  • This study reports the discovery of two oxytrichid ciliates, Cyrtohymena primicirrata (Berger and Foissner, 1987) and Oxytricha granulifera Foissner and Adam, 1983, in Jeju Island, Korea. The morphology of the two species was studied using live observation and protargol impregnation. These species are described as follows: Cyrtohymena primicirrata has a body size in live specimens $90-140{\times}40-60{\mu}m$, length : width ratio 2.3 : 1 on average; elongated and slender obovate in outline of body. Cortical granules are shiny yellow on the ventral and dorsal side. Adoral zone of membranelles (AZM) is covering about 48% of the cell with about 38 adoral membranelles. Arrangement of undulating membranes is ordinary Cyrtohymena pattern. Dorsal kineties is six rows with $5{\mu}m$ long bristles. Oxytricha granulifera has a body size in live specimens $90-115{\times}25-38{\mu}m$, length : width ratio 3.31 on average; elongated ellipsoidal in outline of body. Cortical granules are colorless on the ventral and dorsal side. AZM is covering 28% of the cell length in vivo with about 24 adoral membranelles. Arrangement of undulating membranes is Oxytricha pattern. Dorsal kineties is five rows with about $3{\mu}m$ long dorsal bristles.

  • We identified two soil stichotrichs, Eschaneustyla lugeri Foissner, Agatha & Berger, 2002 and Oxytricha auripunctata Blatterer & Foissner, 1988, which were collected from Sarabong, Jeju and Ajoong-ri, Jeonju in Korea, respectively. Eschaneustyla lugeri had the following characteristics: size in vivo $170-230{\mu}m{\times}40-60{\mu}m$; body elongate elliptical and often very narrow in the posterior region, highly flexible; cortical granules present; 48-67 macronuclear nodules; 27-47 frontal cirri; 3-5 buccal cirri; frontoterminal row and rightmost midventral row; transverse cirri absent; 4 dorsal kineties; 4-9 caudal cirri. Oxytricha auripunctata had the following characteristics: size in vivo $75-95{\mu}m{\times}25-35{\mu}m$; body elliptical, both ends moderately narrowly rounded; orange-yellow cortical granules and yellowish crystals; 3-4 transverse cirri; 5 dorsal kineties; 3 caudal cirri. These two ciliates are first reported in Korea. We describe these ciliates based on live observations and protargol-impregnated specimens.

  • Oxytricha multilineata, Mixophrya pantanalensis pantanalensis, and Caudiurostyla sinensis were isolated from soil samples collected from Cheongju-si and Yeoju-si, confirmed as new to South Korea. Oxytricha multilineata was distinguished from other congeners by seven dorsal kineties and dorsal bristles about 15 ㎛ long. Mixophrya pantanalensis pantanalensis was characterized by five to seven lithosomes and six dorsal kineties. Caudiurostyla sinensis was characterized by colorless cortical granules present, 10-14 midventral pairs, 7-9 left and 6-9 right marginal rows and four or five dorsal kineties. We determined the ribosomal DNA sequences (including 18S rDNA, ITS1, 5.8S rDNA, ITS2, and partial 28S rDNA) from above three species. And the genetic distances were compared with their congeners.
