  • With the construction of the northern line of the East Sea in 2021, expectations for peaceful use of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) are rising. Accordingly, it is necessary to prepare for leisure tourism activities at nearby beaches using the Demilitarized Zone as a security ecological tourism. However, despite the increase in the amount of ultraviolet rays on the surface due to the destruction of the ozone layer, there are no guidelines for UV exposure. In this paper, the amount of ultraviolet reflection on the coast adjacent to the DMZ using remote exploration was measured and analyzed. It is hoped that the presented results will be used as basic data to prepare UV guidelines for leisure tourism activities in nearby areas.

  • The study on the catalytic oxidation of carbon monoxide (CO) to carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) using the noble metals has long been the interest subject and the recent progress in nanoscience provides the opportunity to develop new model systems of catalysts in this field. Of the noble metal catalysts, we selected ruthenium (Ru) as metal catalyst due to its unusual catalytic behavior. The size of colloid Ru NPs was controlled by the concentration of Ru precursor and the final reduction temperatures. For catalytic activity of CO oxidation, it was found that the trend is dependent on the size of Ru NPs. In order to explain this trend, the surface oxide layer surrounding the metal core has been suggested as the catalytically active species through several studies. In this poster, we show the influence of surface oxide on Ru NPs on the catalytic activity of CO oxidation using chemical treatments including oxidation, reduction and UV-Ozone surface treatment. The changes occurring to UV-Ozone surface treatment will be characterized with XPS and SEM. The catalytic activity before and after the chemical modification were measured. We discuss the trend of catalytic activity in light of the formation of core-shell type oxide on nanoparticles surfaces.

  • Organic semiconductors have received tremendous attention for their research because of their tunable electrical and optical properties that can be achieved by changing their molecular structure. However, organic materials are inherently unstable in the presence of oxygen and moisture. Therefore, it is necessary to develop moisture and air stable semiconducting materials that can replace conventional organic semiconductors. In this study, we developed a NiOx thin film through a solution process. The electrical characteristics of the NiOx thin film, depending on the thermal annealing temperature and UV-ozone treatment, were determined by applying them to the hole injection layer of an organic light-emitting diode. A high annealing temperature of 500 ℃ and UV-ozone treatment enhanced the conductivity of the NiOx thin films. The optimized NiOx exhibited beneficial hole injection properties comparable those of 1,4,5,8,9,11-hexaazatriphenylene hexacarbonitrile (HAT-CN), a conventional organic hole injection layer. As a result, both devices exhibited similar power efficiencies and the comparable electroluminescent spectra. We believe that NiOx could be a potential solution which can provide robustness to conventional organic semiconductors.

  • There are increasing evidences of climate change in the Antarctic and Arctic Oceans, especially elevated temperature due to the continuous burning of the fossil fuels and ultraviolet B(UV-B) flux within the ozone hole. Light-dependent, temperature-sensitive, and fast-growing organisms respond to these physical and biogeochemical changes. Polar marine phytoplankton, which are pioneer endemic species and important carbon contributors in the polar waters, are therefore highly suitable biological indicators of such changes. By virtue of light requirement, the primary producers are exposed to extreme seasonal fluctuations in temperature, photosynthetically active radiation, and UV radiation. Local environmental warming and increased UV-B radiation during ozone depletion may have profound effects on the primary producers that are primary carbon producers in the polar water. Small changes in climate temperature and solar radiation may have profound effects on the activity threshold of the polar phytoplanktion. To demonstrate biological response to the environmental changes, standardized representative natural and biological parameters are needed so that replicate samples (including controls) can be taken over extended periods of time. In this paper, we review general characteristics of polar phytoplankton, their environment, environmental changes in the polar waters, the effects on the environmental changes to the polar phytoplankton, and the importance of the polar phytoplankton to understand the global environmental changes. • Concern has grown over a presence of micropollutants in natural water since sulfonamide antibiotic substances such as sulfamethazine, sulfamethoxazole, sulfathiazole have been frequently detected in Nakdong River, Korea. The current work investigates the degradation of the three sulfonamide substances by using quantum chemistry calculations of density functional theory (DFT) and experimental measurement techniques of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer (UV-VIS). DFT calculations demonstrate that the lowest energy gap between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMO) lies in sulfanilamide functional group of sulfonamide, implying that the sulfanilamide functional group would be the most active site for ozone oxidation. Also, UV-VIS spectra and FT-IR analysis reveal that 260 nm band originated from sulfanilamide group was absent after ozone oxidation, indicating that a functional group of amine (N-H) was removed from sulfanilamide. Both theoretical and experimental observations agree well with each other, demonstrating the DFT calculation tool can be an alternative tool for the prediction of chemical reactions in purification treatment processes.

