  • In this paper, a superposed discharge type ozonizer(SDO) has been designed and manufactured. SDO is equipped with three electrodes(central, internal and external electrodes), and it is composed of two gaps. Ozone is generated by overlapping silent discharge, which is respectively came from two gaps. At this time, Internal electrode consists of a mesh type. This paper describes the discharge and ozone generation characteristics of SDO with variation of mesh and discharge wattage.

  • In this paper, an ozonizer, which can supply individual and superposed silent discharge using three-phase voltage has been designed and manufactured. The ozonizer consists of 3 electrodes(Central Electrode, Internal Electrode and External Electrode and External electrode) and 2 gaps (gap between Central Electrode and Internal Electrode, gap between Internal Electrode and External Electrode). Ozone is generated according to voltage supplying method to each electrode by individual silent discharge and three-phase superposed discharge. The characteristics of ozone generation were investigated with variation of discharge power and the flow rate of supplied gas (O2). In case of individual silent discharge, the maximum values of ozone concentration, ozone generation and ozone yield were obtained between internal electrode and external electrode, and its values were 2300[ppm], 570[mg/h] and 745[g/kWh] respectively. Each maximum value was 5039[ppm], 1773[mg/h] and 851[g/kWh] respectively, when three-phase superposed silent discharge was employed. Therefore, characteristics of ozone generation with three-phase voltage are improved compared with single-phase voltage because silent discharge is generated continuously.

  • Styrene-butadiene rubber(SBR) has good abrasion resistance, miscibility, and anti-vibration property. however, it is easily damaged by ozone and swelled by hydrocarbon fluids because of unsaturation part in main chain, that causes loss of visco-elasticity and reduction of product's life cycle. Therefore, object of this study is to cope with this problem. SBR is blended with various proportion of ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer(EPDM), which has excellent ozone and oxygen resistance, to improve physical properties and ozone resistance, and diverse analytical techniques are used to measure morphology, glass transition temperature$(T_g)$, ozone-resistance, degradation temperature, static spring constant, hardness for considering a suitability for anti-vibration industrial product. We found that the blend consisting of SBR 70% and EPDM 30% showed no crack after ozone test and good miscibility between SBR and EPDM from this study.

  • Recently, the application of atmospheric plasma technology in air filtration is increasing. Sterilization by an atmospheric plasma device is very effective. However, ozone gas, which is generated during atmospheric plasma formation, poses a hazard to human health. To reduce the ozone gas during plasma discharge, we fabricated a one-plate hybrid plasma discharge device with a heating element, which can decompose ozone gas effectively by a simple heating action. In this study, we evaluated the plasma discharge characteristics and ozone concentrations with various Ar flow rates and temperatures. With increasing Ar gas flow rate, the ozone concentration and spectrum intensity increased till an Ar gas flow rate of 60 sccm, and decreased thereafter. When discharged in high temperature, the ozone concentration and spectrum intensity decreased. Further, to evaluate the state of the treated surface under various plasma discharge and heating conditions, we measured the variation in the contact angles on the surface. Regardless of the temperature, the contact angle increased with increasing discharge voltage. However, the contact angle increased when discharged at high temperature.

  • Variability in vertical ozone and meteorological profiles was measured by 2Z electrochemical concentration cells (ECC) ozonesonde at Bangyi in Seoul ($37.52^{\circ}N$, $127.13^{\circ}E$) during June $6{\sim}9$, 2003 in odor to identify the vertical distribution of ozone and its relationship with the lower-atmospheric structure resulted in the high ozone concentrations near the surface. The eight profiles obtained in the early morning and the late afternoon during the study period clearly showed that the substantial change of ozone concentrations in lower atmosphere(${\sim}5\;km$), indicating that it is tightly coupled to the variation of the planetary boundary layer (PBL) structure as well as the background synoptic flow. All profiles observed early in the morning showed very low ozone concentrations near the surface with strong vertical gradients in the nocturnal stable boundary layer due to the photochemical ozone loss caused by surface NO titration under very weak vertical mixing. On the other hand, relatively uniform ozone profiles in the developed mixing layer and the ozone peaks in the upper PBL, were observed in the late afternoon. It was noted that a significant increase in ozone concentrations in the lower atmosphere occurred with the corresponding decrease of the mixing height in the late afternoon on June 8. Ozone in upper layer did not vertically vary much compared to that in PBL but changed significantly on June 6 that was closely associated with the variation of synoptic flows. Interestingly, heavily polluted ozone layers aloft (a maximum value of 115 ppb around 2 km) were formed early in the morning on 6 through 7 June under dominant westerly synoptic flows. This indicates the effects of the transport of pollutants on regional scale and consequently can give a rise to increase the surface ozone concentration by downward mixing processes enhanced in the afternoon.

  • This study was performed to estimate the ozonation characteristics of phenol wastewater with increasing pH in the continuous packed column reactor (PCR) and the bubble column reactor (BCR). Among various influencing factors that affect phenol on decomposition through the ozonation, pH was chosen as reaction parameter. Upon increasing pH from 3 to 9, the phenol removal efficiency in PCR was improved approximately by 17% while in BCR approximately by 19.2%. The improvements in the phenol removal efficiency by increasing pH caused the enhancements in ozone utilization efficiency reaching almost 100% in PCR at pH 9. In conclusions, ozone has latent power for phenol wastewater treatment, and the performance of PCR was superior to that of BCR in the aspects of phenol removal and ozone utilization efficiency.

  • One-hour average concentrations of ground-level ozone from around 80 monitoring stations in Korea during 1991 to 1993 were analyzed to examine characteristics of the ozone concentration variations. Two types of variations were observed: one was for the Capital area typified by Kwanghwmun, and the other was for the south and east seashore region typified by Tongkwangyang. In the Capital area including Seoul, Inchon, Kyonggi-do and Chunchon, mean daily 1-hout maximum was the highest in June following high monthly averages in spring. But frequent precipitation prevented further rise of daily maximum in July and August even though there were frequent episodes of high concentration exceeding 100ppb. In the south and east seashore region, average concentration was the highest throughout the year, and daily maximum and minimum simultaneously changed owing to small contributions from photochemical reactions. The typical annual variation was spring peak, summer down, and fall rise. Spring peak accompanied an usual observations of background variations at remote sites in the Northern Hemisphere. Riess of average and daily maximum with lower daily minimum in fall were attributable to photochemical reactions.

  • This paper describes the discharge and ozone generation characteristics with variation of the applied voltage, the number of ozonizer, the quantity of flowing material gas. The important conclusions are as follows. The discharge voltage and current values are proportional to the applied voltage. The ozone concentration and generation are proportional to the applied voltage and the number of ozonizer. As the maximum value of ozone concentration and generation of silent discharge type ozonizer using discharge lamp can be obtained 890[ppm] and 59.7[mg/h] respectively.

  • This study was conducted to supply basic informations on development of water treatment process for the ozonation of ammonia depend on pH variation with or without bromide catalysis. The results were as follows: The oxidation rate of ammonia increased depend on pH increase at ozone/bromide process. It was found that overall kinetics was zero order with respect to reaction time and reaction velocity constant of zero order increased depend on pH increase from 4.9 to 9.5 and the equation of linearization was $k_{o}$ = 0.00565 ${\times}$ [pH] + 0.0069 at ozone/bromide process. The denitrification reaction of ammonia was superior as the pH increase in the presence of bromide.
