BACKGROUND: Most of the researches on the dye removal using ozonation have been focused on the removal efficiency. However, the research on their removal characteristics and mechanism according to the reaction time has been still insufficient. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, the effects of initial pH and dye concentration with reaction time on the degradation characteristics of methyl orange (MO) and methylene blue (MB) by ozonation were evaluated. The degradation efficiency of MB by ozonation increased with increasing pH. On the other hand, the degradation efficiency of MO by ozonation did not show a significant difference with varing pH. The both MO and MB by ozonation were decomposed within 30 min irrespective of the dye concentration, but the decomposition rates of dyes were faster at lower initial dye concentration. The decomposition efficiency of total organic carbon (TOC) in each dye solution by ozonation was low, which was found to be effective for partial decomposition such as decolorization rather than complete degradation of the dye. CONCLUSION: Overall, ozonation was an effective method for removing nondegradable dyes. However, it is necessary to study the optimization of dye degradation under various environmental conditions for ozonation.
This research was based on comparing ozonation with combined ozone/ultraviolet oxidation through the methods of reducing THM produced during water treatment. The results were as follows ; 1. The decline of THM concentration was appeared according as ozone dosage increases with ozonation and combined ozone/ultraviolet oxidation. The more effective method was the treatment of irradiating UV then ozonation. In the beginning of reaction the decline rate of THM formation potential was low, I thought it was because that the reaction of ozone and humic acid needed times to be steady state, or that THM formation potential existed according to humic acid. 2. The effect of combined ozone/ultraviolet oxidation when ozone dosage was 4.2mg/L min was almost the same that of ozonation when ozone dosage was 8.6mg/L min. 3. In experiment of TOC decline through ozonation and combined ozone/ultraviolet oxidation, TOC concentration was also dropped according to increasing ozone dosage and the more effective results were showed in treatment of irradiating UV than ozonation. But the similar TOC remove rates were showed in experiment of changing with ozone dosage during combined ozone/ultraviolet oxidation TOC remove rates were low in proportion to the remove rates of THM formation potential, it was considered that humic acid was made low molecule itself though ozonation and ozone/ultraviolet oxidation. Moreover, the high degree of remove efficiency will be get though the treatment of activated carbon of GAC treatment after combined ozone/ultravilet oxidation.

This study investigated the removal characteristics, Microcystin decomposition and generation of by-products when aqueous Microcystis sp. is oxidized by ozone. The concentration of Microcystin (MC) in aqueous solution has been found by HPLC analysis to decrease continuously by ozonation after the initial, abrupt increase. The kinetic constant of the decomposition of MC-RR and -LR were 0.0596 and 0.0243, respectively. This means that removal efficiency of MC-RR by its oxidative decomposition is preferable compared with that of MC-LR. On the other hand, it has been found that the decomposition product, TOC, exhibits the continuous decrease in the concentration by further ozonation, while DOC and UV-254 increase temporarily until 10 minutes before the decrease. Furthermore, the GC/MSD analysis has revealed that the ozonation of Microcystis sp. for 100minutes affords five kinds of aldehydes, six kinds of alcohols, and trans-1, 2-dimethyl-cyclopropane.
Microcystin, stable compounds with circular heptapeptides, is presented inside cyanobacterial cell. So far, over 30 types have been known to exist and microcystin-LR, RR among them are the most potent toxin compound. By this reason, a strong oxidant, ozone was used in this study to remove the microcystins produced by cyanobacteria. Removal efficiency of microcystin at M water treatment plant was also evaluated. Microcystin concentration was determined by protein phosphatase inhibition assay. The results showed that dissolved microcystin in raw water detected in the range of 0.011-0.028 ㎍ Microcystin-RR equivalent/l. Above 98% of microcystin was removed through overall treatment system. Therefore, the water treatability of M treatment plant seemed to be excellent. Removal efficiency of microcystin according to unit process varied as characteristics of raw water such as DOC, UV/sub 254/ and turbidity. Removal efficiency of microcystin by ozonation was investigated in laboratory according to contact time and ozone dose. Dissolved microcystin was increased by twice fold according to ozone contact time, but increased by fifth fold according to ozone dose. So, changing of ozone dose more affected microcystin release than changing of ozone contact time. Behavior of microcystin by ozonation was similar to that of DOC, and residual ozone concentration gave influence to removal ratio of microcystin. In conclusion, single ozone treatment wasn't effective on microcystin removal in case of water containing a lot of cells. Therefore, it's more effective to use ozonation process after the removal of cyanobacterial cells in advance.
To obtain design and operating parameters for advanced water facilities, pilot test consisted of ozonation and GAC filtration was conducted at midstream of Nakdong River. Even though the concentrations were very low, 62 chemicals were detected above $0.005{\mu}g/L$ in raw water. In the preozonation, natural organic matters which could produce THMs and organics such as phenols and amines were effectively removed. The performance of TOC removal of GAC filtration with ozonation was better than GAC filtration alone and adsorption capacity of GAC adsorbers were ranged 3~6mg-TOC/g-carbon. And also the life of GAC adsorber for removing TOC was predicted more than 1 years if ozonation is introduced. This indicates that biological degradation of organics happened in GAC filters. Most organics detected at ppt level were removed below detection limit by GAC filtration with ozonation. These results show that ozonation and GAC filtration are the reliable and safe process for organic contaminants and chlorinated byproducts control at Nakdong River.
