The basic hydrogel lens with addition of N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMA) and N-methyl-N-vinylacetamide (NMV) were manufactured. The optical and physical characteristics of ophthalmic lens were evaluated by measuring water content, oxygen permeability (Dk), refractive index and optical transmittance. The water content & oxygen permeability (Dk) of sample containing Ref., DMA group and NMV group was in the average of 34.48%, 35.54~49.19% & $13.003{\sim}18.468{\times}10^{-11}(cm^2/sec)$($mlO_2/ml{\times}mmHg$) and 36.28~44.95% & $12.270{\sim}16.883{\times}10^{-11}(cm^2/sec)$ ($mlO_2/ml{\times}mmHg$), respectively. And also, refractive index of the sample containing Ref., DMA group and NMV group was in the average of 1.4350, 1.4330~1.4131 and 1.4335~1.4195, respectively. Standard hydrogel monomer containing DMA and NMV was expected to be used usefully as a material for fabricating hydrophilic functional ophthalmic lens.
Corrosion of rebar is one of the major deteriorating mechanisms that affect the durability of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. The increase in CO2 concentration in the atmosphere leads to early carbonation and deterioration due to corrosion in RC structures. In the present study, an attempt has been made to modify the existing carbonation depth prediction empirical model. The modified empirical model is verified from the carbonation data collected from selected RC structures of CSIR-SERC campus, Chennai and carbonation data available from the reported literature on in-situ RC structures. Attempt also made to study the carbonation depth in the laboratory specimens using oxygen permeability index (OPI) test. The carbonation depth measured from RC structures and laboratory specimens are compared with estimated carbonation depth obtained from OPI test data. The modified empirical model shows good correlation with measured carbonation depth from the identified RC structures and the reported RC structures from the literature. The carbonation depth estimated from OPI values for both in-situ and laboratory specimens show lesser percentage of error compared to measured carbonation depth. From the present investigation it can be said that the OPI test is the suitable test method for both new and existing RC structures and laboratory RC specimens.
The valiclity of the simple mathematical model for facilitated transport in a solid state membrane developed previously has been examined againsts the carrier concentration and membrane thick-ness. Membranes are prepared with copolymer of styrene and 4-vinylpyridine as a matrix and Co(salen) as a carrier. 4-Vinylpyridine is incorporated to provide the coordination site for Co(salen) carrier. Oxygen permeability through the facilitated transport membrane is linearly increased with the square of its thick-ness, as predicted by the mathematical model. However, the oxygen permeability does not increase linearly with the carrier concentration. This seems to be due to the deactivation of the carrier by dimerization at high carrier concentrations as well as the reduced chain mobility by coordination of bulky Co(salen) carrier.
We prepared ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH)/graphene oxide (GO) membranes by solution casting method. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that GOs were fully exfoliated in the EVOH/GO membrane. The glass transition temperatures of EVOH were increased by adding GOs into EVOH. The melting temperatures of EVOH/GO composites were decreased by adding GOs into EVOH, indicating that GOs may inhibit the crystallization of EVOH during non-isothermal crystallization. However, the equilibrium melting temperatures of EVOH were not changed by adding GOs into EVOH. The oxygen permeability of the EVOH/GO (0.3 wt%) film was reduced to 63% of that of pure EVOH film, with 84% light transmittance at 550 nm. The EVOH/GO membranes exhibited 100 times better (water vapor)/(oxygen) selectivity performance than pure EVOH membrane.
The research and development of high-performance polymer materials with excellent gas barrier properties has gained considerable attention from the viewpoint of expanding their applications in various fields, including tire automobile parts and the polymer film industry. Natural rubber (NR) has been widely used as a rubber material in real-life, but its application is limited owing to its poor gas barrier properties. In this paper, we study the gas barrier properties of NR, epoxidized natural rubber (ENR), and their blend compositions by using molecular simulation. The results show that ENR-50 has superior oxygen barrier properties than those of NR. Moreover, the oxygen barrier properties of a blend of NR/ENR-50 improve with increasing volume fraction of ENR-50. The trend of improved oxygen barrier properties of NR, ENR-50, and their blend is in good agreement with experimental observations.
