For a power grid that has a high wind penetration level, when wind speeds are continuously fluctuating, the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) operation of a variable-speed wind turbine (VSWT) causes the significant output power fluctuation of a VSWT, thereby significantly fluctuating the system frequency. In this paper, an improved power-smoothing scheme of a VSWT is presented that significantly mitigates the frequency fluctuation caused by varying wind speeds. The proposed scheme employs an additional control loop based on the frequency deviation that operates in combination with the MPPT control loop. To improve the power-smoothing capability of a VSWT in the over-frequency section (OFS), the control gain of the additional loop, which is set to be inversely proportional to the rotor speed, is proposed. In contrast, the control gain in the under-frequency section is set to be proportional to the rotor speed to improve the power-smoothing capability while avoiding over-deceleration of the rotor speed of a VSWT. The proposed scheme significantly improves the performance of the power-smoothing capability in the OFS, thereby smoothing the frequency fluctuation. The results clearly demonstrate that the proposed scheme significantly mitigates the frequency fluctuation by employing the different control gain for the OFS under various wind penetration scenarios.

An active frequency doubler monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) for E-band transceiver applications is presented in this letter. This MMIC has been fabricated in a commercial $0.1-{\mu}m$ GaAs pseudomorphic high electron mobility transistor (pHEMT) process on a 2-mil thick substrate wafer. The fabricated MMIC chip has been measured to have a high output power performance of over 13 dBm with a high fundamental leakage suppression of more than 38 dBc in the frequency range of 71 to 86 GHz under an input signal condition of 10 dBm. A microstrip coupled line is used at the output circuit of the doubler section to implement impedance matching and simultaneously enhance the fundamental leakage suppression. The fabricated chip is has a size of $2.5mm{\times}1.2mm$.
Receiver and transmitter monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) multifunction chips (MFCs) for active phased-array antennas for Ka-band satellite communication (SATCOM) terminals have been designed and fabricated using a 0.15-㎛ GaAs pseudomorphic high-electron mobility transistor (pHEMT) process. The MFCs consist of four-channel radio frequency (RF) paths and a 4:1 combiner. Each channel provides several functions such as signal amplification, 6-bit phase shifting, and 5-bit attenuation with a 44-bit serial-to-parallel converter (SPC). RF pads are implemented on the bottom side of the chip to remove the parasitic inductance induced by wire bonding. The area of the fabricated chips is 5.2 mm × 4.2 mm. The receiver chip exhibits a gain of 18 dB and a noise figure of 2.0 dB over a frequency range from 17 GHz to 21 GHz with a low direct current (DC) power of 0.36 W. The transmitter chip provides a gain of 20 dB and a 1-dB gain compression point (P1dB) of 18.4 dBm over a frequency range from 28 GHz to 31 GHz with a low DC power of 0.85 W. The P1dB can be increased to 20.6 dBm at a higher bias of +4.5 V.
The purpose of this visualization study is to investigate the effect of reduced frequency qualitatively by examining wake patterns for dragonfly flight motion. Dragonflies have two pairs of wing (a forewing and hindwing) and flight is achieved by a pitching and plunging, so it makes a separation over the wings. The separation affects the wake pattern and changed wake pattern has an influence on lift, drag, and propulsion. This experiment was conducted by using a smoke wire technique and a camera fixed above the test section used to take a photograph of the wake. An electronic device is mounted below the test section to find the exact mean positional angle of the wing. The reduced frequency in the experiment is 0.15, 0.3 and 0.45. Results show that reduced frequency is closely related to the wake pattern that determines flight efficiency.
Using the frequency-based decomposition, I decompose the consumption growth to explain well-known patterns of stock returns in the Korean market. To be more specific, the consumption growth is decomposed by its half-life of shocks. The component over four years of half-life is called the business-cycle consumption component, and the components with half-lives under four years are short-run components. I compute the long-run and short-run components of stock excess returns as well and use component-by-component sensitivities to price stock portfolios. As a result, the business-cycle consumption risk with half-life of over four years is useful in explaining the cross-section of size-book-to-market portfolios and size-momentum portfolios in the Korean stock market. The short-run components have their own pricing abilities with mixed direction, so that the restricted one short-term factor model is rejected. The explanatory power with short- and long-run components is comparable to that of the Fama-French three-factor model. The components with one- to four-year half-lives are also helpful in explaining the returns. The results about the long-run components emphasize the importance of long-run component in consumption growth to explain the asset returns.
