  • The magnetron, a vacuum tube, is currently the usual high-power microwave power source used for microwave heating. However, the oscillating frequency and output power are unstable and noisy due to the low quality of the high-voltage power supply and low Q of the oscillation circuit. A heating system with enhanced reliability and the capability for control of chemical reactions is desired, because microwave absorption efficiency differs greatly depending on the object being heated. Recent studies on microwave high-efficiency power amplifiers have used harmonic processing techniques, such as class-F and inverse class-F. The present study describes a high-efficiency 100 W GaN-HEMT amplifier that uses a harmonic processing technique that shapes the current and voltage waveforms to improve efficiency. The fabricated GaN power amplifier obtained an output power of 50.4 dBm, a drain efficiency of 72.9%, and a power added efficiency (PAE) of 64.0% at 2.45 GHz for continuous wave operation. A prototype microwave heating system was also developed using this GaN power amplifier. Microwaves totaling 400 W are fed from patch antennas mounted on the top and bottom of the microwave chamber. Preliminary heating experiments with this system have just been initiated.

  • Knowing that the variability of soil properties is an important source of uncertainty in geotechnical analyses, we will study in this paper the effect of this variability on the seismic response of a structure within the framework of Soil Structure Interaction (SSI). We use the proposed and developed model (N2-ISS, Mekki et al., 2014). This approach is based on an extension of the N2 method by determining the capacity curve of the fixed base system oscillating mainly in the first mode, then modified to obtain the capacity curve of the system on a flexible basis using the concept of the equivalent nonlinear oscillator. The properties of the soil that we are interested in this paper will be the shear wave velocity and the soil damping. These parameters will be modeled at first, as independent random fields, then, the two parameters will be correlated. The results obtained showed the importance of the use of random field in the study of SSI systems. The variability of soil damping and shear wave velocity introduces significant uncertainty not only in the evaluation of the damping of the soil-structure system but also in the estimation of the displacement of the structure and the base-shear force.

  • The improved Green integral equation using the Kelvin-type Green function in known free of irregular frequencies where the integral over the inner free surface integral is removed from the integral equation, resulting in an overdetermined integral equation. The solution of the overdetermined Green integral equation is shown identical with the solution of the improved Green integral equation Using the B-spline higher order panel method, the overdetermined equation is discretized in two different ways; one of the resulting linear system is square and the other is redundant. Numerical experiments show that the solutions of both are identical. Using the present methods, the exact values and higher derivatives of the potential at any place over the wetted surface of the body can be found with much fewer panels than low order panel method.

  • An analytical model of liquid sloshing is developed to consider the energy-loss effect through a partially submerged porous baffle in a horizontally oscillating rectangular tank. The nonlinear boundary condition at the porous baffle is derived to accurately capture both the added inertia effects and the energy-loss effects from an equivalent non-linear drag law. Using the eigenfunction expansion method, the horizontal hydrodynamic force (added mass, damping coefficient) on both the wall and baffle induced by the fluid motion is assessed for various combinations of porosity, submergence depth, and the tank's motion amplitude. It is found that a negative value for the added mass and a sharp peak in the damping curve occur near the resonant frequencies. In particular, the hydrodynamic force and free surface amplitude can be largely reduced by installing the proper porous baffle in a tank. The optimal porosity of a porous baffle is near P=0.1.

  • It is known that an oscillating airfoil can Produce a driving force through the generation of a reversed $K\'{a}rm\'{a}n$ vortex street, and this can be expected to be a new highly effective propulsion system. The wake formation behind the heaving airfoil was visualized and was measured using PIV systems We have been examined various conditions such as frequency number, amplitude in NACA 0010. As Strouhal number is greater than 0.08. wake profile with velocity deficit can be transformed into the wake with velocity excess After evaluating vortex center flow patterns in the wake investigated using tracking trajectories in temporal evaluation of the shedding vortices. • Aqua is an underwater biomimetic vehicle designed and built at McGill University that uses six paddles to produce control and propulsion forces. It has the particularity of having time-periodic thrust due to its oscillating paddles. Using an existing model of the vehicle, two types of controller were developed: a PD controller and a Floquet controller. The Floquet controller has the advantage of explicitly addressing the time-periodicity of the system. The performance of the controllers was assessed through simulation and experimentally in the Caribbean Sea. We find that the vehicle was able to follow the prescribed trajectories with relative accuracy using both controllers, though, the Floquet controller slightly outperforms the PD controller. Furthermore, a key advantage of the Floquet controller is that it requires no tuning while the PD controller had to be tuned by trial and error.

  • Long bridges, such as suspension bridges and diagonal bridges, are complex phenomena that show different behaviors depending on the shape and rigidity of the cross sections, such as wind vibrations and liquid vibrations from earthquakes in liquid storage containers. This is called the lower skirt on the lower side of the bridge, and the installation of lower skirt is effective for release and vortex vibrations caused by rapid winds, and that increases the stability of the wind resistance of the bridge. Optimal shape and installation of the lower skirt is also essential to make maximum wind speed effect of the lower skirt. Therefore, this study proposes a numerical analysis method to control the vibration of a bridge by calculating the optimal installation angle of an optimal lower skirt according to the optimal control theory and this study evaluates the impact on the optimal control system by minimizing the dominance equation with an evaluation function, which is an indicator for evaluating the optimal control theory state.

  • To determine the effect of draining for the drainage layer in CFGD(Concrete Faced Gravel Dam) body, centrifuge model tests were performed. Also, soil compaction works are essential to construction of dams in order to avoid unexpected settlement of superstructures. Taking advantage of oscillating accelerometer, this research was made to complement existing methods for assessment of soil stiffness. In order to examine the validity of compaction-degree suggested in the study, tests on vibration characteristics using accelerometers was also performed.
