Aeroacoustic characteristics of sirocco fan used in Over-The-Range (OTR) has been analyzed in this paper. A microwave hood combination over the gas range is short for the OTR. The flow phenomena of the double-sided sirocco fan was analyzed numerically and experimentally by using commercial code and three dimensional PIV for flow visualization. Also, microphone array is used in order to understand acoustic characteristics of OTR. Two dimensional unsteady flow and acoustic simulation is tried to qualitatively estimate the effects of tonal noise and broadband noise on the overall sound pressure level. It is found that tonal sound is generated from the strong interaction between the impeller and cutoff while broadband sound is generated from the strong secondary flows along the scroll surface. To reduce the noise level, the V-shape cut-off was applied to improve the sound quality by reducing tonal noise. So the peak noise at BPF (Blade Passing Frequency) was almost reduced. The shape of flow-guide to suppress the secondary flow over the scroll surface was carefully checked. It is found that this affects flow pattern at the fan exit and reduces the broad band noise. Through this numerical and experimental study, the sound pressure level was lowered by 4dBA compared to that of the previous fan at the operating point.
This study investigates the effects of sediment on the flow characteristics such as velocity distribution, friction velocity, turbulent intensities, Reynolds stress, etc. Particle tracking velocimetry (PTY) is used to measure the vertical flow field. Results show that flow over the high bed-load concentration region has larger values of mean velocity and friction velocity and smaller values of turbulence intensities, compared to those for flow over the low bed-load concentration region.
In order to investigate effects of grid resolution on large-eddy simulation of flow over a heavy vehicle, large-eddy simulations over the vehicle with coarse grid and fine grid are conducted. In addition, comparison of drag coefficients with the experimental data obtained by a wind tunnel experiment is conducted. Both of the drag coefficients of coarse grid and fine grid large-eddy simulation show good agreement with the experimental data. Flow fields obtained by the coarse and the fine grid large-eddy simulation are compared in the vehicle frontal-face region, the vehicle rear wheel region, and the vehicle base region. Coarse grid large-eddy simulation shows good agreement with the fine grid large-eddy simulation in the vehicle front face region and the vehicle rear wheel region, since the flow over the present vehicle is dominated by flow separation which is geometrically pre-determined, not by the skin friction which is known to be sensitive to grid resolution.
Two-dimensional, unsteady, incompressible and compressible Navier-Stokes codes are developed for the computation of the viscous turbulent flow over high-lift airfoils. The compressible code involves a conventional upwind-differenced scheme for the convective terms and LU-SGS scheme for temporal integration. The incompressible code with pseudo-compressibility method also adopts the same schemes as the compressible code. Three two-equation turbulence models are evaluated by computing the flow over single and multi-element airfoils. The compressible and incompressible codes are validated by predicting the flow around the RAE 2822 transonic airfoil and the NACA 4412 airfoil, respectively. In addition, both the incompressible and compressible code are used to compute the flow over the NLR 7301 airfoil with flap to study the compressible effect near the high-loaded leading edge. The grid systems are efficiently generated using Chimera overlapping grid scheme. Overall, the κ-ω SST model shows closer agreement with experiment results, especially in the prediction of adverse pressure gradient region on the suction surfaces of high-lift airfoils.
In this study, a 2D hydrodynamic model equipped with critical dry depth scheme was developed to reproduce the flow over staircase. The channel geometry of hydraulic experiment conducted by Ishigaki et al. was generated in the computational space, and the developed model was validated against flow properties such as discharge, velocity and momentum. In addition, the water surface profile and the velocity distribution evolved in flow over two layers staircases were analyzed. When the initial water depth at the upper floor was 0.3 m, the maximum velocity at lower floor was 4.2 m/s, and the maximum momentum was $1.2m^3/s^2$, and its conversion to force per unit width was 1.2 kN/m. This value was equivalent to the hydrostatic force with 50 cm water depth, and evacuation became difficult, as proposed by Ishigaki et al. For the flow over staircases connecting two layers, the maximum run-up height in flat part connecting two layers was approximately two times higher than the initial water depth in upper floor, and the rapid shock wave with sharp front and long tail was propagated.
Two-dimensional flow over a pair of circular cylinders in side-by-side arrangements at low Reynolds numbers has been numerically investigated in this study. Numerical simulations are performed, using the immersed boundary method, in the ranges of $40{\leq}Re{\leq}160$ and $g^{\ast}<5$, where Re and $g^{\ast}$ are, respectively, the Reynolds number and the spacing between the two cylinder surfaces divided by the cylinder diameter. Results show that total six kinds of wake patterns are observed over the ranges: antiphase-synchronized, inphase-synchronized, flip-flopping, single bluff-body, deflected, and steady wake patterns. It is found that the characteristics of the flow significantly depends both on the Reynolds number and gap spacing, with the latter much stronger than the former. Instantaneous flow fields, time traces, flow statistics and so on are presented to identify the wake patterns and then to understand the underlying mechanism. It is remarkable that, for the deflected wake pattern, the gap flow is deflected invariably to the cylinder of higher drag coefficient and the deflection way does not change at all. Moreover, the bifurcation phenomena where either of two wake patterns can occur are found at certain flow conditions.