  • Korea launched Geostationary Environmental Monitoring Satellite (GEMS), a UV/visible spectrometer that measure pollution gases on 18 February 2020. Because satellite retrieval is an ill-posed inverse solving process, the validation with ground-based measurements or other satellite measurements is essential to obtain reliable products. For this purpose, satellite-based OMI and OMPS total column ozone (TCO), and ground-based Pandora TCO in Busan and Seoul were selected for future GEMS validation. First of all, the goal of this study is to validate the ground ozone data using characteristics that satellite data provide coherent ozone measurements on a global basis, although satellite data have a larger error than the ground-based measurements. In the cross validation between Pandora and OMI TCO, we have found abnormal deviation in ozone time series from Pandora #29 observed in Seoul. This shows that it is possible to perform inverse validation of ground data using satellite data. Then OMPS TCO was compared with verified Pandora TCO. Both data shows a correlation coefficient of 0.97, an RMSE of less than 2 DU and the OMPS-Pandora relative mean difference of >4%. The result also shows the OMPS-Pandora relative mean difference with SZA, TCO, cross-track position and season have insignificant dependence on those variables. In addition, we showed that appropriate thresholds depending on the spatial resolution of each satellite sensor are required to eliminate the impact of the cloud on Pandora TCO.

  • Ozonation is a promising process that can effectively reduce the occurrence of micropollutants and pathogen in water. This study investigated the performance of ozonation for the removal of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in secondary effluent from wastewater treatment plant. Moreover, the disinfection potential of ozonation applied for PPCPs removal was discussed. Secondary effluent filtered by sand filter was used for tested water, and ozonation was performed under 2, 4 and 6 mg/L of ozone doses. As a result, 6 mg/L of ozone dose (ozone consumption : 4.4 mg/L) was essential for the effective removal of 37 PPCPs in tested water. Several previous studies showed that the operation condition could achieve approximately 3 log inactivation of total coliform and enteroviruses. On the other hand, dissolved ozone concentration in tested water increased by 1.8 mg/L under 6 mg/L of ozone dose, probably resulting in the increase of bromate formation potential. This result implies that as alternatives to suppress the bromate formation potential during the oxidation of PPCPs by ozone, investigations on advanced oxidation processes are required.

  • This study is to assess the photocatalytic degradation of PET and Nylon 6 films containing nano-sized $TiO_2$ powders of anatase and rutile types. The PET and Nylon 6 films containing six kinds of the nanoparticles were prepared by melt casting method using a heating press machine. Reflectance in visible region and water contact angles of the irradiated PET and Nylon 6 composite films decreased with increasing UV/$O_3$ irradiation. Also the enhanced hydrophilicity has a close relationship with the increase in the Lewis base parameter, which indicates more oxidized polymer surfaces. The photocatalytic degradation of the nanocomposite films increased with increasing $TiO_2$ content and UV energy, which is more significant with the anatase types rather than the rutile types. The amide linkages in the Nylon 6 seemed to be more susceptible to the UV light compared to the ester groups in the PET, particularly in the presence of the $TiO_2$ photocatalysts. The photoscission and photodegradation of the polymers in the composites produced more degraded structure assisted by the photocatalytic activity of the $TiO_2$ nanoparticles. Also the composite films can bleach the methylene blue dyes more easily under the UV/$O_3$ irradiation, suggesting the photobleaching activity of the $TiO_2$ nanoparticles.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate analytical method for the measurement of carbonyl compounds and to apply method to the measurement of indoor and outdoor concentrations of these compounds at public facilities. For sampling, 2.4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) coated DNPH-Silica cartridges were uwed in this study. DNPH reacts with carbonyl compounds and forms carbonyl hydrazone, The carbonyl hydarzone was eluted from the cartridge with acetonitrile and analyzed by reverse-phase HPLC with UV detection. Possible interference caused by ozone during sampling was eliminated by using KI trap commected in series with the DNPH-Silica cartridge. A number of experimental studies were undertaken to evaluate and validate the analytical method, including collection efficiency, recovery, repeatability, lower limits of detection, and effect of ozone. Indoor and outdoor measurements of carbonyl compounds were simultaneously carried out at 14 public facilities located in Taegu city and Kyungsan city from June to July, 1995. Except for one or two sites, the indoor concentrations were found to be higher than the outdoor concentrations for carbonyl compounds. And the concentrations of carbonyl compounds measured in the morning and afternoon were showed higher than the concentrations measured in the evening.

  • The destruction of synthetic acetic acid wastewater was carried out using UV, $O_3$, $H_2O_2$, $Fe^{2+}$ oxidants in various combinations by the advanced oxidation processes. $UV/H_2O_2$, $UV/H_2O_2/Fe^{2+}$, $O_3$, $O_3/H_2O_2$, $UV/O_3/H_2O_2$, $UV/O_3/H_2O_2/Fe^{2+}$ processes were tested. $UV/H_2O_2/Fe^{2+}$, $O_3/H_2O_2$, $UV/O_3/H_2O_2$, $UV/O_3/H_2O_2/Fe^{2+}$ processes shows the most effective destruction efficiency at low pH (3.5) condition of wastewater, but $UV/H_2O_2$ and $O_3$ processes were observed less than 20%. Destruction efficiency was gradually increased with the reaction time in the $O_3/H_2O_2$ and $UV/O_3/H_2O_2$ processes, in case of the $UV/H_2O_2/Fe^{2+}$ and $UV/O_3/H_2O_2/Fe^{2+}$ processes shows rapid increasing of destruction efficiency within 90 min, then slightly decreasing with time. The destruction efficiencies of $UV/H_2O_2/Fe^{2+}$, $O_3/H_2O_2$, $UV/O_3/H_2O_2$ and $UV/O_3/H_2O_2/Fe^{2+}$ processes were observed 55, 66, 66 and 64%, respectively.
