Lots of needs are being paid for how to design HVAC system in large-scale buildings. Increasing awareness of energy use is main point of this research. HVAC systems' energy characteristics are not clearly identified and understood, so the optimal design of HVAC system is very important. The energy parameters of HVAC design that are system input energy, water/air moving equipments (pumps/fans) energy and outdoor air conditioning energy for IAQ are important. The purpose of this study is to provide the basic data for energy conservational HVAC design strategies.
Dedicated outdoor air-conditioning(DOA) system that utilizes pre-cooling and desiccant dehumidification can be superior to conventional cooling and reheating system with respect to energy consumption and indoor thermal comfort. In this work, simulation has been conducted to study various factors that affect the performance of DOA. Dynamic simulation shows the transient variation of temperature and humidity as the on/off control logic is imposed. Exit humidity of process air and flow rate are varied to study the effect on exit temperature of process air, dehumidification quantity, required regeneration temperature and exit humidity of regeneration air. For an outdoor air condition of $28.5^{\circ}C$ temperature, 16 g/kg humidity ratio and 2000 cmh flow rate, the dehumidification efficiency is increased by 4.6% as the flow rate is doubled.
In this study, the actual energy consumption of the secondary side District Heating System (DHS) with different hot water supply temperature control methods is compared. The two methods are Outdoor Temperature Reset Control and Outdoor Temperature Predictive Control. While Outdoor Temperature Reset Control has been widely used for energy savings of the secondary side system, the results show that the Outdoor Temperature Predictive Control method saves more energy. In general, the Outdoor Temperature Predictive Control method lowers the supply temperature of hot water, and it reduces standby losses and increases the overall heat transfer value of heated spaces due to more flow into the space. During actual energy consumption monitoring, the Outdoor Temperature predictive Control method saves about 6.6% of energy when compared to the Outdoor Temperature Reset Control method. Also, it is found that at partial load condition, such as during daytime, the fluctuation of hot water supply temperature with Outdoor Temperature Reset Control is more severe than that with Outdoor Temperature Predictive Control. Thus, it proves that Outdoor Temperature Predictive Control is more stable even at partial load conditions.
Instead of testing split air conditioners, an empirically based calculation procedure may be used to estimate the Energy Efficiency Ratio at ARI A test conditions. Typically, the system involving the indoor unit well sold and the given outdoor unit is called the matched system. All other systems involving a given outdoor unit and other indoor units are called the mixed systems. To estimate the EER(A) for the mixed systems, EER(A) for the matched system must be known, Generally, the EER(A) for the matched system is known. This procedure relies on independent measurements and calculations made on an outdoor unit in conjunction with a matched indoor and a mixed indoor coil. A heat pump simulation model was used to quantify the effects of individual system components on the system performance. The procedure is applicable to all air-conditioning units having rated cooling capacities less than 19,000W and charged with refrigerant 22.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the indoor air quality (IAQ) and energy benefits of a dedicated outdoor air system (DOAS) and compare them with a conventional variable air volume (VAV) system. The DOAS is a decoupled system that supplies only outdoor air, while reducing its consumption using an enthalpy wheel. The VAV system supplies air that is mixed outdoor and transferred indoor. The VAV has the issue of unbalanced ventilation in each room in multiple zones because it supplies mixing air. The DOAS does not have this problem because it supplies only outdoor air. That is, the DOAS is a 100% outdoor air system and the VAV is an air conditioning system. The transient simulations of carbon dioxide concentration and energy consumption were performed using a MATLAB program based on the thermal loads from the model predicted by the TRNSYS 18 program. The results indicated that when the air volume is large, such as in summer, the distribution of air is not appropriate in the VAV system. The DOAS however, supplies the outdoor air stably. Moreover, in terms of annual primary energy consumption, the DOAS consumed approximately 40% less energy than the VAV system.

Air-cooled split-type air conditioners (AC) are very popular in high-rise residential and commercial buildings in Korea. The performance of such AC systems varies significantly with system characteristics and environmental conditions. Particularly, the outdoor condensing unit of the system, if poorly cooled due to high density of AC distribution and restricted outdoor space, will result in large decrease of cooling efficiency and increase of electrical energy consumption and may further jeopardize the system reliability. This paper presents a numerical analysis on the thermal and energy performance of a group of air-cooled air conditioners installed at a courtyard of a high-rise building. The study introduces a series of new energy performance indices to assess the group performance of the AC condensers with different outdoor unit layouts. The results not only indicate the COP of the systems, but also quantify the system capacity and energy consumption. The evaluation method and indices developed are useful for guiding the design of the distribution plan of the AC units at building re-entrants.
The present study has been conducted to study the performance of Dedicated outdoor air handling unit. Dedicated outdoor air handling unit consists of pre-cooler, dehumidification and after cooler. By combining dedicated outdoor air-conditioning and heat pump, a new four-season dedicated outdoor air handling unit has been developed. Amount of energy saved and condition when this new system is superior to conventional vapor-compression cooling system has been presented.
In this paper, we discussed the energy performance of underfloor air distribution(UFAD) and overhead air distribution system according to outdoor air intake rates in a office building. For this, the laboratory(S lab.) is selected for measuring the thermal environments of UFAD system and overhead system. Based on the measured data, the TRNSYS simulation is used to evaluate the energy performance of UFAD system and the overhead system according to outdoor air intake rates. By increasing outdoor air intake rates from required outdoor air intake rates(100CMH) to maximum air intake rates, the energy savings of UFAD system comparing with overhead system are varied $15%{\sim}25.6%$ in summer, $12.8%{\sim}19%$ in fall/spring and not varied in winter(8%). As results of simulations on stratification height and cooling set temperature, the lower the stratification height and the higher cooling set temperature, the larger cooling energy savings of UFAD comparing with overhead system according to outdoor air intake rates.
Current building procedures seek to minimize external air supplies to reduce the energy consumption of air conditioning, resulting in a high dependency on mechanical ventilation. We therefore studied an economizer-cycle system, whereby the introduction of external air saves energy. We analyzed different economizer-control methods, addressing mixed-air temperatures and outdoor-air fractions according to outdoor-air temperatures; also, we analyzed the energy consumption of the three economizer-cycle control types using detailed EnergyPlus simulation modeling. A differential enthalpy control method showed a lower energy consumption range from 5.8% to 6.2% than that of other methods during the simulated period. A differential dry-bulb control method showed a 12.7% lower energy consumption than the no-economizer method in the intermediate period, but also showed 7.1% more energy consumption during the summer period. When latent heat was not removed due to high summer humidity, we found a significant level of resultant energy consumption.
The new HVAC system to lower the conveyance energy and building height using IAV (Increasing Air Volume) technique is developed. IAV units which are equipped in each zone carry out air-conditioning and supply fresh air by induction of outdoor air in main duct. The design program which decides size of OAHU and IAV unit according to air conditioning load and fresh air demand of each zone is presented. The control system is developed to operate efficiently HVAC system and IAV unit, so that individual zone operation and well-deal with partial load and IAQ problem are possible. The new system is investigated in model building and makes more profit in conveyance energy, size of air conditioning facilities room and building height than VAV system. But in construction cost it is worse by about 15 per-centage.