The flow between two concentric cylinders, with the inner one rotating, is studied using numerical simulation. This study considers the identical flow geometry as in the experiments of Wereley and Lueptow[J. Fluid Mech., 364, 1998]. They carried out experiment using PIV to measure the velocity fields in a meridional plane of the annulus in detail. When Taylor number increases over the critical one, the flow instability caused by curved streamlines of the tangential flow induces Taylor vortices in the flow direction. As Taylor number further increases over another critical one, the steady Taylor vortices become unsteady and non-axisymmetrically wavy. The velocity vector fields obtained also show the same flow features found in the experiments of Wereley and Lueptow.

To describe the air flow characteristics within an air cleaner cover and mass air flow sensor (MAFS) entry region installed in a 3.0L engine air induction system, flow visualization, velocity and turbulence intensity measurements were taken in several view planes. A detailed knowledge of the interaction between the design parameters and the flow structures will enhance our understanding of the motions within the flow field and enable engineers to optimize the induction system and reduce the signal-to-noise ratio in the MAFS output. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of coherent motions and the controlling parameters which affect the air flow in the MAFS entrance region over a flow rate of 13-240 kg/hr. The high speed motion pictures illustrated that the air flow generated within the air cleaner cover under steady state condition is quite complex. In both axial and radial planes of the main passage it was found that the flow pattern is remarkably influenced by the air cleaner cover and main passage configuration. A comparison of the flow patterns and measurements in the original and modified air cleaner cover is presented. Measurements from the MAFS indicated an significant reduction in pressure drop and signal noise for the modified cover as compared with the original cover, over an air flow rate of 13-240 kg/hr.

This paper deals with flow characteristics on the air entrainment and the energy dissipation in nappe flow over the stepped drop structure. Nappe flow occurred at low flow rates and for relatively large step height Dominant flow features include an air pocket, a free-falling nappe impact and a subsequent hydraulic jump on the downstream step. Air entrainment occurred from the step edge, through a free-falling nappe impact and a hydraulic jump. Most energy was dissipated by nappe impact and in the downstream hydraulic jump. It was related with the step height and the overflow depth, but not related with step slope. The stepped drop structure was found to be effcient for water treatment and energy dissipation associated with substantial air entrainment.
A non-translating, long duration thunderstorm downburst has been simulated experimentally and numerically by modelling a spatially stationary steady flow impinging air jet. Velocity profiles were shown to compare well with an upper-bound of velocity measurements reported for full-scale microbursts. Velocity speed-up over a range of topographic features in simulated downburst flow was also tested with comparisons made to previous work in a similar flow, and also boundary layer wind tunnel experiments. It was found that the amplification measured above the crest of topographic features in simulated downburst flow was up to 35% less than that observed in boundary layer flow for all shapes tested. From the computational standpoint we conclude that the Shear Stress Transport (SST) model performs the best from amongst a range of eddy-viscosity and second moment closures tested for modelling the impinging jet flow.