Root cluster section culture, showing high efficient Protocorm-like body (PLB) formation capacity, were established in Doritaenopsis hybrids. Three types of root were obtained from excised shoots in 1/2MS medium containing different concentrations of NAA; \circled1normal roots, \circled2multiple roots and \circled3abnormal root clusters. Those were placed on 1/2MS medium supplemented with 0.5 mg/L thidiazuron for PLB regeneration. PLB regeneration rate was greater in root cluster section cultures (77.8%) compare to normal root tip cultures(30%). Number of PLBs regenerated from root cluster sections were counted over 11 per explant (5.3 per normal root tip).High frequency of PLB regeneration was achieved in root cluster section culture. This result can be used as an efficient method for clonal proliferation of Doritaenopsis hybrids.
Design methods are presented for a broadband corrugated horn antenna operating X/Ku band (7.25-14.5 CHz). The corrugated horn consists of a circular waveguide taper, a mode converter, a waveguide-to-horn transition, and a hem section. Methods of design are presented for each section. The designed antenna shows excellent characteristics over the entire operating frequency range.
Conventional Piezoelectric Energy Harvesters (CPEH) have been extensively studied for maximizing their electrical output through material selection, geometric and structural optimization, and adoption of efficient interface circuits. In this paper, the performance of Stepped Piezoelectric Energy Harvester (SPEH) under harmonic base excitation is studied analytically, numerically and experimentally. The motivation is to compare the energy harvesting performance of CPEH and SPEHs with the same characteristics (resonant frequency). The results of this study challenge the notion of achieving higher voltage and power output through incorporation of geometric discontinuities such as step sections in the harvester beams. A CPEH consists of substrate material with a patch of piezoelectric material bonded over it and a tip mass at the free end to tune the resonant frequency. A SPEH is designed by introducing a step section near the root of substrate beam to induce higher dynamic strain for maximizing the electrical output. The incorporation of step section reduces the stiffness and consequently, a lower tip mass is used with SPEH to match the resonant frequency to that of CPEH. Moreover, the electromechanical coupling coefficient, forcing function and damping are significantly influenced because of the inclusion of step section, which consequently affects harvester's output. Three different configurations of SPEHs characterized by the same resonant frequency as that of CPEH are designed and analyzed using linear electromechanical model and their performances are compared. The variation of strain on the harvester beams is obtained using finite element analysis. The prototypes of CPEH and SPEHs are fabricated and experimentally tested. It is shown that the power output from SPEHs is lower than the CPEH. When the prototypes with resonant frequencies in the range of 56-56.5 Hz are tested at 1 m/s2, three SPEHs generate power output of 482 μW, 424 μW and 228 μW when compared with 674 μW from CPEH. It is concluded that the advantage of increasing dynamic strain using step section is negated by increase in damping and decrease in forcing function. However, SPEHs show slightly better performance in terms of specific power and thus making them suitable for practical scenarios where the ratio of power to system mass is critical.
We can monitor home from any remote location using our existing telephone line. We have already some technologies to perform these types of application such as: Bluetooth, IR. But these are used in a limited area which we can easily come over in our system. Our propose system has two sections one is Remote Section (RS) where the client will place the request and another is Local Section (LS) where the telephone line is connected with an Input Interfacing Circuit (IIC). Input Interfacing Circuit (IIC) receives the frequency and converts frequency to machine language. Output Interfacing Circuit (OIC) sends voice signal to the client as acknowledgement through modem then the client proceeds for the next steps. This system can be used in commercial or industrial purposes such as controlling computer from remote locations, home monitoring system instead of man or any kind of switching.
The very large container ships have been built recently and those ships have very small structural rigidity compared with the other conventional ships. As a result, the destruction of ship hull is occurred by the springing including to warping phenomena due to encounter waves. In this study, the solutions of hydrodynamic coefficients are obtained by solving the three dimensional source distribution method and the forward speed Green function representing a translating and pulsating source potential for infinite water depth is used to calculating the integral equation. The vessel is longitudinally divided into various sections and the added mass, wave damping and wave exciting forces of each section is calculated by integrating the dynamic pressures over the mean wetted section surface. The equations for six degree freedom of motions is obtained for each section in the frequency domain and stiffness matrix is calculated by Euler beam theory. The computations are carried out for very large ship and effects of bending and torsional ridigity on the wave frequency and angle are investigated.
