This paper describes a new method of calculating expected energy generation and loss of load probability (L.O.L.P) for electric power system operation and expansion planning. The method represents an equivalent load duration curve (E.L.D.C) as a mixture of cumulants approximation (M.O.N.A). By regarding a load distribution as many normal distributions-rather than one normal distribution-and representing each of them in terms of Gram-Charlier expansion, we could improve the accuracy of results. We developed an algorithm which automatically determines the number of distribution and demarcation points. In modeling of a supply system, we made subsets of generators according to the number of generator outage: since the calculation of each subset's moment needs to be processed rapidly, we further developed specific recursive formulae. The method is applied to the test systems and the results are compared with those of cumulant, M.O.N.A. and Booth-Baleriaux method. It is verified that the M.O.C.A. method is faster and more accure than any other method.
A major element in the evaluation of reliability worth is the customer cost associated with a loss of supply. This paper proposes a new methodology to estimate the IEAR(Interrupted energy assessment rate) based on expectation value of outage time by using micro approach. The case study in this paper was performed on the basis of the survey data which had been conducted in a previous research.
The mechanical integrity of generator stator windings is one of the critical point because the electric power is generated and conducted to power system through these windings. To cool down the heat emitted from generator winding during its operation, a majority of generators use de-mineralized water characterized by high cooling efficiency. Contrary to such the excellent cooling efficiency, however, the damaged bar insulations attributed to the absorption of cooling water in the generator stator winding lead to highly time- and cost consuming efforts as well as to service deterioration due to unexpected forced outage of generator. It is described that the new design of water absorption sensor using cross capacitance for generator in power plant in order to increase the reliability of water absorption diagnostics for generator stator bar insulation.
Several mechanisms are introduced for the procurement of capacity adequacy. In the competitive electricity market, however, it is a GENCO that makes generation investment decision. A GENCO will invest a new generator when it can get more profit than cost. There requires a model to evaluate profit with respect to a new generation investment. In the view of long-term investment, evaluation of a profit of a generator in the electricity market is quite different from that of short-term operation. In this paper, a new profit-evaluation model is proposed for the long-term generation investment. It can treat the probabilistic characteristics of generators, ie, forced-outage-rates, which affect profit of generators.
This paper deals with the operation of a flywheel energy storage UPS. The ups has good features such as long life-time, improved efficiency, no environment problems, reduced size and space, and low maintenance cost compared with the conventional UPS using battery. The operating principle of the UPS is analysed in each mode including charging, voltage compensation, discharging, and voltage unbalance compensation. Especially, the tracking characteristic of the disturbed phase of the source voltage after outage is analysed. The usefulness of the operation is proved through simulations.
This paper presents a new approach to evaluate optimal basic reliability indices of electric distribution systems using genetic algorithm. The use of optimal reliability evaluation is an important aspect of distribution system planning and operation to determine adequacy reliability level of each area. In this paper, the reliability model is based on the analytical method, connecting component failure to load point outage in each section. The proposed method applies genetic algorithm to calculate the optimal values of basic reliability indices, ie. failure rate and repair time, for a load point in the power distribution system, subject to minimizing interruption cost. Test results for the model system are reported in the paper compared with a direct optimization method(gradient projection).
This paper presents a probabilistic approach of reliability evaluation and economic assessment for solving transmission network expansion planning problems. Three methods are proposed for TNEP, which are reorganizing the existing power system focused on the buses of interest, selecting candidates using modified system operating state method with healthy, marginal and at-risk states, and finally choosing the optimal alternative using cost-optimization method. TNEP candidates can be selected based on the state reliability such as sufficient and insufficient indices, as proposed in this paper. The process of economic assessment involves the costs of construction, maintenance and operation, congestion, and outage. The case studies are carried out with modified IEEE-24 bus system and Jeju island power system expansion plan in Korea, to verify the proposed methodology.
This paper presents a new algorithm of optimal measurement system by using band matrix characteristic respectively for state estimation. A performance index of measurement system is established to reflect relation among measurement sets, probability of measurement failure and cost of individual meter installation. Selection ranking in the candidates of measurement sets is composed to guarantee the observability for any any single meter outage. Performance index sensitivity is introduced and recursive formula which based on the matrix inversion lemma used for selection. The proposed algorithm is composed of successive addition algorithm, successive elimination algorithm and combinatorial algorithm. The band matrix characteristic could save in memory requirements and calculate the performance index faster than earlier.
As power industry evolves into Smart Grid scheme, previously closed power systems are being integrated into public communication networks. It increases the controllability and efficiency of the system, but also accompanies many cyber threats having existed in the Internet to the SCADA system. Therefore it is required to apply security countermeasures to the Smart Grid, which brings about investment costs. There have been few approaches to assess risks from cyber attack especially in electric power industry. So this paper proposes a methodology to assess quantitative impacts of various types of cyber attacks to a power system, and also shows the feasibility of the method through a case study.
An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) allows small companies and domestic users to cope with power outages; but existing designs lack flexibility of control and require expensive battery maintenance, with a cost proportional to the outage compensation time. We combine a compact synchronous generator with a battery, with 10% of the capacity that would otherwise be required, to obtain a UPS with reduced maintenance costs for the same performance. Any UPS must respond immediately to a power loss, and our uninterruptible generator supply (UGS) is therefore built around real-time scheduling of its internal operations; this also makes it suitable for integration into the industrial gateway. The UGS is based on a real-time operating system, with an integrated wireless module providing connectivity to a web server, for monitoring and management, which can be performed remotely on a mobile device.
