  • Diesel engines are widely used due to superior power and fuel consumption, however there are many challenges in exhaust gas management. Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is the most effective technique for reducing mono-nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions in a diesel engine, in comparison with other catalytic technologies. In addition, the technology has a number of advantages in terms of economic efficiency and implementation. In this study, the effects on the power and exhaust characteristics of diesel engines equipped with EGR systems were investigated. It was found that as the EGR rate increased, horsepower expressed as IHP and BHP decreased. The net effect of the application of EGR was measured at various engine speeds. EGR technology caused decreases in BHP of around 9% during low engine speed and 3.5% during high engine speed. Additionally, NOx emissions reduced as the EGR rate increased, and increased as engine speed increased. However, smoke emissions increased as the EGR rate increased, and decreased as engine speed increased. The optimum operating conditions and ERG rate to simultaneously achieve minimum NOx and smoke emissions were investigate. It was found that as the EGR rate increased, optimal operating speed for minimal NOx and smoke also increased. • Natural gas is a clean fuel that discharges almost no air-contaminating substances. This study examined the simultaneous reduction of $CH_4$ and NOx of NGOC/LNT catalysts for CNG buses related to the improvement of the $de-CH_4/NOx$ performance, focusing mainly on identifying the additive catalysts, loading of the washcoat, stirring time, and types of substrates. The 3wt. % Ni-loaded NGOC generally exhibited superior $CH_4$ reduction performance through $CH_4$ conversion, because Ni is an alkaline, toxic oxide, and exerts a reducing effect on $CH_4$. A excessively small loading resulted in insufficient adsorption capacity of harmful gases, whereasa too high loading of washcoat caused clogging of the substrate cells. In addition, with the economic feasibility of catalysts considered, the appropriate amount of catalyst washcoat loading was estimated to be 124g/L. The NOx conversion rate of the NGOC/LNT catalysts stirred from $200^{\circ}C$ to $550^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours showed 10-15% better performance than the NGOC/LNT catalysts mixed for 2 hours over the entire temperature range. The NGOC/LNT catalysts exhibitedapproximately 20% higher $de-CH_4$ performance on the ceramic substrates than on the metal substrates.

  • A high-throughput electrorefiner has been developed for commercialization use by enhancing the uranium recovery from the reduced metal which is produced from the oxide reduction process. It is necessary to scrap and effectively collect uranium dendrites from the surface of the solid cathode for high yield. When a steel electrode is used as the cathode in the electrorefining process, uranium is deposited and regularly stuck to the steel cathode during electrorefining. The sticking coefficient of a steel cathode is very high. In order to decrease the sticking coefficient of the steel cathode effectively, vibration mode was applied to the electrode in this study. Uranium dendrites were scraped and fell apart from the steel cathode by a vibration force. The vibrational scraping of the steel cathode was compared to the self-scraping of the graphite cathode. Effects of the applied current density and the vibration stroke on the scraping of the uranium dendrites were also investigated.

  • To investigate the effect of V and Sb on the corrosion behavior of Zr- based alloys, corrosion tests were performed on 6 kinds of Zr alloys in an autoclave at $360^{\circ}C$ for 100 days. The transition of the corrosion rate occurred in the sample containing 0.1wt.%V after 10 days but did not occur in the samples containing 0.2wt.%V and 0.4wt.%V. The corrosion resistance of V containing alloys increased with increasing V contents from 0.1 to 0.4wt.% and the alloys containing 0.4wt.%V showed the best corrosion resistance. In the ternary alloys containing 0.1wt.%Sb and 0.4wt.%Sb, the corrosion rate increased significantly from the short exposure time. It was observed that the optimal Sb content for corrosion resistance was 0.2wt.%. The size and volume fraction of precipitates increased with increasing V and Sb contents. The superior corrosion resistance was observed in the Zr alloy having precipitate size of 0.11-0.13$\mu\textrm{m}$. From the result of corrosion behavior and the obserbation of precipitates, the optimal size of the precipitate appear to control the electron conduction in the cathodic reaction and play an important role in maintaining a stable oxide microstructure.

  • In this study, performance evaluation of newly developed technology for the economical and safe removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) coming out from electronic devices washing operation and offensive odor induction materials was made. Metal oxidization catalyst has shown 50% of removal efficiency at the temperature of $220^{\circ}C$. Composite metal oxidization catalyst applied in this study has shown that the actual catalysis has started at the temperature of $100^{\circ}C$. Comprehensive analysis on the catalyst property using Mn-Cu metal oxidization catalyst in the pilot-scale unit was made and the removal efficiency was variable with temperature and space velocity. Full-scale unit developed based on the pilot-scale unit operation has shown 95% of removal efficiency at the temperature of $160^{\circ}C$. Optimum elimination effective rates for the space velocity was found to be $6,000hr^{-1}$. The most appropriate processing treatment range for the inflow concentration of VOCs was between 200 ppm to 4,000 ppm. Catalyst control temperature showed high destruction efficiency at $150{\sim}200^{\circ}C$ degrees Celsius in 90~99%. External heat source was not necessary due to the self-heat reaction incase of VOCs inflow concentration is more than 1,000 ppm. Equipment and fuel costs compared to the conventional RTO/RCO method can be reduced by 50% and 75% respectively. And it was checked when there was poisoning for sulfide and acid gas.