In this study, GAC adsorption, ozonation and $O_3/GAC$ hybrid processes were investigated for treatment of humic acid. The degradation characteristics and efficiencies of humic acid in each process were evaluated through pH variation, $UV_{254}$ decrease, DOC removal, change of molecular size distribution and by-products formation. DOC removal rate in $O_3/GAC$ hybrid process (80%) was higher than arithmetic sum of ozonation (38%) and GAC adsorption process (19%) by synergism. $UV_{254}$ decrease rate of humic acid was also the highest than any other processes when treated in $O_3/GAC$ hybrid process. Molecular size distribution was not significantly changed in the GAC adsorption process. Main distribution of molecular size of humic acid was converted from 3 k~30 kDa into 0.5 k~3 kDa in ozonation. But the most of large molecular sizes of humic acid converted into small molecules(smaller than 0.5 kDa) in $O_3/GAC$ hybrid process. Quantities of formaldehyde and glyoxal formed in $O_3/GAC$ hybrid process were less than the ones in ozonation.
This study was performed to delineate the removal phenol in solutions using of ozone, ozone/$H_2O_2$ and ozone/GAC. The disinfection by-product of phenol by ozonation, hydroquinone, was analyzed and it's control process was investigated. The followings are the conclusions that were derived from this study. 1. The removal efficiency of phenol by ozonation was 58.37%, 48.34%, 42.15%, and 35.41% which the initial concentration of phenol was 5 mg/l, 10 mg/l, 15 mg/l, and 20 mg/l, respectively. 2. The removal efficiency of phenol by ozonation was 42.95% at pH 4.0 and 69.39% at pH 10, respectively. The removal efficiencies were gradually increased, as pH values were increased. 3. With the ozone/$H_2O_2$ combined system, the removal efficiency of phenol was 72.87%. It showed a more complete degradation of phenol with ozone/$H_2O_2$ compared with ozone alone. 4. When ozonation was followed by filtration on GAC, phenol was completely removed. 5. Oxidation, if carried to completion, truly destroys the organic compounds, converting them to carbon dioxide. Unless reaction completely processed, disinfection by-products would be produced. To remove them, ozone/GAC treatment was used. The results showed that disinfection by-product of phenol by ozonation, hydroquinone, was completely removed. These results suggested that ozone/GAC should also be an appropriate way to remove phenol and its by-product.
The purpose of this study was to find out the effect of oxidation by-products for the formation of haloacetic acid (HAA) during ozonation. The phenol was used as a model precursor of HAA, and its oxidation by-products, such as hydroquinone, catechol, glyoxal, glyoxylic acid and oxalic acid were investigated to find out how much HAA formation potential (HAAFP) they have. As the result, among the phenol and its oxidation by-products, the highest reactivity with chlorine was found from the phenol, showing the highest HAAFP. Even though the tested by-products had a lower HAAFP than phenol, it was confirmed that all of them can act as the precursor of HAA. From the ozonation of phenol-containing water, it was found that the efficiency of ozone in controlling of HAAs can be reduced due to the oxidation by-products. In addition, the ozonation of HAAFP was performed under the both pH conditions (acid and base), and the result indicates that OH radical play a important role to decrease HAAFP.
This study demonstrates the oxidative degradation of pharmaceutical compounds during ozonation of surface waters in Ulsan. Diclofenac, carbamazepine, bezafibrate, and ibuprofen were selected as surrogate pharmaceutical compounds, and ozonation experiments were performed using raw waters collected from the Sayeon Dam and the Hoeya Dam in Ulsan. Diclofenac and carbamazepine which have high reactivity with molecular ozone showed higher removal efficiencies than bezafibrate and ibuprofen during ozonation. The addition of tert-butanol, a hydroxyl radical scavenger, increased the removal efficiencies of diclofenac and carbamazepine by increasing the ozone exposure. However, the oxidation of bezafibrate and ibuprofen was inhibited by the presence of tert-butanol due to the suppression of the exposure to hydroxyl radical. The elimination of the selected pharmaceuticals could be successfully predicted by the kinetic model base on the $R_{ct}$ concept. Depending on the experimental condition, $R_{ct}$ values were determined to be $(1.54{\sim}3.32){\times}10^{-7}$ and $(1.19{\sim}3.04){\times}10^{-7}$ for the Sayeon Dam and the Hoeya Dam waters, respectively. Relatively high $R_{ct}$ values indicate that the conversion of $O_3$ into $^{\cdot}OH$ is more pronounced for surface waters in Ulsan compared to other water sources.
In order to evaluate the optimum operation condition of ozonation to minimize bromate formation, based on the NOM characteristics of raw waters, the pathway of bromate formation by ozonation in domestic raw waters was investigated. Considering the bromate formation reactions, the fractions of bromate formation from bromide by OH radical and molecular ozone were calculated with measured values of ozone decay rate ($k_c$) and Rct. The results showed that molecular ozone is more important role in the formation of bromate in domestic raw waters than OH radical. The ratio of bromide oxidation reaction by molecular ozone ranged 73~88%. Fractions of $HOBr/OBr^-$ reaction with both molecular ozone and OH radical were also determined. OH radical reaction with $HOBr/OBr^-$ was dominant. The differential equations based on the stoichiometry of bromate formation were established to predict the formation rate of bromate by ozonation. The results shows good correlation with experimental results.
