  • The research aims to provide the basic data for practical applications by correlating the bio-kinetic coefficients with the load of recalcitrant organic matter in box-mill wastewater. The activated sludge process was employed to a Wastewater disposal plant in an industrial setting, increase of consequently leading to the organic load. The parameter values derived by Monod-kinetic analysis were as follows:specific substrate removal rate $K_{max}=0.17day^{-1}$, half saturation constants $K_s=60.37mg/l$, decay coefficient $K_d=0.142day^{-1}$, microbial yield coefficient y = 0.388mg/mg, and max specific growth rate ${\mu}_{max}=0.006day^{-1}$. In view of biodegradability, the $TCOD_{Mn}/TBOD_5$ ratios of inflow and outflow were 1.07 and 1.41, and the $SCOD_{Mn}/SBOD_5$ ratios of inflow and outflow were 1.10 and 1.50, respectively. The higher $TCOD_{Mn}/TBOD_5$ ratio of outflow indicated that metabolites of a microorganism have accumulated in the cells.

  • The Metropolitan Areas have experienced the phenomenon that some of their peripheral parts emerged as a core business area because of the relocation of residential and economic activities from the central area. An important phenomenon in the spatial transformation of metropolitan area is the weakening of centrality in the center and the increasing strength of centrality in the periphery. This paper examined the changing patterns of spatial interaction in the Seoul Metropolitan area through an analysis on outflow trips. Outflow trip by Seoul decreased in nearby regions and increased in remote regions, however as times goes by, the spatial patterns of the largest outflow trip destination were diversified and the rate of outflow trip to Seoul has decreased in the periphery regions. This research reveals that the most remarkable changes of spatial interactions occurred nearby regions of Seoul and also the changes of outflow trip by Seoul was also distinct. In relation to this, the results arising from the similarity analysis by the variance of trip clearly show the changing spatial patterns of interaction in Yongin, Seoul, Suwon and Hwaseong.

  • Three-dimensional turbulent flows of a distribution manifold are studied by a turbulence model. To investigate the geometrical effects of the manifold, the length and area of exit port are changed. From the results, flow structures related to the outflow uniformity are examined and the deparure angles are obtained. The exit configuration depending on the departure angle has advantages to the outflow uniformity. That is, the decreased exit area in the streamwise direction improves the uniformity of exit flow. For the uniform effusion, the change of exit port by departure angle is more effective them the change of exit area.

  • Landslide dam failure presents as a severe natural disaster due to its adverse impact to people and property. If the landslide dams failed, the discharge of a huge volume of both water and sediment could result in a catastrophic flood in the downstream area. In most of previous studies, breaching process used to be considered as a constructed dam, rather than as a landslide dam. Their erosion rate was assumed to relate to discharge by a sediment transport equation. However, during surface erosion of landslide dam, the sediment transportation regime is greatly dependent on the slope surface and the sediment concentration in the flow. This study aims to accurately simulate the outflow hydrograph caused by landslide dam by overtopping through a 2D surface flow erosion/deposition model. The lateral erosion velocity in this model was presented as a function of the shear stress on the side wall. The simulated results were then compared and it was coherent with the results obtained from the experiments.

  • Objectives: Pregnant women in rural areas do not have access to sufficient obstetric services in their own communities due to the shortage of obstetricians. Therefore, most of these women must seek obstetrician outside of their communities. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between obstetric complications and accessibility to local obstetric care in Korea. Methods: This study was an ecological study in which the unit of analysis was an administrative district. Using Korea National Health Insurance Corporation data, the total number of deliveries and the delivery proportion within and outside of the community from 2001 to 2008 were calculated for 232 administrative districts nationwide. Three outflow levels were categorized based on each district's out-of-community delivery proportion: high outflow (upper one third), moderate outflow (middle one third), and low outflow (lower one third). In addition, three obstetric complication rates (the rate of complications following abortion, ectopic and molar pregnancy, the abortion rate, and the eclampsia rate) were calculated for the 232 districts. One-way ANOVA and multivariate linear regression were used to evaluate obstetric complications among the three outflow levels. Results: The high outflow districts had higher rates of eclampsia and complications following abortion, ectopic, and molar pregnancy compared to the other districts (ANOVA, p<0.05). However, there was no significant difference in the abortion rate among the three groups. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that high outflow districts were statistically significant in the rate of complications following abortion, ectopic and molar pregnancy and eclampsia rate after adjusting for local tax per capita (p<0.01). Conclusion: These results indicate that poor access to local obstetric care correlate with poor obstetric outcomes (delayed or excessive bleeding, embolism, genital tract or pelvic infection, shock or other complications following abortion and ectopic or molar pregnancy, or eclampsia).

