  • The crystal structures of sparteinium tetrachlorocuprate monohydrate $[(C_{15}H_{28}N_2)CuCl_4{\cdot}H_2O]$, 1 and sparteinium tetrabromocuprate monohydrate $[(C_{15}H_{28}N_2)CBr_4{\cdot}H_2O]$, 2, were determined. The structures of 1 [orthorhombic, $P2_12_12_1$, a = 8.3080(10) ${\AA}$, b = 14.6797(19) ${\AA}$ and c = 16.4731(17) ${\AA}$], and 2 [orthorhombic, $P2_12_12_1$, a = 8.4769(7) ${\AA}$, b = 15.166(3) ${\AA}$ and c = 16.679(3) ${\AA}$], are composed of a doubly protonated sparteinium cation, $[C_{15}H_{28}N_2]^{2+}$, a discrete $CuX_4^{2-}$ anion $(X=Cl^-\;or\;Br^-)$, and one water molecule. These monomeric compounds are stabilized through various types of hydrogen bonding interaction in their packing structures. Crystal 2 exhibits weak anti-ferromagnetism (J = -3.24 $cm^{-1}$) as opposed to the magnetically isolated paramagnetism observed for 1. The results of comparative magneto-structural investigations of 1 and 2 suggest that the pathway for the weak anti-ferromagnetic super-exchange in 2 might be through a Cu-Br${\cdots}$Br-Cu contact.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of casein phosphopeptide amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) on the shear bond strength (SBS) of brackets bonded to non-demineralized teeth with either phosphoric acid etching or self-etching primer. Methods: Sixty human premolars were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 treatment groups (n = 15 each): phosphoric acid etching (group 1); self-etching primer (group 2); CPP-ACP for 2 weeks + phosphoric acid etching (group 3), and CPP-ACP for 2 weeks + self-etching primer (group 4). After bonding of the maxillary premolar metal brackets, specimens were subjected to shear forces in a testing machine. Scanning electron microscopy was used to observe etching patterns on the enamel surfaces of all teeth. A 2-way analysis of variance was used to test for effects of CPP-ACP and etching system on SBS. Results: Significantly higher mean SBSs were observed in groups subjected to phosphoric acid etching (i.e., groups 1 and 3; p < 0.05). On the other hand, SBSs did not appear to be influenced by CPP-ACP (i.e., groups 3 and 4; p > 0.05). We observed a uniform and clear etched pattern on the enamel surface of the phosphoric acid etching groups. Conclusions: CPP-ACP does not significantly affect the SBS of orthodontic brackets bonded to non-demineralized teeth, regardless of which adhesive method is used to bond the brackets.

  • PURPOSE. To evaluate the effects of hydrofluoric acid etching and Er,Cr:YSGG laser irradiation on the shear bond strength of resin cement to lithium disilicate ceramic. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Fifty-five ceramic blocks ($5mm{\times}5mm{\times}2mm$) were fabricated and embedded in acrylic resin. Their surfaces were finished with 1000-grit silicon carbide paper. The blocks were assigned to five groups: 1) 9.5% hydrofluoric-acid etching for 60 s; 2-4), 1.5-, 2.5-, and 6-W Er,Cr:YSGG laser applications for 60 seconds, respectively; and 5) no treatment (control). One specimen from each group was examined using scanning electron microscopy. Ceramic primer (Rely X ceramic primer) and adhesive (Adper Single Bond) were applied to the ceramic surfaces, followed by resin cement to bond the composite cylinders, and light curing. Bonded specimens were stored in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. Shear bond strengths were determined by a universal testing machine at 1 mm/min crosshead speed. Data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U-tests (${\alpha}$=0.05). RESULTS. Adhesion was significantly stronger in Group 2 ($3.88{\pm}1.94$ MPa) and Group 3 ($3.65{\pm}1.87$ MPa) than in Control group ($1.95{\pm}1.06$ MPa), in which bonding values were lowest (P<.01). No significant difference was observed between Group 4 ($3.59{\pm}1.19$ MPa) and Control group. Shear bond strength was highest in Group 1 ($8.42{\pm}1.86$ MPa; P<.01). CONCLUSION. Er,Cr:YSGG laser irradiation at 1.5 and 2.5 W increased shear bond strengths between ceramic and resin cement compared with untreated ceramic surfaces. Irradiation at 6 W may not be an efficient ceramic surface treatment technique.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the possible efficacy of Nd-YAG laser as a dentin conditioner by observing the laser irradiation dentin surface under scanning electron micrograph and measuring shear bond strength of restored light-cured glass ionomer mold. Fifty intact premolars were prepared for shear bond strength tests. The teeth were randomly divided into five groups as follows; Group I. no treatment Group II. 10% poly acrylic acid, 20 sec Group III. laser treatment 2 w, 20 Hz, 2 sec Group IV. laser treatment 2 w, 20 Hz, 5 sec Group V. laser treatment 2 w, 20 Hz, 10 sec Samples of each group were restored with light-cured glass ionomer cement after dentin conditioning and then measuring the shear bond strength of each specimen were measured using universal testing machine. Additional ten premolars were prepared for SEM analysis The result from the this study can be summarized as follows. 1. Shear bond strength of polyacrylic acid-treated group (II) was significantly higher than other groups (p<0.05). 2. No statistically significant difference could be found between three laser-treated groups (III, IV, V) in shear bond strength(p>0.05) 3. According to the result of observation under SEM, Polyacrylic acid was shown to have removed the smear layer effectively and opened the dentinal tubules, whereas the laser has produced the irregular surface mainly composed of melted and fused structure. The microcracks found in laser-treated groups increased in number with irradiation time and formed the regular mesh-type in 10 sec-irradiation group. 4. The ultrastructural change of dentin surface created by laser irradiation was found to the improper for bonding of the glass ionomer restorative materials. And the lower shear bond strength of laser irradiated group might have been due to the failure to form the suit able dentin surface for the glass ionomer to penetrated into and form the proper micromechanical retention.

