  • Arc-melted Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-4Fe and Ti-(1,2) Si alloys were oxidized at 700, 800, 900 and $1000^{\circ}C$ in air. The oxidation resistance of Ti-4Fe was comparable to that of Ti-6Al-4V, while the oxidation resistance of Ti-(1,2) Si was superior to that of Ti-6Al-4V. Ti-2Si displayed the best oxidation resistance among the four alloys, but failed after oxidation at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 17h. The oxide scale formed on Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-4Fe and Ti-(1,2)Si consisted of ($TiO_2$ and a small amount of $Al_2$$O_3$), ($TiO_2$ and a small amount of dissolved iron), and ($TiO_2$ plus a small concentration of amorphous $SiO_2$), respectively. The oxide grains of the surface scale of the four alloys were generally fine and round.

  • For the purpose of improving the cyclic oxidation resistance of Ni-base superalloy, Inconel 600, aluminide coating methods are studied. The formation rate of aluminide coating layers is measured as a function of time and pack composition to find out the optimum coating condition. The evaluation of cyclic oxidation is established by the change in weight, the microphotography and EPMA of cross sectional area during $200^{\circ}C\;{\leftrightarrow}\;950^{\circ}C\;and\;200^{\circ}C\;{\leftrightarrow}\;1100^{\circ}C$, respectively. The thickness of coating layer and weight gains are parabolic behavior in propotion to time and Al contents. In pack of low aluminum contents, 2 wt%, however, weight gain is decreased when activator, $NH_4Cl$ is higher than 2 wt%. The cyclic oxidation resistance of the coating carried out at 1100$^{\circ}C$ are superior to those of the coating diffusion-treated after pack cementation at 800$^{\circ}C$. Aluminide oxide, which is formed in external scale, is barrier to the cyclic oxidation.

SULFIDATION PROCESSING AND Cr ADDITION TO IMPROVE OXIDATION RESISTANCE OF Ti-Al INTERMETALLIC COMPOUNDS AT ELEVATED TEMPERATURES

  • A novel process is proposed to improve oxidation resistance of Ti-Al intermetallic compounds at elevated temperatures by both Cr addition and pre-sulfidation, where TiAl alloys withlor without Cr addition were sulfidized at 1173K for 86.4ks at a 1.3 Pa sulfur partial pressure in a $H_2-H_2S$ gas mixture. The pre-sulfidation treatment formed a thin Cr-Al alloy layer as well as 7~10 micrometer $TiAl_3$ and $TiAl_2$ layer, due to selective sulfidation of Ti. Oxidation resistance of the pre-sulfidation processed TiAl 4Cr alloy was examined under isothermal and heat cycle conditions between room temperature and 1173K in air. Changes in $TiAl_3$ into $TiAl_2$ and then TiAl phases as well as their effect on oxidation behavior were investigated and compared with the oxidation behavior of the TiAl-4Cr alloy as TiAl and pre-sulfidation processed TiAl aHoys. After oxidation for up to 2.7Ms a protective $Al_2O_3$ scale was formed, and the pre-formed $TiAl_3$ changed into $TiAl_2$ and the $Al_2Cr$ phase changed into a CrAlTi phase between the $Al_2O_3$ scale and $TiAl_2$ layer. The pre-sulfidation processed TiAl-4Cr alloy had very good oxidation resistance for longer times, up to 2.7 Ms, in contrast to those observed for the pre-sulfidation processed TiAl alloy where localized oxidation occurred after 81 Oks and both the TiAl and TiAl-4Cr alloys themselves corroded rapidly from the initial stage of oxidation

산화 방식이 Ag-CdO계 전기접점재료의 수명 특성에 미치는 영향 (A Effect of the Oxidation Process on the Lifetime Properties of Ag-CdO Contact Materials)

  • Contact material is widely used in the field of electrical parts. Ag-CdO has a good wear resistance and stable contact resistance. We studied a lifetime of Ag-CdO material because of getting better properties of Ag-CdO using Post-oxidation. The experimental procedure were melting using high frequency induction, heat treatment, rolling and internal oxidation. And we experimented on difference process, Post-oxidaion. Then we tested a lifetime and analysed. We obtained the optimizing oxidation temperature was $750^{\circ}C$. Using Pre-oxidation, coarse oxide and depleted oxidation layer existed but finer oxides were existed and depleted oxidation layer was not using Post-oxidation. In Post-oxidation, The density was 10 $g/cm^{3}$, the hardness was Hv 80 and the adhesive strength was 9000N. The specimen of Post-oxidation had better lifetime properties than that of Pre-oxidation. We predicted that the lifetime of Post-oxidation specimen is more longer twice than that of Pre-oxidation one.

  • The oxidation behavior of a two-phase(Ti3Al+TiAl) intermetallic compound, Ti-33.8wt%Al, has been in-vestigated in air at 800, 900 and $^1000{\circ}C$. Though the isothermal oxidation behavior followed a parabolic law up to 100$0^{\circ}C$ indicating that protective oxide scales were formed, the cyclic oxidation behavior followed a lin-ear law in the entire temperature range tested because flaky or stratified scales were usually spalled from the surface during cooling. During oxidation at 80$0^{\circ}C$, the alloy showed excellent oxidation resistance because continuous protective Al2O3 films were formed on the outermost surface of the alloy. However, above $900^{\circ}C$, the oxidation resistance of the alloy was decreased gradually because relatively non-protective TiO2 scales as well as some of Al2O3 scales were formed on the outer oxide scale. The oxidation mechanism of the alloy at different temperature was proposed.