  • Recently, the number of students who get double majors has tended to increase in many universities. As results, many problems occur because immoderate inflow of double-major students is concentrated in a specific popular department. In this paper, we study the characteristic of inflow and outflow of double majors using social network analysis and decision tree analysis. According to the results, SAT score affected the inflow of double majors the most. Additionally, department category, course evaluation score, employment rate also affected the inflow of double majors in the order named. On the other hand, department category affected the outflow of double majors the most. Additionally, SAT score, employment rate, course evaluation score also affected the outflow of double majors in the order named.

  • This paper provides the results of numerical and theoretical predictions of oil outflows from damaged single-hull and double-hull ships.Theoretical equations derived from the unsteady Bernoulli equation and a CFD method for multi-phase flow analysis were used to estimate the oil outflow rate from cargo tank. The predicted oil outflow rate from a single-hull cargo tank damaged due to grounding and collision accidents showed a good agreement with the available experimental results in both numerical and theoretical analyses. However, in the case of the double-hull conditions, the time variation of the amount of water and oil mixture inside the ballast tank predicted by the theoretical equation showed some different behavior from the numerical results. The reason was that the interaction of the oil flow with the water inflow in the ballast tank was not reflected in the theoretical equations. In the problems of the initial pressure condition in the cargo and ballast tanks, the oil outflow and water inflow were delayed at the pressure condition that the tanks were sealed. When the flow interaction between the oil and water in the ballast tank was less complicated, the theoretical and the numerical results showed a good agreement with each other.

  • rate of outflow is equated to the total rate of flow, both the state equation and its linearized equation yield almost identical oscillations of water levels. This shows that effects of pipe resistance on the surges are small, and justifies a free oscillation analysis. Free oscillation equation has six eigen modes of different periods, including a rigid mode which is existed when the pumped rate of outflow differs from the total rate of inflow. The six modes constitute a variety of surges dependent on different inflow and outflow conditions. Presence of the rigid mode needs sophisticated pump operations adjusted to real flood inflows.

  • This paper presents the transport and removal of organic substances from the contaminated soft soils and sludges such as marine dredging waste, marine sediments, mine tailing waste, and sewage sludge by electroosmosis. A series of laboratory experiments including variable conditions such as contamination levels, solid contents, and applied voltage rates were peformed with the contaminated soft clay specimen mixed with organic substance. Investigated are specimen density, dewatering rate, outflow rate, and outflow concentration. The test results showed that organic substances in the soils were removed by applied voltages. The results indicated that this process can be used efficiently to clean up the contaminated soil.

  • Nitrogen removal rate and emergent plant growth were investigated of a free-water-surface constructed treatment wetland system, whose dimensions were 31m in length and 12m in width. The system was constructed on floodplain in the Kwangju Stream from May to June 2001. Cattails(Typha angustifolia) were transplanted from natural wetlands and their stems were cut at about 40cm height from their bottom ends. Water of the Kwangju Stream were funneled into the system by gravity flow and its treated effluent was discharged back into the stream. The average height of the cattail stems was 45.2cm in July 2001 and 186cm in October 2001. The number of stems averaged 22 stems/$m^2$ in July 2001 and 52 stems/$m^2$ in September 2001. Volume and water quality of inflow and outflow were analyzed from July 2001 through December 2001. Inflow and outflow averaged 40.01 and 39.55 $m^3$/day, respectively. Hydraulic detention time was about 1.5 days. Average nitrogen uptake by cattails was 69.31 $N\;mg\;m^{-2}\;day^{-1}$. Removal rate of $NO_3-N$, $NH_3-N$ and T-N averaged 195.58, 53.65 and 628.44 $mg\;m^{-2}\;day^{-1}$, respectively. The average removal rate of T-N was about 39%.
