  • Sodium hydroxide concentrations were adjusted to 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and 3.5M by dissolution in seawater. The fly ash was hydrothermally reacted with sodium hydroxide solutions (1:8, W:V) at $100^{\circ}C$ under the closed system. X-ray diffractogram proved that Na-P1 type zeolite was produced from bituminous coal fly ash. It is different from the X-ray of artificial zeolite produced by using sodium hydroxide solution dissolving in distilled water. Solid sieve structure was developed well by hydrothermal reaction with the ash and 3.0M sodium hydroxide. However chinks were observed in the structure of the product by 3.5M sodium hydroxide. CEC of the artificial zeolite was $244.5cmol^+\;kg^{-1}$ at 2.0M, 259.8 at 3.0M, 263.4 at 3.0M and 179.8 at 3.5M after 24 hours hydrothermal reaction; Artificial zeolite having high CEC, above $244.5cmol^+\;kg^{-1}$ could produce by using lower concentration of NaOH prepared in seawater than other production methods.

  • To find a recycling method for waste liquid crystal display (LCD) panel glasses, we investigated the synthesis process of zeolite with an ion exchange ability by hydrothermal reaction using waste LCD panel glass as a raw material. It was shown that the waste LCD panel glass can be used as a raw material for the production of zeolites having the ion exchange ability. Following conditions for the synthesis of the zeolite with an ion exchange ability were required : the molar ratio of Si to Al components of the waste LCD glass needs to be 2.0 to 2.8, and the temperature of $100^{\circ}C$ and reaction time of 12 hours are needed for the hydrothermal reaction. Based on the required conditions previously mentioned, the A type zeolite was synthesized when the molar ratio of the Si to Al component was 2.0, and the P type zeolite was produced when the molar ratio was 2.8. The type A zeolite synthesized by using the waste LCD panel glass showed a good ion exchange ability and heavy metal adsorption ability. Also, an excellent ion exchange capacity was observed as the crystal phase grows stably in a cubic phase.

  • A and 2SM-5 type zeoli tic crystal films were synthesized on porous supports from the reaction mixture of 1.9 ${SiO}_2$1.5 $Na_20-Al_2O_3-40$ $H_20$ and $Si0_2$-0.l3 $Na_2O$-52 $H_20$-O.l2 TPAOH composition, respectively. The zeolite films were characterized by XRD and SEM. The 2SM -5 crystals grown on the porous matrix were very closely bound together. It was so difficult to obtain the perfectly intergrown crystals in the case of A-type zeolite and this crystal was transformed into P-type zeolite membrane with a prolonged reaction time. The densely intergrown A type zeolite crystal membrane could be also synthesized by the hydrothermal treatment at 100$^{\cirt}C$ after pressing the reaction mixture without addition of water. The pervaporation performance of the synthesized porous inorganic membranes was investigated for alcohol and water mixtures. A-type zeolite membrane crystallized as a thin film showed the selective \'Jermeability of water from the mixtures through the molecular sieving activity of micropores.

  • In the present study, water vapor adsorption was evaluated at 298.15K for 9 different zeolites having LTA, FAU, CHA, and RHO frameworks, and then effect of framework type, Si/Al molar ratio, and alkali ion type on water up-take was investigated. Zeolites showed water up-takes which were increased in an order of $RHO<CHA{\approx}LTA<FAU$ frameworks. NaY zeolite having FAU framework showed a water up-take of 406 mg/g at p/po=0.5. The up-take was a little larger than that of 13X zeolite with the same framework. Among LTA zeolites, Ca-type 5A zeolite showed the highest water adsorption (282 mg/g at p/po=0.5) which could be explained by the large pore volume. Both CHA zeolite with a Si/Al molar ratio of 2.35 and RHO zeolite with a Si/Al molar ratio of 3.56 showed considerable water up-takes, even though the Si/Al molar ratio was much larger than that of LTA zeolite. In the present study, it is announced that in addition to FAU and LTA zeolites, CHA and RHO zeolites can be a promising dehumidification adsorbent.

  • Ethylbenzene (EB) which has a similar physical properties with p-xylene (pX) was separated from EB/pX mixture by using MFI-type zeolite (TS-1, ZSM-5, and Silicalite-1) coated membranes. The zeolites were synthesized by microwave method to reduce the synthesis time and uniformly formed zeolite particles were coated on the ${\alpha}$-almina tubular support with a thickness of $3-4{\mu}m$. Separation factor and permeation flux of the synthesized zeolite coated membranes were measured to survey the best performance of ethylbenzene separation from different composition of EB/pX mixtures. When the EB/pX mixture of 5:5 molar ratio applied for the separation experiment, it represented the highest separation factor. We also have studied about the effect of the atomic composition of zeolites on the separation performance within the temperature range from 160 to $220^{\circ}C$. TS-1 showed the highest permeation flux of $1,666mol/m^{2*}s^*Pa$ and Silicate-1 showed the highest separation factor of 1.73 at $200^{\circ}C$ respectively.

