  • This study investigated on details of flow characteristics of a multi-blade fan for domestic ventilation. Experiments and analysis were carried out to describe on flow pattern with variations of cut-off angle near the scroll housing throat, which were performed by PIV measurement for the flow field and by total pressure probes. The stagnation point at cut-off region of the fan moves to the exit of the scroll housing as the cut-off angle increases. The movement of stagnation point and the variation of throat area of the scroll housing influence to the distribution of velocity magnitude at the exit of the fan. Furthermore, a large distortion of the velocity distribution at the scroll exit causes to increase mixing loss along the flow path.

  • In order to reduce the exhaust emissions of a spark ignition engine, it is important not only to improve the catalyst conversion efficiency, but also to directly reduce the engine-out exhaust emissions during a cold starting of the engine and warm up periods. The purpose of this study is to evaluate feasibility of a glow plug for an early fuel evaporator. In order to promote atomization, gasoline is injected on the glow plug with room temperature(20$\^{C}$) and high temperature(250$\^{C}$). To analyze the spray behavior characteristics, a PMAS is used to measure the SMD and the dropsize distribution of an impinging spray and a free spray. Results show that the evaporation rate of the impinging spray on the high temperature surface of the glow plug was higher than that of the free spray on the room temperature surface.

  • Temperature distribution on the flank face in orthogonal turning with cutting tool of high speed steel is studied by using a finite element method and experiments. Experiments are carried out to verify the validity of the temperature measurement by using a thermoelectric couple junciton imbedded in a cutting tool of high speed steel. Good agreement is obtained between the analytical results and the experimental ones for the temperature distributions on flank face of cutting tool with igh speed steel. The analytical results show that the temperature on the top flank face of a tool is higher because of the difference of the friction velocity on each face of the tool.

  • The short-time permissible temperature of an overhead distribution line conductor is determined by the softening characteristics of ACSR-OC, ACSR AW/OC 160, typical conductors employed in the overhead distribution line. Transient heat transfer equation and Newton's cooling law were applied to analyze the heating and cooling effects of the insulating conductors, respectively, and the error of co-relation was calibrated after simulating the softening test to assess the short-time characteristic of the insulating conductor. In order to verify the softening characteristic, the conductors were tested with heat cycle. The test was totally carried out 200 cycles, and 1 cycle was to heat and cool at 1.1 times permissible current of the conductor, 1.15 times for 120 minutes, respectively. After heating, the tensile strength and surface of the conductor were observed. In case of ACSR-OC, as the result of 100 hour heating test, the tensile strength of the insulator was 0.8 times the initial value. This is equivalent to the value of the conductors which are used for 10 years at sites.

  • In this paper, the illuminance distribution of blackboards on classroom in elementary, junior, and senior high school was measured and analyzed. Generally, average illuminance and uniformity of illuminance was 519[lx] and 0.543 (elementary: 389[lx], 0.387; junior: 632[lx], 0.570; senior: 527[lx], 0.608) respectively. When all lighting fixtures in each classroom were turned on, average illuminance was higher about 65% than lights-out, and, in case that local lighting fixtures exist, was higher 27% than absence, but uniformity of illuminance turned bad on the contrary ($0.462{\rightarrow}0.676$). According to classification into direction of windows on classroom. facing north, both were bad. In case of classroom to slant to east or west, the difference of illuminance at the forenoon and afternoon was big, and uniformity of illuminance was also bad.

  • In this paper, we investigated methods to reduce SAR(Specific Absorption Rate) value with EMI(Electromagnetic Interference) paint distribution on front case of mobile handset. Simulations for several different EMI patterns were carried out. For the purpose of modeling, we used 3 dimensional CAD(Computer Aided Design) program, `Pro-engineering'. SAR simulation was done with SEMCAD, simulation platform for electromagnetic compatibility antenna design and dosimetry. In order to distinguish the individual pieces and to enable an assignment of the different material properties, each subfile was imported separately. In simulation, folding angle was set to $142^{\circ}.$ If we vary folding angle, different SAR value will be obtained. Among the tested EMI paint patterns, the hairpin pattern showed the best performance, i.e. the decrease efficiency of $16.5\%$ and horizontal-direction zigzag pattern showed the decrease efficiency of $12.2\%$ when we set the completely removed pattern as reference.

  • Due to frequent occurrence of a localized torrential downpour caused by global warming and change of outflow tendency caused by rapid urbanization and industrialization, risk analysis must be carried out in levee design with uncertainty. In this study, reliability analysis was introduced to quantitatively evaluate the overtopping risk of levee by the uncertainty. First of all, breaking function was established as a function of flood stage and height of levee. All variables of breaking function were considered as random variables following any distribution functions, and the risk was defined as the possibility that the flood stage is formed higher than height of levee. The risk evaluation model was developed with AFDA (Approximate Full Distribution Approach). The flood stage computed by 2-D numerical model FESWMS-2DH was used as input data for the model of levee risk evaluation. Risk for levee submergence were quantitatively presented for levee of Wol-Song-Cheon.

  • A range-frequency interference pattern is analyzed in the course of the propagation of ship noise in shallow water. It has been shown to exhibit striated bands of intensity maxima and minima in the spectrogram. The slope of the striations is an invariant of the modal interference and is described by a waveguide invariant parameter $\beta$. It turns out that this interference pattern is useful for identifying the physical properties of the waveguide such as seabed properties. In this article, the interference pattern is analyzed using image processing techniques to produce the distribution of the beta and the effects of sediment types and geoacoustic parameters on beta distribution are examined and characterized by moments of the distributions.

  • Welding processes cause undesirable problems, such as residual stresses and deformations due to the thermal loads imposed by local heating, melting, and cooling processes. This paper presents a computational modeling technique to simulate the Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) process, emphasizing the effect of the melting bead on the residual stress distribution. Both a three-bar analogy and a three-dimensional thermo-mechanical finite element analysis are carried out in order to explain the effect. Element (de)activation, enthalpy, and adjustment of the reference temperature of thermal strain are considered with respect to the effect of the weld filler metal added to the base metal during a thermo-elastic-plastic analysis. Stress distributions obtained by the present study are compared with measured values and available data from other studies. The effect of the melting bead on the residual stress distribution is discussed and demonstrated.

  • The excessive axial load occurred in an immovable zone of continuous welded rail(CWR) tracks threatens the security of running trains due to the track buckling in extreme hot summer. The influence factors, such as rail temperature for compressive stress, ballast resistance for track stiffness and initial imperfection of track for tracks irregularity are uncertain track parameters that are randomly varied by climate conditions, operating conditions and maintenance of track etc. So, buckling of CWR tracks has very high uncertainties. Therefore, applying the probabilistic approach method is essential in order to rationally consider the uncertainty and randomness of the various parameters. In this study, buckling sensitivity analysis was carried out with respect to the characteristics of probability distribution of lateral ballast resistance using the buckling probability evaluation system of CWR tracks developed by our research team.