The permeability of oxygen and nitrogen was investigated from the polymeric LB films containing imidazole-metal ion complexes and compared with its corresponding cast films on porous membrane filters. The amphiphilic polymer, poly(N- (2-(4-imidazolyl)ethyl)-maleimide-alt-1-octadecene) (IM-O), was synthesized by reaction of poly(maleic anhydride-alt-1-octadecene) with histamine. The IM-O nonolayer showed high stability on Fe (III) ion-containing subphase. The molecular structure in the LB films was investigated by means of FT-IR spectroscopy. The metal ion concentration incorporated into the LB films was determined by means of XPS measurements. The mechanical stability and uniformity of the LB films on porous substrates were indirectly evidenced by SEM observation. The LB and cast films showed more or less higher selectivity toward nitrogen, and high permeability was found to both the oxygen and nitrogen.
As modern society develops, it becomes very complex and diverse, and interests in the convenience of life and the natural environment are gradually increasing. Products used in our daily life are also changing according to the needs of consumers, and food packaging is one of them. In particular, retort packaging materials have been used for the purpose of long-term preservation of contents, but the appearance of products suitable for recent environmental issues has been somewhat delayed. Therefore, in order to develop eco-friendly and human-friendly products by replacing the metals used in the existing retort packaging materials, the possibility of substitution was examined using cellulose nanofibers, a natural material. As a result, it can be seen that all functions can be replaced according to the existing long-term storage characteristics for retort packaging films. In particular, not only oxygen permeability and water vapor permeability, which are one of the most important factors, but also heat resistance, which is heating durability, is evaluated as applicable to commercialization compared to products using metals currently in use.

The paper presents results of an investigation on the permeability characteristics and pore structure of concrete containing different levels of fly ash, silica fume, or blast furnace slag. The total cementitious content was 351kg/㎥, and the water/cementitious materials ratio was 0.55. The porosity and pore structure of representative pastes of the matrix were measured using mercury intrusion porosimetry, and the permeability characteristics of concrete were also determined by water and oxygen permeability, chloride ion penetration. The results show that significant reduction in permeability of concrete containing pozzolanic materials due to formation of a discontinuous macro-pore system which inhibits flow. And, the permeability of concrete and pore structure(capillary porosity or total porosity) shows linear relationship.
Among the main components of PEM fuel cell, the functions of GDL are to transport reactants from the channel to the catalyst and remove reaction products from the catalyst and transport heat from the catalyst to the channels in the flow filed plate. Permeability of GDL is known to make it possible to enhance the gas transport through GDL, devoting to get better performance. In this paper, three dimensional numerical simulation of the fuel cell by the permeability of GDL is presented by using a FLUENT modified to include the electrochemical behavior. Results show that as permeability is higher than $10^{-12}m^2$, gradients of temperature distribution, oxygen molar concentration and current density distribution in MEA were decreased. Although heat generation was increased as high permeability, MEA's temperature was lower than the low permeability of GDL. This seems because that convection was higher affects in mass and heat transfer process than diffusion as permeability of GDL is increases.
Mitochondrial permeability transition has been shown to be involved in neuronal cell death. Mitochondrial monoamine oxidase (MAO)-B is considered to play a part in the progress of nigrostriatal cell death. The present study examined the effect of MAO inhibitors against the toxicity of 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium $(MPP^+)$ in relation to the mitochondrial permeability transition. Chlorgyline (a selective inhibitor of MAO-A), deprenyl (a selective inhibitor of MAO-B) and tranylcypromine (nonselective inhibitor of MAO) all prevented cell viability loss, cytochrome c release, caspase-3 activation, formation of reactive oxygen species and depletion of GSH in differentiated PC12 cells treated with $500\;{\mu}M$$MPP^+$. The MAO inhibitors at $10\;{\mu}M$ revealed a maximal inhibitory effect and beyond this concentration the inhibitory effect declined. On the basis of concentration, the inhibitory potency was tranylcypromine, deprenyl and chlorgyline order. The results suggest that chlorgyline, deprenyl and tranylcypromine attenuate the toxicity of $MPP^+$ against PC12 cells by suppressing the mitochondrial permeability transition that seems to be mediated by oxidative stress.