  • The mechanism of hydrothermally synthesizing Na-A zeolite from siliceous mudstone at a $Na_2O/SiO_2$ ratio of 0.6, a $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ 2.0 and a $H_2O/Na_2O$ 119 has been observed by IR, DTA, XRD and SEM. This mudstone is a tertiary periodic sedimentary rock and widely spreads around the Pohang area. In the early hydrothermal synthesis at $80^{\circ}C$ in an autoclave, sodium silicate and sodium aluminate were found to be preferentially reacted to generate Na-A type zeolite. Gibbsite and bayerite were also formed due to the presence of extra aluminum oxide in the feedstock. As reaction time in-creased up to 50 h, residual sodium aluminatewas reacted with siliceous mudstone, causing the Na-A zeolite crystal to grow and the hydroxylsodalite to generate. Therefore, in the $14{\sim}50\;h$ synthetic time, Na-A zeolite and hydroxylsodalite were formed. Also, if reaction time passed over 50 h, a part of the Na-A zeolite was finally redissolved and reacted with hydroxylsodalite to synthesize Na-P zeolite, generating porous surface of Na-A zeolite and disappearing hydroxylsodalite.

  • The adsorption characteristics of four pesticides (phosphamidon, fenitrothion, triadimefon, and diniconazole) on natural clinoptilolite (CLIN) and three synthetic zeolites were investigated. The synthetic zeolites included faujasite (FAUF) synthesized from coal fly ash; the mixture of FAU and Na-P1 (FAU + Na-P1)SF synthesized using Jeju scoria and coal fly ash at the ratio of 1.5 by weight; and waste fluid catalytic cracking catalyst (FCCW). The distribution coefficient, KD and the Freundlich constant, KF decreased in the following sequence: FCCW > FAUF > (FAU + Na-P1)SF > CLIN among the zeolites and diniconazole>fenitrothion> triadimefon> phosphamidon among the pesticides. The pesticide adsorptivity increased with increasing temperature for FAUF, (FAU+Na-P1)SF and FCCW, however, it decreased for CLIN, regardless of the type of pesticide. The adsorptivity of pesticides was independent of pH for phosphamidon, fenitrothion and triadimefon, whereas it decreased with increasing pH for diniconazole, regardless of zeolite type.

  • This study was performed to synthesize Na-A type zeolite with melting slag from the Mapo incineration site and recycle the zeolite as an environmental remediation agent. The melting slag used had a favorable composition containing 26.6% $SiO_2$, 10.9% $Al_2O_3$ and 2.7% $Na_2O$ for zeolite synthesis although there were high contents of iron oxides, including 19.6% $Fe_2O_3$ and 18.9% FeO, which had been used as a flux for the melting. It was confirmed that the Na-A type zeolite could be successfully synthesized at $80^{\circ}C$ and $SiO_2/Al_2O_3\;=\;0.80{\sim}1.96$. The cation exchange capacities (CEC) of the zeolites was determined to be about 220 cmol/kg leveled off at the synthetic time more than 10hrs. The adsorption capacities of zeolite to heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Mn and Pb) were high except for As arid Cr. It was also confirmed through the Eh and pH analysis that As and Cr existed in the forms of $HAsO_4^{2-}$ and $CrO_4^{2-}$. The low absorption rates of zeolite for As and Cr are attributed to the fact that the pore size ($4\;{\AA}$) of Na-A type is smaller than those of $HAsO_4^{2-}$ and $CrO_4^{2-}$ ions ($4\;{\AA}$ ionic radii and $8\;{\AA}$ diameter).

  • The production of CO-free hydrogen streams for feeding PEM-Fuel Cells using catalytic zeolite membrane reactors was analysed by means of selective oxidation. Tubular FAU (Na-Y) zeolite membranes, prepared by a secondary growth method and Pt-loaded, were used in a flow-through MR configuration. The catalytic tests were carried out at $200^{\circ}C$ and at different pressures with a simulated dry reformate shifted gas mixture ($H_2$ ca. 60%, CO 1 %, plus $O_2,\;N_2,\;CO_2$). The operative $O_2/CO$ stoichiometric equivalent feed ratio was ${\lambda}= 2$. These catalytic tests, reducing the CO concentration down to $10{\sim}50$ ppm, verified the possibility of MR integration after using a low temperature water-gas shift unit of a fuel processor to convert hydrocarbons into hydrogen-rich gas.

  • Objective: In this study effects of three types of beddings on broiler leg health and bone biomechanics were evaluated. Methods: A total of 504 male chicks (Ross 308) were randomly placed on three beddings (4 replicates/group; 42 birds/pen), zeolite-added litter (ZL), plastic-grid flooring (PF), and wood shavings (WS). On day 42, chickens were weighed, slaughtered, and samples (bone, muscle, and drumstick) were collected. Bones were subjected to leg health tests, morphometric measurements, biomechanical testing, and ash analysis. Results: Broilers in PF and WS groups showed higher live weight than the ZL group (p<0.001), and the incidence of tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) and varus valgus deformity due to distal bending was significantly higher in PF (p<0.001). Multinomial logistic regression showed that bedding has a significant (p = 0.038) contribution toward the development of TD. Tibial strength (p = 0.040), drumstick width (p = 0.001), and total femur and epiphyseal ash contents (p = 0.044, 0.016) were higher in the ZL group. Chicken live weight was correlated with tibial length and weight (r = 0.762, 0.725). Conclusion: Flooring and the type of bedding material directly affect broiler bone length, strength and leg health. Plastic bedding improves the slaughter weight of chickens on the expense of leg deformities, and zeolite litter improves leg health and bone strength.
