  • In Korean apartment housing, balcony is semi-outdoor space for storage and drying laundry. Recently, this semi-outdoor balcony space has been merged into indoor living space with the legal permission of balcony extension. It results in disappearance of the original function of balcony in apartment housing. This study attempts to propose better utilization of balcony extension by analyzing how balcony has been extended and used, and what residents' needs are. This study asks 400 housewives living in apartment housing in Jangyu new urban area, Kyungnam. Findings are : 1) Balcony extensions are carried out in a living room, a large bedroom and a small bedroom. Most extensions are made for enlarging adjacent indoor living space; 2) Original balcony that is not extended is used for drying laundry, resting, flower pot, storing, and kid's playing; 3) The residents recognize that problems of balcony extension are the decreased heating efficiency, the reduced soundproofing effect, the loss of spare housework space, and the disappearance of buffer between indoor and outdoor space; 4) Many residents want to extend their balcony space of a small bedroom and a large bedroom and to keep the balcony space of a kitchen-dining room and a master bedroom as they are.

  • The purpose of this study is to set up a model of affective evaluation to structurally and systematically analyse subjective affective expressions of human beings with regard to the residential environment and to analyse the correlation between affective responses of residents and physical elements by positively applying the model to the evaluation of outdoor space of apartment complexes as an area of study on evaluation of residential environment. The area for evaluation was limited to three apartment complexes situated in Daegu, and the subjects for evaluation were also limited to a group of residents(housewives) living at the three apartment complexes. The research method is summarized as follows. 214 affective words(adjective phrases) expressing outdoor space of apartments were selected from literature on random sampling basis, and reduced to 25 ones through factor analysis. Then, these 25 words were systematized by an affective evaluating scale with 7 categories of meaning. The evaluation was conducted with 324 homemakers living at the apartment complexes selected for evaluation from September 29, 2000 to October 5, 2000. SPSSWIN, a statistical program was used for analysis.

Indoor and outdoor data on nitrogen dioxide concentrations were obtained for 48 private residences. Personal exposure to $NO_2$ was also investigated. Indoor outdoor ratio of $NO_2$ concentrations was 0.87, while the correlations between the indoor and outdoor levels were less than 0.50 for $NO_2$. Homes with an unvented space heater had average living room $NO_2$ concentrations approximately double those with a vented space heater. • In elderly housing facilities where are elderly living facilities, the importance of outdoor space for psychological healing and stability, health improvement and environmental improvement is increasing, since elderly people suffer from depression and are hostile to these facilities. This study aims to identify if outdoor spaces in elderly housing facilities in Seoul have environments appropriate for the elderly and to suggest problems and improvements. For achieving this purpose, nine elderly housing facilities in Seoul were chosen and a field survey was conducted targeting five facilities with outdoor spaces. Based on the previous studies, the concepts of elderly housing facility and outdoor space were organized. Then, a checklist was drawn up as a framework of analysis for evaluating the present state of outdoor spaces of elderly housing facilities and space planning, and improvements were explored. It was found that elderly housing facilities in Seoul had good connectivity and accessibility to the surrounding areas, but there were few supporting facilities, except for resting places. Also, the result of analysis of the present state showed that most elderly housing facilities were located in high lands and the safety of elderly people was being threatened while moving, due to the absence of handrails. In conclusion, it is considered that outdoor space of elderly housing facility should be planned in consideration of safety, affordance and cognition out of the standards of researcher's evaluation tool.

  • This study aims to examine the existing conditions of elderly housing facilities and to understand the characteristics and types of outdoor living environments utilized by the elderly. To achieve this, this study relied on two methods: a descriptive method of researching publications and related scholastic writings, and an empirical study that included a survey of present conditions and interviews with the elderly and their nursing care providers. Additionally, evaluation of usage patterns and physical traces were carried out in twelve cases. First, the study showed that all of the facilities, which are fixed in particular areas, had difficulty providing spatial diversity that met the needs of residences. This means that these areas lack flexibility. Activity programs were, however, carried out in a lively manner in well-equipped spaces. Second, an evaluation of outdoor living environments showed that basic facilities were more than adequate, in general. Consideration of resident's physical strength and taste, however, was evaluated as low, indicating that facilities and spaces should be considered to reflect the ages, physical capacity, diverse tastes and hobbies of the elderly, as well. Third, examining the usage patterns of outdoor living activities of residents, the purposes of using outdoor spaces of elderly housing facilities were mainly 'to take a walk' and 'to engage in simple physical exercise' and the walkway, simple sports facilities, and building entrances were highly utilized. The importance of outdoor living environments values was a mean of 4.07 and satisfaction was 4.17. This indicates that residents thought that outdoor living environments are very important and currently satisfied with them.