  • The Ag nanoparticles attached $La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}Co_{0.3}Fe_{0.7}O_{3-{\delta}}$ (LSCF) perovskites were prepared by plasma method. The Ag nanoparticles with size of several nanometers deposited from the Ag target were coated on the surface of LSCF powders with size range from 0.2 to 3 ${\mu}m$. The agglomeration of Ag particles annealed at $800^{\circ}C$ under inert gas of Ar were rarely observed. The inter-diffusion between surface Ag and core LSCF is effectively strong to prevent aggregation of Ag nanoparticles. The wave number of FT-IR spectra for LSCF were largely shifted as the concentration of Ag on LSCF up to 2.11 wt.%. The ionic states of irons in LSCF were measured by M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectroscopy. The small amount of $Fe^{4+}$ ions are converted to $Fe^{3+}$ ions after Ag nanopartcles were coated on LSCF.

  • With the Zircaloy-4 tube oxidized in high temperature (1323 K) steam for 5, 10, 30 and 60 minutes, the expanding copper mandrel test was carried out over a temperature range of 673-l173k at $\varepsilon\;=\;3.0\times10^5S\;^1$. The oxidation parameters $(K_i)$ in the present study were linearly proportional to square root of time $(Ki= \delta_{kit})$ and their rate constants ($\delta_{ki}$) are 0.281, 2.82, and 2.313 for weight gain and thickness of Zr02 and $\alpha$(0) layer, respectively. Activation energy for high temperature (873-1073k) plastic deformation of Zircaloy-4 increases from 251 KJ/mol to 323 KJ/mol with increase in oxidation time from 5 minutes to 60 minutes due to the high strengthened Zr02. With the oxide layer thickness [K ; expressed in "Equivalent Cladding Reacted" (ECR,%)] and the yield stress obtained from the mandrel test, an empirical relation was derived as ($\sigma/C)^n=K^mexp$ (Q/RT) with n=6.9, m=5.7, C=0.155, 0.138, 0.051, and 0.046 MPa for Q=251, 258, 316, 323 KJ/mol, respectively.

  • The electrical conductivity and phase stability of $ZrO_2$ doped with $Sc_2O_3$ and $CeO_2$ were investigated in order to search for better solid electrolyte material for solid oxide fuel cell. Present study showed that $ZrO_2$ doped with $Sc_2O_3$ and $CeO_2$ exhibited no phase transition during the heat treatment up to $1350^{Circ}C∼1550^{Circ}C$ and was stable as a cubic phase in whole temperature ranges. The $ZrO_2$ doped with $Sc_2O_3$ and $CeO_2$ showed much higher electrical conductivity than YSZ in the temperature range of $300∼^{Circ}C$ and better long term stability than other sc-$ZrO_2$ based electrolyte that showed the possibility as a strong candidate electrolyte material for intermediate-or low-temperature SOFC.

  • The change of structure and morphology in ( $U_{0.913}$G $d_{0.087}$) $O_2$ during oxidation at 475$^{\circ}C$ and heat treatment at 130$0^{\circ}C$ in air were investigated using XRD, SEM, and EPMA. The ( $U_{0.913}$G $d_{0.087}$) $O_2$ cubic phase converted to ( $U_{0.913}$G $d_{0.087}$)$_3$ $O_{8}$ orthorhombic phase by oxidation at 475$^{\circ}C$ in air. The XRD and EPMA result of the 130$0^{\circ}C$ heat treated powder revealed that ( $U_{0.913}$G $d_{0.087}$)$_3$ $O_{8}$ orthorhombic phase was separated into $U_3$ $O_{8}$ and ( $U_{0.67}$G $d_{0.33}$) $O_{2+}$x/ cubic phase. The weight variations of (U,Gd) $O_2$ with various Gd contents were measured using TGA at the same heat treated condition. The weight variation during the heat treatment of Gd dissolve (U,Gd) $O_2$ in air can be expressed in terms of phase reaction equations related with oxidation and phase separation. Based on these phase reaction, a initial content of Gd dissolved in (U,Gd) $O_2$ can be exactly calculated by measuring the weight change during the heat treatment.

  • Greenhouse gas(GHG) inventories and basic strategies for Jeonbuk regional government were established to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The method to construct GHG inventories of Jeonbuk followed the 'Revised IPCC 1996 Guidelines'which was used for the 'Third National Communication of the Republic of Korea under UNFCCC'. Korean government could use primary energy consumption for the energy industries section in the national GHG inventories. However, regional governments should use secondary energy consumption (included electricity consumption) for the energy industries section for their GHG inventories because they could not control the emission of energy transformation section. In the result of Jeonbuk GHG inventories in 2006, carbon dioxide($CO_2$) emissions from fuel combustion covered 87.1% of total emissions. Methane($CH_4$), carbon dioxide($CO_2$) from other sections, nitrous oxide($N_2O$) and F-gas(HFCs, PFCs, $SF_6$) accounted for 8.1, 2.2, 1.6 and 1.0% of total emissions, respectively. The sectional emission decreased in the order of the energy(88.0%), agriculture(7.6%), waste(2.3%) and industrial processes(2.1%) section. The energy industries section that contained electricity consumption was the most dominant emission source in the energy section. F-gas consumption, rice cultivation and waste incineration were main emission sources in the industrial processes, agriculture and waste section, respectively. In this study, basic directions of each section were established by the results of Jeonbuk GHG inventories in 2006.
