of orchidectomized male rats. This action is probably due to its role as an antioxidant.

Value of palm kernel co-products in swine diets

  • Recently, swine production costs have increased due to increased feed cost, especially the price of corn and soybean meals. Soybean meal is traditionally an expensive ingredient, but the price of corn has dramatically increased because of increased biofuel production. This change has resulted in the swine industry looking for alternatives in order to reduce feed cost, resulting in decreased production costs. Thus, various alternatives have been used as feed ingredients to replace corn, soybean meal, or other expensive ingredients. One othercandidate may be palm kernel co-products that are a by-product of oil extraction from palm fruits. Palm kernel co-products have not been used in swine diets due to high fiber content and imbalanced amino acids compared with corn and soybean meal. However, recent studies showed that palm kernel co-products did not have any negative effects on growth performance of pigs when they replaced some proportions of corn and soybean meal. In addition, palm kernel co-products may provide some physiological properties to pigs by modifying gut microbiota and/or immunity of pigs, resulting in improvement of growth and health of pigs. Therefore, the value of palm kernel co-products were reviewed as one of the alternatives for corn, soybean meal, or other major ingredients in swine diets.

죽초액의 팜유와 돈지의 저장 중 산패 억제 효과 (Antioxidative Effect of Bamboo Smoke Distillates in Palm Oil and Lard during Storage)

  • 저장기간 동안 죽초액을 첨가한 팜유와 돈지는 뚜렷한 산패 억제 효과를 보였으며 과산화물가, 산가, TBA가 등 항산화효과는 농도가 증가함에 따라 비례적으로 증가하였고 그 중에서 죽초액 1.0%를 첨가하였을 때의 효과가 가장 좋았으며 그 정도는 BHT 0.02% 첨가하였을 때와 유사하였거나 더 좋았고 ${\alpha}-tocopherol$ 0.02% 첨가한 것보다는 월등히 높은 산화억제 효과를 보였다. 각 식용유지에 죽초액의 첨가량을 달리하였을 때 유도기간과 상대적 항산화효과는 농도가 증가할수록 크게 나타났으며 죽초액 1.0% 첨가가 팜유와 돈지에 대하여 유도기간은 각각 21.24일과 12.37일이었고 상대적 항산화효과는 각각193.97%와 1671.62%로 나타나 죽초액은 돈지에 대한 산화안정성이 팜유에 비하여 컸다.

Sustainable Development of Palm Oil: Synthesis and Electrochemical Performance of Corrosion Inhibitors

  • Palm oil production is among the highest worldwide, and it has been mainly used in the food industry and other commodities. Currently, a lot of palm oil production has been destined for the synthesis of biodiesel; however, its use in applications other than the food industry has been questioned. Thereby for a sustainable development, in this paper the use of palm oil of low quality for corrosion inhibitors synthesis is proposed. The performance of the synthesized inhibitors was evaluated by using electrochemical techniques such as open circuit potential measurements, linear polarization resistance and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results indicate that the fatty amides from palm oil are excellent corrosion inhibitors with protection efficiencies greater than 98%. Fatty amides molecules act as cathodic inhibitors decreasing the anodic dissolution of iron. When fatty amides are added, a rapid decrease in the corrosion rate occurs due to the rapid formation of a molecular film onto carbon steel surface. During the adsorption process of the inhibitor a self-organization of the hydrocarbon chains takes place forming a tightly packed hydrophobic film. These results demonstrate that the use of palm oil for the production of green inhibitors promises to be an excellent alternative for a sustainable use of the palm oil production.

Propolis 추출물의 유지 산화 억제 효과 비교 (Antioxidative Effect of Propolis Extract on Palm Oil and Lard)

  • Propolis를 몇 가지 용매로 추출하여 분획물을 얻고 이를 palm oil과 lard에 단독으로 혹은 synergist와 함께 첨가하여 항산화 효과를 Rancimat을 이용하여 측정하였다. 용매별 추출,수율은 68.1%(75% ethanol), 75.5%(99% ethanol), 67.4%(methanol), 86.7%(chloroform), 72.6%(ethyl acetate), 65.6%(butanol)였다. Methanol 추출물이 항산화 효과가 가장 우수 하였고 palm oil 보다는 lard에서 더욱 효과적이었다. Ethanol(75%) 추출물을 chloroform, ethyl acetate, butanol 및 water 순으로 분획 하였을 때 ethyl acetate 분획물은 조추출물보다 항산화 효과가 상승하였다. 또 ethyl acetate fraction 600 ppm에 synergist로 ascorbic acid(200ppm)을 palm oil에 첨가 했을 때와 ${\dalta}-toocopherol(200ppm)$을 lard에 첨가했을 때 높은 항산화 상승 효과를 보였다.
