  • We consider the following Dirichlet initial boundary value problem with a gradient absorption and a nonlocal source $$\frac{{\partial}u}{{\partial}t}-div({\mid}{\nabla}u{\mid}^{p-2}{\nabla}u)={\lambda}u^k{\displaystyle\smashmargin{2}{\int\nolimits_{\Omega}}}u^sdx-{\mu}u^l{\mid}{\nabla}u{\mid}^q$$ in a bounded domain Ω ⊂ ℝN, where p > 1, the parameters k, s, l, q, λ > 0 and µ ≥ 0. Firstly, we establish local existence for weak solutions; the aim of this part is to prove a crucial priori estimate on |∇u|. Then, we give appropriate conditions in order to have existence and uniqueness or nonexistence of a global solution in time. Finally, depending on the choices of the initial data, ranges of the coefficients and exponents and measure of the domain, we show that the non-negative global weak solution, when it exists, must extinct after a finite time.

  • The characteristics of absorption and accumulation of inorganic germanium in Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer were examined. In 4-year-old P. ginseng, the germanium content of the field soil increased with increased amounts and frequencies of inorganic germanium application, while chemical components of the soil, such as available phosphate and exchangeable calcium, potassium, and magnesium, decreased with the increased inorganic germanium application. In the 4-year-old P. ginseng, the germanium content was highest in the rhizome and increased in the order of stem, leaf, lateral root, and main root, suggesting that inorganic germanium was absorbed from the root and translocated to the stem and leaf via the rhizome. As for changes in ginsenosides in 4-year-old P. ginseng rhizomes, the contents of ginsenosides $Rb_1$, $Rb_2$, Re, and Rf decreased as the germanium content in soil increased. Ginsenosides $Rb_1$, $Rb_2$, Rc, Re, and Rf in the main root also decreased with increasing germanium content in the main root. The results suggest that inorganic germanium treatment may increase organic germanium in harvested P. ginseng, thus enhancing the medicinal effi cacy of ginseng products.

  • Tuff specimens were thermally treated with predetermined temperatures of 200, 400 and $600^{\circ}C$ to construct specimens simulating weathered tuff rocks. Specific gravity, absorption ratio, elastic wave velocity, uniaxial compressive strength, Brazilian tensile strength, Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio and slake-durability index were measured for pre-heated specimens. Heating of rock specimens entailed the degradation of material properties except for slake-durability index. It was found that correlations among P-wave velocity, uniaxial compressive strength, Brazilian tensile strength, Young's modulus and absorption ratio are high. Regression equations which use the P-wave velocity as an independent variable were presented to evaluate uniaxial compressive strength, Brazilian tensile strength, Young's modulus and absorption ratio.

  • Functional properties such as nitrogen solubility, emulsifying property, foaming property, and water and oil absorption of sesame and perilla protein isolates were determined at pH range of 2-10 and ionic strength of 0-0.5M NaCl. Nitrogen solubility of protein isolates in distilled water showed minimum value at pH6.0 in sesame and at pH 4.0 in perilla and soybean protein isolates, and significantly increased above pH 8.0 in all samples. Addition of 0.1M NaCl solution increased nitrogen solubility, however, decreased in 0.5M NaCl solution. Emulsion activities of all the protein isolates showed minimum value at pH 4.0 and increased in 0.1M NaCl solutions while it was reduced in 0.5M NaCl solutions. The perilla protein isolate showed higher emulsion activity than that of soybean and sesame protein isolates at above pH 6.0. Foaming capacities of sesame and perilla protein isolates were lower than soybean protein isolate and generally all of the samples showed higher profiles in NaCl solutions. The foaming stability of soybean isolate decreased abruptly in 10min, while it was slowly decreased for sesame and perilla isolates during initial 30 min. Oil absorption capacity of perilla protein isolate was higher than that of sesame and soybean protein isolates. Water absorption capacity was similar among the three samples studied.

