  • Purpose: This descriptive study was conducted to compare the teaching status, utilization of the teaching materials, and the need to solve matters of sex education between the school health educators and teachers working in an elementary school in Busan. Method: 182 school health educators and 125 teachers participated in the research. Data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire, and analyzed by frequency and x2 -test using the SPSS WIN 10.0 Program. Results: While school health educators carried out most of the sex education in the extra curriculum and physical education class, teachers did in the regular curriculum and physical education class. Regarding the utilization of the teaching materials on sex education, although the majority of school health educators used the teacher's manual, only a few teachers used it. Most of the school health educators used the ICT teaching materials while only half of the teachers did. Regarding the methods to solve matters on sex education, school health educators responded that a sex-related subject should be combined with a health subject, and an independent sex-related subject was necessary. The teachers, however, responded that it was necessary to secure enough time for sex education, the sex-related subject combined with a health subject was necessary, and there is a need to designate a sex educator. Conclusion: School health educators utilized more teaching materials for sex education and suggested more active methods to solve matters related to sex education. Therefore, school health educators should be more active as sex educators, and the subject of sex education should be adopted as a regular course.

  • The purpose of the study was to investigate the sanitation management status and implementation barriers of the HACCP system. A survey was conducted based on 760 schools through e-mail after having gone through phone interviews to dieticians in Seoul, Gyeonggi and Incheon areas from December 2006 to March 2007. The following statistics were drawn out from the 459 surveys out of the 760, thus giving a response rate of 60.4% (N = 459). The statistical data analysis was completed using the SPSS program. 92.6% of the respondents operated sanitary education once a month and 67.1 % used internet as their sanitary educational source. 50.5% of the pre-preparation rooms were not divided and 78.0% of kitchen floors were always kept wet. Only 15.7% of the respondents used heat and cold insulators and 73.2% of drinking water was natural or purified water. 60.3% of food trays were electronically sterilized and 70.2% of spoons and chopsticks were sterilized by boiling water. The main cause of food-borne diseases was the lack of facilities and equipment (33.1%). Also, the deficiency of facilities and equipment (4.07 points) acted as an implementation barrier of the HACCP system. Compared to Gyeonggi or Incheon area results, Seoul's facilities and equipment (p < 0.001) and implementing barriers of the HACCP system (p < 0.001) results came out relatively high. After the analysis of the implementation barriers of the HACCP system, 91.7% of school principals said it was difficult to apply the HACCP system due to lack of financial support. In consideration to the school foodservice support, solutions for the facilities of school foodservice and a systematic sanitary education of the HACCP system must be made for the employees and everyone else who are related.

The regional distribution of this research is as follows; 377 schools in Seoul, 648 schools in Gyeonggido, 160 schools in Kangwondo, 438 schools in Choongchungdo equaling 1,623 schools in total. And out of the total 1,623 schools, 815 (50.2%) were elementary schools and 808 (48.8%) were middle and high schools (p < 0.001). Most of the elementary schools, excluding 4 schools, were self-operated. In the case with middle and high schools, 81.5% (513 schools) were self-operated and 18.4% (295 schools) were contracted. When dealing with the sanitation management of school foodservice in Kangwondo and Seoul, elementary schools were less equipped with equipment and facilities than middle and high schools which proved that they were in need of improvements (p < 0.01). Schools with self-operated foodservice, in particular, were in need of preparation zone improvements. 52.3%~88.0% of stainless equipment such as utensils, spoons/chopsticks, subsidiary food tray, and food trays were sterilized by dryers. Work tables, vegetable slicers, and mincers were chemically sterilized and plastic materials were sterilized by ultraviolet rays. • Currently, climate change is regarded as one of the most important environmental issues in the 21st century. However, climate change education is not seriously carried out in schools. This study is concerned about enhancing students' recognition about climate change and actions responding to climate change through an history discipline. More specifically, this study tried to identify the effect of history lessons on environmental education, especially focused on climate change, by performing an experiment. The experiment was designed based on Solomon four-group design and carried out in one high school in Gwangmyeong city. Findings of the experiment are as follows. First, students who had taken the reorganized history lesson based on climate change - that is, students with experimental treatments - gained higher understanding of climate change than before and students of control groups. Second, students with experimental treatments gained higher understanding about relationship between history and climate change. Third, students with experimental treatments showed higher possibility of taking responding actions to climate change. In conclusion, history lessons reorganized with environmental issues, for instance climate change, have big potential for environmental education since they contribute to enhancing environmental recognition and prompting responding actions through exploration the effects of existing historical facts. Interdisciplinary approach like that taken in this study will provide students with more comprehensive and extended prism for the environment.

  • This study has presented construction planning data or material. which can maximize the efficiency of school facilities; in other words, to utilize school facilities as local continuing education facilities in terms of use rate, as well as to make school facilities to accommodate the 7th education curricula. This study has been carried out through questionnaire survey on currently executed various curricular operation types, targeting people in charge of drawing up and operation of the curricula in liberalarts high school. The questionnaire survey has also been conducted on ideal teaching-learning type by subject, targeting teachers in charge of individual subject. The expansion of specialized curricula rooms and classrooms, as well as classrooms by level and ICT-related rooms, are required to invigorate continuing education, which utilizes smooth operation of the 7th education curricula and school facilities. I also assume that implementation of school curricula and the role as local continuing education facilities can be fulfilled, through activated deployment type and operation programs with which management of the facilities becomes easy, in order to utilize those classrooms to be used for continuing education.
