The output capacitance of power semiconductor devices is important in determining the switching losses and in the operation of some resonant converter topologies. Thus, it is important to be able to accurately determine the output capacitance of a particular device operating at elevated power levels so that the contribution of the output capacitance discharge to switch-on losses can be determined under these conditions. Power semiconductor switch manufacturers usually measure device output capacitance using small-signal methods that may be insufficient for power switching applications. This paper shows how first principle methods are applied in a novel way to obtain more relevant large signal output capacitances of Gallium-Nitride (GaN) FETs using the drain-source voltage transient during device switch-off numerically. A non-linear capacitance for an increase in voltage is determined with good correlation. Simulations are verified using experimental results from two different devices. It is shown that the large signal output capacitance as a function of the drain-source voltage is higher than the small signal values published in the data sheets for each of the devices. It can also be seen that the loss contribution of the output capacitance discharging in the channel during switch-on correlates well with other methods proposed in the literature, which confirms that the proposed method has merit.
This work suggests a study on 5 kW plasma power supply design and reactor capacitance estimation algorithm for a wide range of linear output control to operate a plasma reactor. The suggested study is designed to use a two-stage circuit and control the full-bridge circuit of the two-stage circuit using the buck converter output voltage of the single-stage circuit. The switching frequency of the full-bridge circuit is designed to operate through high-frequency switching and obtain maximum output using LC parallel resonance. Soft switching technique(ZVS) is used to reduce the loss caused by high-frequency switching, and duty control of the buck converter is applied to control a wide range of linear output. The internal capacitance of the reactor cannot easily be extracted, and thus, the reactor cannot be operated in an optimized resonant state. To address this issue, this work designs the internal capacitance of the reactor such that estimations can be performed with the developed reactor capacitance estimation algorithm applied to the internal capacitance of the reactor. A 5 kW plasma power supply is designed for a wide range of linear output control, and the validity of the study on the reactor capacitance estimation algorithm is verified.
In order to improve the reliability and the stability of static power conversion system, further to optimize the operational characteristics of the system, it is very important to investigate the effects (output and switching component characteristics) of each parameters in the system. Therefore this paper particualrly deals with the characteristics of a novel ZVS multi-resonant conversion system to duty cycle, resonant capacitance, resonant inductance, and output capacitance. The results show that resonant inductance and output capacitance are dominat factors in the system.
Today, the obstacle detection system has massive size and restrictive detection range. To solve these problems, this paper proposes the capacitance variation detector using the variated capacitance value as a result of the obstacle approaching. If obstacle approaches, the capacitance value of capacitance sensor is increased and the operating frequency of oscillator is decreased. Then this changed frequency appears to the output of the mixer that operate down conversion. The capacitance variation detector is produced by Hynix$0.35{\mu}$ CMOS process. In experiment result, the frequency of final output is 6.81 MHz at no obstacle and 31.45 MHz at approaching obstacle. In conclusion, proposed capacitance variation detector has small size, low power consumption and easiness to set up anywhere. So it is expected to substitute the obstacle detector.

A new approach to designing a broadband and highly efficient class-E power amplifier based on nonlinear shunt capacitance analysis is proposed. The nonlinear shunt capacitance method accurately extracts optimum class-E power amplifier parameters, including an external shunt capacitance and an output impedance, at different frequencies. The dependence of the former parameter on the frequency is considered to select an optimal value of external shunt capacitor. Then, upon determining the latter parameter, an output matching network is optimized to obtain the highest efficiency across the bandwidth of interest. An analytical approach is presented to design the broadband class-E power amplifier of a MOSFET transistor. The proposed method is experimentally verified by a 140-170 MHz class-E power amplifier design with maximum added power efficiency of 82% and output power of 34 dBm.
A capacitive wireless power transfer (C-WPT) system uses an electric field to transmit power through a physical isolation barrier which forms a pair of ac link capacitors between the metal plates. However, the physical dimension and low dielectric constant of the interface medium severely limit the effective link capacitance to a level comparable to the main switch output capacitance of the transmitting circuit, which thus narrows the soft-switching range in the light load condition. Moreover, by fundamental limit analysis, it can be proved that such a low link capacitance increases operating frequency and capacitor voltage stress in the full load condition. In order to handle these problems, this paper investigates optimal design of double matching transformer networks for C-WPT. Using mathematical analysis with fundamental harmonic approximation, a design guideline is presented to avoid unnecessarily high frequency operation, to suppress the voltage stress on the link capacitors, and to achieve wide ZVS range even with low link capacitance. Simulation and hardware implementation are performed on a 5-W prototype system equipped with a 256-pF link capacitance and a 200-pF switch output capacitance. Results show that the proposed scheme ensures zero-voltage-switching from full load to 10% load, and the switching frequency and the link capacitor voltage stress are kept below 250 kHz and 452 V, respectively, in the full load condition.
In this paper, a capacitance estimation scheme for DC-link capacitors for single-phase AC/DC PWM converters is proposed. Under the no-load condition, a controlled AC current (30[Hz]) is injected into the input side, which then causes AC voltage ripples at the DC output side. Or, a controlled AC voltage can be directly injected into the DC output side. By extracting the AC voltage/current and power components on the DC output side using digital filters, the capacitance value can be calculated, where the recursive least squares (RLS) algorithm is used. The proposed methods can be simply implemented with software only and additional hardware is not required. From the experiment results, a high accuracy estimation of capacitances less than 0.85% has been obtained.
This paper proposes a new capacitance estimation scheme for a DC-link capacitor in a three-phase AC/DC/AC PWM converter. A controlled AC voltage with a lower frequency than the line frequency is injected into the DC-link voltage, which then causes AC power ripples at the DC side. By extracting the AC voltage and power components on the DC output side using digital filters, the capacitance can then be calculated using the Support Vector Regression (SVR). By training of SVR, a function which relates a given input (capacitor's power) and its corresponding output (capacitance value) can be derived. This function is used to predict outputs for given inputs that are not included in the training set. The proposed method does not require the information of DC-link current and can be simply implemented with only software and no additional hardware. Experimental results confirm that the estimation error is less than 0.16%.
The output characteristics of step-down piezoelectric transformer is changed by a structure of layers. In this paper, we simulated output characteristics of multi-layer piezoelectric transformers with variation of output layers. Also, fabricated piezoelectric transformers were compared with simulated data. From simulated piezoelectric transformers, the output voltage decreased with increasing number of layers. From these results, piezoelectric transformers were made and the output electrical power of the transformers was measured at resonance frequency and at other frequency. The electrical power of transformers was measured on each transformer's resonance mode. However, measured value of 12-layed transformer's output power was smaller than that of 6-layered transformer's one. It is supposed that internal capacitance and reactance of the piezoelectric transformer's were effected in this result. Therefore we need to connect other road resistance and capacitance in output circuit, in order to increase electrical power of transformers.
LED has been great attentions in lighting industry because of its long life-time, high efficiency, excellent light output characteristics. However, the life-time of the LED driving system is decreased because of the electrolytic capacitor which is used in the power conversion system for driving LED lighting. Therefore the capacitance reduction methods have been studied to replace an electrolytic capacitor with film or tantalum capacitor. This paper presents the Single stage PFC flyback converter with the simplified third harmonic current injection circuit to reduce output capacitance and the proposed system is theoretically analyzed and verified through the experiment.