  • The STS304 stainless steel was oxidized isothermally and cyclically at temperatures between 1050 and $1200^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr in air. During isothermal oxidation, it displayed good oxidation resistance at $1050^{\circ}C$. However, it suffered from breakaway oxidation above $1100^{\circ}C$, being accompanied with internal oxidation. During cyclic oxidation, it also displayed good oxidation resistance at $1050^{\circ}C$, but it suffered from massive weight loss above $1125^{\circ}C$. The oxide scales formed consisted primarily of $Fe_2O_3$, $Fe_3O_4$ with and without $Cr_2O_3$. They were generally non-adherent.

  • Due to excellent properties such as high specific strength and low density, application of magnesium alloys have been rapidly increased. However, magnesium alloy has a serious problem that is easily oxidized when exposed to high-temperature. For this reason, magnesium alloys have been generally used for SF6 gas such as protective cover gas in casting and melting, but it has been reported that this gas has a serious influence on global warming. Therefore, many researchers have been studied to improve the oxidation resistance of magnesium alloy. It was reported that addition of Be, Ca and CaO in magnesium alloy can improve the oxidation properties. In this study, the possibility of improving the oxidation resistance by adding CaO extracted from oyster shells was investigated. Oyster shells were completely decomposed into CaO and CO2 by annealing. With the addition of CaO, a coexistence region of MgO + CaO was formed in the oxide layer and its thickness was also reduced.

침붕처리한 저탄소강의 알루미늄 확산처리에 관한 연구 (The Aluminizing of Boronized Low Carbon Steel)

  • In order to improve the mechanical properties and the high temperature oxidation resistance, aluminizing was carried out at a temperature range between $850^{\circ}C$ and $1050^{\circ}C$. The pack cementation process was used to produce uniform layer. After each treatment, the microhardness and the characteristics of high temperature oxidation were tested to evaluate the properties of the aluminide layer. The aluminide layer consisted of FeAl above $1000^{\circ}C$, and $Fe_2Al_5$ below $900^{\circ}C$, and the mixed phase of FeAl and $Fe_2Al_5$ between 90$0^{\circ}C$ and $1000^{\circ}C$ in case of the mixture powder consisted of 5%Al+5%$NH_4Cl+90%AL_2O_3$. The microhardness of $Fe_2Al_5$ was obtained much as the twice as that of FeAl. As the aluminizing temperature and time increased, the thickness of aluminide increased. After aluminizing, the high temperature oxidation resistance was remarkably improved. The high temperature oxidation resistance of FeAl was superior to the resistance of high temperature oxidation of $Fe_2Al_5$.

인산 에스테르에 의한 탄소재료의 내산화 증진 효과 (Improvement of Oxidation-resistance of Graphite by Phosphate)

  • 탄소재료의 산화저항성 증진을 위해 Tri-Butyl 인산 에스테르를 함참하였다. 시편은 함침전 초산으로 전처리 한 것과 흑연재 Raw Bulk(Raw)를 함침시켜 비교하므로써 초산 세척의 효과도 아울러 조사하였다. XPS와 FTIR을 사용하여 함침처리 전후의 탄소표면의 특성을 검토한 결과 Tn-butyl phosphale로 함침된 시편(RP)의 표면에는 P-O 그룹 및 -OH Band 등의 친수성이 강한 활성기가 존재하였다. 산세척한 시편을 함침한 탄소재(AP)는 Raw보다 산화게시온도가 약 120$^{\circ}C$ 향상되었고 산화율은 1000$^{\circ}C$에서 30% 감소된 효과를 보였다. 본실험에서 구한 Raw, 초산세척 시편, 초산처리후 함침한 시편들의 Arrbenius Plot으로부터 동일한 값의 기울기를 나타내어 탄소의 산화반응 요인중에 본실험에서 처리한 내산화과정은 탄소표면의 기본적 화학반응변화에 의한 효과로 보여지지 않는다.

STUDIES ON THE HIGH TEMPERATURE PROPERTIES OF DUPLEX-TREATED AISI H13 STEEL

  • In oder to improve the wear resistance as well as oxidation resistance at high temperature a AISI H13 steel was treated by a duplex process of calorizing followed by plasma nitriding. The surface properties of the duplex-treated AISI H13 steel was characterized and compared with those treated by single surface process of calorizing and plasma nitriding, in terms of microstruture, microhardness, wear resistance at $500^{\circ}C$, and the oxidation behaviours at $700^{\circ}C$, Duplex process on H13 steel had created duplex layer of approximately $190\mu\textrm{m}$ on the surface, and surface microhardness was measured to be above 1450Hv(0.1Kgf). There was considerable improvement of the high temperature wear resistance at $500^{\circ}C$ in the duplex-treated steel when both wear volume and weight change due to oxidation were considered. In addition the duplex-treated steel showed an improved high temperature oxidation resistance than the plasma nitrided steel at $700^{\circ}C$.
