  • Flow analyses have been performed to investigate the uniformity of propellant flow through the oxidizer manifold of a 30 tonf full-scaled combustor. Injectors were simulated as porous medium layers of equivalent pressure drops. The uniformity of oxidizer propellant has been analyzed for various diameters of holes in vertical/horizontal distributors and configurations of oxidizer inlet to propose an improved design solution. It has been proven that the mass flow uniformity were improved by adjusting the holes in vertical/horizontal distributors.

  • Flow in the oxidizer manifold of a liquid rocket combustor has been analysed using an open source CFD toolbox, OpenFOAM. The applicability of OpenFOAM to the problems with complex geometries involving porous media zones for simulating the pressure drop induced by the injectors has been evaluated by performing turbulent, incompressible steady-state flow analysis. The usefulness and applicable area of the OpenFOAM as a design evaluation and analysis tool will be confirmed and enlarged by further evaluation with various computational cases representing major physical phenomena in rocket combustion devices.

  • In most cryogenic liquid rocket engines, liquid oxygen manifold and injector are not thermally insulated from room temperature environment fur reducing system complexity and the weight. This feature of cryogenic liquid rocket engine results in the situation that cryogenic liquid oxygen flow is easy to be vaporized especially in the vicinity of the manifold and the injector wall. The research in this paper is focused on two-phase flow phenomena of liquid oxygen in rocket engine. Vapor fraction was estimated by comparing the measured two-phase flow pressure drop in engine manifold and the injector with ideal single phase pressure drop. Heat flux into cryogenic flow is estimated by measuring the wall temperature on the engine manifold to examine boiling characteristics. Suitable correlations for cryogenic two-phase flow were also reviewed to see their applicability. In addition, the effect of vapor generation in liquid rocket engine manifold and injector on engine performance and stability was considered.

  • Experimental studies on determination of the supply leading time of propellants to combustion chamber have been made to stably and efficiently guarantee the ignition process with liquid rocket engine. The propellant used is a Jet A-1 as fuel and a liquid oxygen as oxidizer. Unlike impinging FOOF type of injectors are arranged radially and the designed O/F ratio is 2.34. The present experiment program also includes the stability on the quadlet type of ignitor using the triethylalumimum as an ignition source and injector life tests. Experimental results clarifies that the propellant supply through LOx leading to combustion chamber is proper for stable ignition and combustion processes based on the fuel and oxidizer manifold pressures, combustion chamber pressure, and the variation of flame length from the nozzle exit with lapse time, and shows that the leading supply time of propellants affects the engine performance little. The effect of positioning cooling holes is remarkable to protect the injector face.

  • The ignition characteristics of liquid rocket engine thrust chambers which have been developed by domestic technology were analyzed through hot-firing tests. Thrust chambers used in hot-firing tests have different characteristics in terms of the injector for ignition, film cooling method and the position of the oxidizer inlet. Also, these thrust chambers used their respective startup sequences. Analysis results showed that according to temperature profiles of the oxidizer manifold, low frequency fluctuation was appeared in ignition area. This low frequency fluctuation didn't give rise to violent malfunction of the thrust chamber, but the continuous observation as a concern parameter in the side of interfaces with engine system and launch vehicle should be demanded.

  • Flow analyses have been performed to investigate the uniformity of propellant flow through the fuel and oxidizer manifolds of a full-scaled gas generator for a pump-fed liquid rocket engines. Injectors were simulated as porous medium layers having equivalent pressure drops. The uniformity of propellants has been analyzed for 3 fuel rings and 3 injector head configurations. The mixture ratio distribution at the exit of injectors has been estimated from the mass flow rates of fuel and oxidizer. The best configuration of fuel ring and injection head was selected through these flow analyses.

  • Experimental studies on determination of the supply leading time of propellants to combustion chamber have been made to stably and efficiently guarantee the ignitions process with liquid rocket engine. The propellant used is a Kerosene as fuel and a liquid oxygen as oxidizer. FOOF type of three injectors are set with an angle of 135。 and the combustion chamber pressure is 200psi. • Staged combustion cycle engines are well known to have high combustion efficiencies and specific impulse. In this study, design of mixing head part of combustion chamber for 8tonf class staged combustion cycle rocket engine (ES-08) was performed. Structural stability of the mixing head part of the combustion chamber is very important design factor because it is loaded by high temperature and high pressure of fuel and oxidizer as well as by thrust load simultaneously. Uniformity of flow distributions of the propellants to the injectors is also important factor. First, a basic configuration for the ES-08 mixing head part was designed on the basis of the structural design requirements. And then, the structural analyses were performed on the basic configuration as well as some of reinforced configurations. As the structural analyses results, the most stable configuration was selected for the ES-08 mixing head part. In order to examine the uniformity of the flow distributions of the propellants through the manifold of the mixing head, flow analysis was performed based on the selected configuration. The results of the flow analysis showed that the fuel and the oxidizer were uniformly supplied to the injector.

  • A numerical analysis on the uniformity of propellant injection velocity of KSR-III has been carried out to give design improvements. Injector holes were approximated as porous media with the same pressure drop . The injection velocity is higher at the opposite side of the inlet for both LOX and fuel due to the static pressure rise in the stagnation region. Flow passages at the vertical circular plate in the LOX dome increase the uniformity of LOX injection. Little change was observed in the injection uniformity and pressure drop for the slanted LOX passage. Also provided were the O/ F ratio distributions from the oxidizer/ fuel injection velocity analysis.