  • The crystal structure of piperidinothiosemicarbazide, $C_6H_{13}N_3S$, has been determined by single crystal X-ray analysis. The space group is P21/c with four molecules in the unit cell of dimensions $a=14.68{\pm}0.04,\;b=4.59{\pm}0.02,\;c=12.92{\pm}0.04{\AA}\;and\;{\beta}=109.4{\pm}0.2^{\circ}$. Three-dimensional photographic intensities were estimated visually. The structure has been solved by an interpretation of a Patterson synthesis and refined by block-diagonal least-squares methods to give a final R value of 0.14 for 378 observed independent reflections. There are two independent hydrogen bonds in the structure. One of them is of the type N-H${\ldots}$S with the length 3.28 and $3.39{\AA}$, and another is of the type N-H${\ldots}$N with the length $3.03{\AA}$. Apart from the hydrogen bonding system the molecules are held together in the crystal by van der Waals forces.

  • The monolayer characteristics of phosphate amphiphiles with azobenzene at air/water interface were studied by the measurment of $\pi-A$ curves and absorption spectra. Immediately after being spread on the water surface, these amphiphiles having strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions showed the typical absorption spectra which resulted from domain formation. But the aggregated domains could be controlled by changing the subphase conditions (adding bulky salt and rasing pH). Addition of metal ions in subphase changes the molecular orientation of monolayer. As the metal ion charge increases ($1\leq2$ < 3 < 4 valence), the absorption maximum (310nm) of the amphiphile with azobenzene shifts to a longer wavelength (350nm) which means that the orientation of the amphiphile is tilted. These results suggest that the molecular orientation, and furthermore the aggregation state of monolayer can be possibly controlled by the interaction of metal ions with different charge types.

  • With the aim to obtain $TiO_2$ films with an increased photorespones and absorbance in the visible region of the solar spectrum, the direct oxidation of titanium alloys were performed. In this study, $Ti-Ga_2O_3$ alloy was prepared by mixing, pressing and arc melting of appropriate amounts of titanium and $Ga_2O_3$ powder. Electrochemical measurements were performed in three electrode cell using electrolyte of 1M NaOH solution. The oxide films on $Ti-Ga_2O_3$ alloy was composed of $Ti_2O$, TiO, $TiO_2$, $Ga_2TiO_5$. The free energy efficiency (${\eta}e$) of $Ti-Ga_2O_3$ oxide films had 0.8~1.3 % and were increased with the increase of $Ga_2O_3$ content up to 10wt %. The onset potential ($V_{on}$) had -0.8V~0.9V ranges and were shifted to anodic direction with the increase of $Ga_2O_3$ content. The spectral response of Ti-$Ga_2O_3$ oxides were similar to the response of the $TiO_2$ and their $E_g$ were observed to 2.90~3.0eV. Variations of onset potential($V_{on}$) associated with electrolyte pH were -59mV/pH. This probably reflects the nature of the bonding of $OH^-$ ion to the $TiO_2$ surface, a common phenomena in the transition-metal oxides.

  • Objectives: This study investigated the effect of continuous application of 10-methacryloyloxydecyldihydrogen phosphate (MDP)-containing primer and luting resin cement on bond strength to tribochemical silica-coated yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP). Materials and Methods: Forty bovine teeth and Y-TZP specimens were prepared. The dentin specimens were embedded in molds, with one side of the dentin exposed for cementation with the zirconia specimen. The Y-TZP specimen was prepared in the form of a cylinder with a diameter of 3 mm and a height of 10 mm. The bonding surface of the Y-TZP specimen was sandblasted with silica-coated aluminium oxide particles. The forty tribochemical silica-coated Y-TZP specimens were cemented to the bovine dentin (4 groups; n = 10) with either an MDP-free primer or an MDP-containing primer and either an MDP-free resin cement or an MDP-containing resin cement. After a shear bond strength (SBS) test, the data were analyzed using 1-way analysis of variance and the Tukey test (${\alpha}=0.05$). Results: The group with MDP-free primer and resin cement showed significantly lower SBS values than the MDP-containing groups (p < 0.05). Among the MDP-containing groups, the group with MDP-containing primer and resin cement showed significantly higher SBS values than the other groups (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The combination of MDP-containing primer and luting cement following tribochemical silica coating to Y-TZP was the best choice among the alternatives tested in this study.

  • Capacitive pressure sensor for low pressure measurements has been fabricated by using $n^{+}$ epitaxial layer electrochemical etching stop and glass-to-silicon electrostatic bonding technique. The sensor had hybrid configuration of a sensor chip, which consists of sensor capacitor and reference capacitor, and two output signal detection IC chips. A fabricated sensor, with a $1.0{\times}1.0 mm^{2}$ square size and a $10{\mu}m$ thick flat diaphragm, showed a 7.1 pF zero pressure capacitance, and 5.2 % F.S, sensitivity in 10 KPa pressure range. By using a capacitance to voltage converter, the thermal zero shift of 0.051 %F.S./$^{\circ}C$ and the thermal sensitivity shift of 0.12 %F.S./$^{\circ}C$ for temperature range of $5{\sim}45^{\circ}C$ were obtained.