  • Two metabolism trials were conducted with 24 wether lambs to investigate the effects of feeding crab meal and other protein supplements on N utilization, digestibility and Ca and P balance in sheep. The lambs (avg. BW, 25 kg) were randomly allotted to eight diets in each of two trials. The supplements were: i) none, negative control (NC); ii) soybean meal (SBM), control; iii) supplement based on industrial byproducts of both plant and animal origin (IPA); iv) experimental supplement based on byproducts of animal origin (ESA); v) hydrolyzed supplement No 4. (HESA); vi) commercial supplement based on animal protein (CS), $Pro-Lak^{(R)}$ vii) crab meal (CM); and viii) urea (U). The supplements supplied 33% of the total dietary N (CP, 9.8%; DM basis). Lambs fed the NC diet had lower (p<0.05) DM and OM digestibility. Lower (p<0.05) apparent absorption of N was recorded for the lambs fed the HESA and NC diets. Sheep fed CM had lower Ca absorption compared to SBM. Highest (p<0.05) P absorption was observed for lambs fed CS and CM and lowest for U and NC diets. Sheep fed CM had higher (p<0.05) total VFA concentration (65.7 ${\mu}mol/ml$), compared to those fed ESA, CS, and NC diets (47.3, 49.8, and 49.5 ${\mu}mol/ml$, respectively). Highest (p<0.05) ruminal $NH_3$ N (29.6 mg/dl) was observed in lambs fed the U diet, while those fed the NC diet had the lowest (p<0.05) average value (7.66 mg/dl). Lambs fed the U diet had the highest (p<0.05) blood urea N (10.67 mg/dl). The present study showed that N utilization of diets supplemented with experimental supplements based on feather meal and blood meal; commercial supplement based on animal protein, $Prolak^{(R)}$ supplement based on plant protein and blood meal; and crab meal are comparable with that of soybean meal.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the functional properties such as nitrogen solubility, emulsifying property , foaming capapcity , water and oil absorption of Camellia (Camellia japonica .) seed protein isolate in condition of distilled water and 0.5M NaCl solution at pH 2.0∼10.0. Nitrogen solubility of Camellia protein isolate in distilled water showed the minimum value at pH 4.0 and increased at pH lower or higher than the isoelectric point(pH 4.0). It was 90.0 %at pH 10.0 Nitrogen solubility of 0.5M NaCl solution showed a similar pattern with that of distrille dwater but was higher than that of distilled water except pH 2.0 and pH 10.0. Emulsifying activity of Camellia seed protein islate showed the minimum value at pH 4.0, but was higher at ether value of pH. Emulsifying stability of protein isolate was stable by heat treatment for 30min, at 80℃ and increased in 0.5M NaCl solution more than that of distille dwater. Foaming capacity of Camellia seed protein isolate in distill3ed water showed the minimum value near the isoelectric point, While it changed little at other values of pH. Foaming stability slowly decreased as, but didn't make a significant difference as time was delayed . Oil absorption was 1.4ml per a sample of 1g and water absorption was 0.9ml per a sample of 1g. The former was higher than the latter . The content of total amino acid of Camellia protein isolate was 43.67% and the major total amino acid of Camellia protein isolate was 43.67% and the major total amino acid was in the order of glutamic acid , arginine, aspartic acid, and leucine.

  • In this report, we describe the use of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) immobilized on pH. responsive, cross-linked poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) thin films, as a potential application for pH nanosensors. The methodology is based on the variation in surface plasmon resonance of immobilized AuNPs with changing the interparticle distances, caused by the swelling/deswelling of the pH responsive P4VP polymer films. The change in optical properties of the immobilized AuNPs in response to the pH of surrounding media was investigated by a simple yet powerful tool; UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. The swelling of the P4VP chains at pH 2 causes an increase in the interparticle distances of immobilized AUNPS ($\sim20nm$) and hence leads to a blue shift of 48 nm in their surface plasmon resonance band peak. On the other hand, when the surrounding media was altered from pH 2 to 10, a red shift of absorption maxima was observed. The changes were rapid, and the effect was reversible. This system could prove to be useful in fabricating nanosensors for detecting the pH or pH changes of surrounding aqueous medium.

  • This study done to investigate the hypocholesterolemic effect of ow dietary fiber in a high cholesterol diet in aspect of cholesterol absorption and excretion using Sprague Dawley rats. After feeding diets containing 0.5% cholesterol and 5% tangerine pulp, sea tangle or prickly pear cactus for four weeks, we measured the levels of plasma and liver cholesterol and triglyceride, fecal neutral sterols and fecal radioactivity after ingestion 14(sup)C-cholesterol. We also examined platelet aggregation and histological change in liver tissues in association of hypercholesterolemia. The liver to body weight ratio was significantly(p<0.01) lower in rats fed prickly pear cactus than in other groups. The levels of plasma total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and triglyceride were decreased significantly(p<0.01) in the prickly pear cactus group compared with the control, while there was no difference in the liver levels of total cholesterol and triglyceride among groups. Fecal corprostanol and cholesterol were significantly(p<0.01) higher groups of control and prickly pear cactus compared to the other two groups. Radioisotope excretion after ingestion of 14(sup)C-cholesterol was higher in the control group than in tangerine pulp group or sea tangle group, with the highest in prickly pear group. Radioisotope excretion was the highest during the 2nd and 3rd days in all groups. Hematocrit and platelet aggregation were decreased in all fiber groups compared to the control, but not statistically different. Microscopic examination showed that cholesterol diet cause a fat accumulation in the liver and prickly pear cactus decreased the fat accumulation. Result indicates that prickly pear cactus has hypocholesterolemic effect by decreasing absorption and increasing excretion of cholesterol, thereby protective effect on fatty liver. Control group fed diet containing high cholesterol and low fiber seems to have a self control system in cholesterol absorption and excretion preventing hypercholesterolemia. • Metoclopramide reacts with ammonium cobaltothiocyanate to form a stable ion pair which has an absorption maximum of 625mm. The reaction product was insoluble in water but soluble in most organic solvents. 1,2-Dichlorethane was the best extracting solvent among the several organic solvents tested. Metoclopramide can be determinded not only by visible light spectrophotometry but also indirectly by estimation of cobalt in the organic phase by flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Linear relationship was found between absorbance and concentration in the range of 10$^{-4/}$-10$^{-3}$M by spectrophotometry and 10$^{-5}$-10$^{-4}$M by flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The coefficient of variation by spectrophotometry was 0.9% and that of flameless atomic absorption was 1.8%. There was no interference with excipients, pH, temperature and reaction time. With this method, it is possible to determine accurately metoclopramide and tertiary amines in pharmaceutical preparations.
